I Finally Beat Homeworld!
Well I finally did it! After playing this game off and on for over 4 years, I finally beat the last 3 missions last night. I had been stuck on the 14th, for what seemed like forever. That's the mission where there's the giant sphere of ion-frigates, and you have to destroy the jump gates in the middle.
I spent untold hours using squads of salvage corvettes to steal about 80 or so of the enemy ion frigates and then retired about 40 of them and used the money to outfit my fleet for the final two missions.
Overall, this game was awesome when it first came out back in 1998 or so, and it continues to blow my mind how good it portrays 3D space combat. Maybe I'll try Cataclysm now. One thing is for sure, I'm EAGERLY awaiting Homeworld 2.
If you haven't tried this game yet, you can probably find it pretty cheaply. I highly highly recommend it if you like RTS or space combat.
Maybe I'll try one of the Star Wars or Star Trek mods and see what it's like playing the game with those types of ships...

I never got past the sphere myself. I surpassed the unit build limit for every class of ship. Then I salvaged literally half the sphere. I thought that would be enough but I finished that level with massive casualties, and couldn't pass the asteroid level with my minimal army. I didn't want to spend untold hours on the sphere again, so I just quit.
Great game, and great soundtrack too.

i never beat it either... actually, the only RTS i ever beat was starcraft (not including brood war). i have them lying around somewhere.
i do remember that homeworld was one of the best ones i'd seen in a long while... soundtrack was beautifully integrated. if they ever release a cheap homeworld/cataclysm combined game, i'll pick it up.

I was just looking at this game yesterday morning. I bought it for 4 dollars because the guy at the local EB told me it was great, but I never got around to playing it. It is still sitting right next to me, in the box.
Maybe I'll have to take a break from Dark Age of Camelot.

I just unistalled the game today... still stuck on Mission 14 after 15 hours of trying different technics. I tried the stealing thing but always got pounded by support when I tried. I tried so many different ways. I still have the save files, but doubt I will go back and try again.
That said... one of the greatest games ever!

The way I managed to steal all the ion frigates in mission 14 was to build a whole munch of scouts and set them on evade. Have the scouts fly into the sphere and then fly out. A couple of ion frigates should follow you back. Have your salvage frigates go after the ion ones and use the scout as decoys, using them to attack the ion frigates, but not destroying them, while the salvage frigates go in close to capture them.
I kept doing this technique over and over again until I had about 80 or so ion frigates captured, with very minimal loses to my own fleet.
