Why do people complain about the long ass cut scenes and codec sessions in MGS2? In the MGS, there were a ton of them as well, with all them in tact it took me like ten hours to beat the game, skipping them took three hours or less. The same could be said for MGS2, but I can understand people hating the characters and story in the game.

Say what you will about the story or cutscenes in MGS2, if you didn't enjoy the gameplay sections in that game then you obviously need not apply to MGS3. In my opinion it was nice to have a game without a cookie cutter plot that involved saving the girl or where the enemies or heroes were entirely obvious. MGS games have always had complex stories with characters that do have flaws and, dare I say it, "personality".
This game looks pretty sweet. The musical score still gives me goosebumps. :D |
Awesome! I know a lot of people on this forum give MGS2 the cold shoulder because of the cut scenes (and/or a certain character), but I also really enjoyed MGS2. Wonder why they are releasing this video right before E3 though? They could have come out in full force during the show, but I'm not complaining :).
Hearing the MGS theme once again in that video got me really pumped, one of the best soundtracks eva! :) |

Rambo: First Mullet
I don't know how you guys can tell how good the game is gonna be just from a trailer of the cinematics, but I guess I'm still optimistic. I know what the gameplay is like for the series, so as long as the story isn't as retarded as MGS2, I'll be happy. Call me skeptical, but I doubt this will look anywhere near as good as Splinter Cell. Apples and oranges for those two games. |
I don't mind the cutscenes in games if they forward a good story. IMO, MGS2 had one of the most poorly executed stories I've encountered.
I hope that MGS3 either seriously revamps its stealth gameplay or puts more emphasis on action. |
Exactly - I wasn't so much turned off by the amount of cut scenes - it's just that they didn't amount to much and the story was so convoluted and stupid that I couldn't stomach it. The whole series (MGS2 especially) is just a random string of movie cliches anyway, so it lacks substance (pun intended) to begin with. This third one - from the trailer alone - looks like it keeps the whole movie cliche thing in tact, but hopefully they flesh it out a bit more rather than try to make it idiotic. Gamers are as intelligent as a movie-going audience, so developers need to put as much effort into the story as they do into the gameplay these days.

The problem with the plot of MGS2 was that they rushed it for the whole "Year of the Snake" thing. The whole patriarcal vibe of the game was great but toards the end it seems they had all these different ideas about where to take the story and in the heat of the moment rather than stiking to one story and maybe two subplots (that could have easily been left unresolved until the next game) they seemingly chose to put everything in. That really hurt the game as it really lost its focus.
I really liked Raiden but hated Rose. I loved Solidus but he really needed more meat to his character since in the end he felt rather underdeveloped Spoiler:
The story about Otacon's sister felt a little tacked on and they really should have nixed his soliloqiue after she died. To be honest, I got more out of the Patriots angle from reading the script than playing the game. They should have only been hinted at and that hour long conversation should not have taken place so very late in the game (actually, it shouldn't have taken place at all). I did the like the game (I still play it straight through - codecs and all) but I have my issues with it as well. |
Snake eating snake....damn cannibal

I for one can't wait when MGS:TWIN SNAKE comes out on GC!!! I hope it's gonna be a remake of MGS with the new and improved gameplay + graphics! (Seriously, I want to capture the whole MGS Twin Snake game / story and play it like a movie for my non-video game playing friends! I think the story is THAT good!) |
Hey, I'm curious, what would you like to see in this game? I mean, what improvements/features would you all like to see made/return for MGS3 (aside from those already mentioned)?
I for one would like to see in-game codecs. By that I mean that, rather than have Snake crouch down and yammer on with whoever in front of a blank screen, I'd like to be able to listen to the conversation while I continue to play the game. You could use a brief cinema that shows a guard stalking Snake as he's having a conversation and show Snake take out the guard before he's even finished with his conversation. Then you'd have to pay attention to valuable story/objective information via codec AND keep an eye out for any guards in the area. It just bugged me that Snake would stop dead in his tracks and talk for so long yet no one ever took advantage of this opportunity to cap him. What do y'all think? |

Really, trigun? Chalk that up as another reason why I must play Splinter Cell ASAP.
|
Similar to Splinter Cell, and also the classic System Shock 2 (PC), which, if you haven't played, you need to. NEED TO. All gamers owe it to themselves to face off with SHODAN.
|
So that makes two games and me broke... :(
Back to my question? What would you guys add, change, totally revamp (within reason) and/or nix for this upcoming sequel? |

It's a pretty bold statement to say about a game it's the "greatest ever" from only a 1 minute and 15 second trailer. I can say that the trailer looks good graphically. But that's about it for now. |
Yeah - the gameplay in this series has at times been quite innovative - I'll agree. I was referring to the storylines being tired cliches. They use so many of them though that to some it might seem like something new.

I think Snake Eater is a nickname for US Army Special Forces.

Originally posted by ipkevin I think Snake Eater is a nickname for US Army Special Forces. You are correct. that is were the whole "sneak eater" comes from. Special forces located in the jungles. |
Sony just announced that this would be a PS2 exclusive.
|
"Kojima did, however, talk about a few new gameplay elements. Hunting for food will become a new concern for players. Being in the jungle, different creatures will be floating around. Snake can hunt them down and eat them. If he eats a certain animal several times, he will start to develop a taste for it, resulting in a higher power increase from that animal than others."
OK, this game just entered stupid territory. |
Not really, trigun. There was talk a while back that this game would make use of the PS2's internal clock so adding a survival aspect to the game is a good way to up the challenge and theoretically suggests an emphasis on actual gameplay this time around and taking into account how long Snake's missions take in real world time (the Big Shell Incident took place during 18+ hours and so did the business at Shadow Moses) it promises a much longer and much more challenging gaming experience if they truly exploit the survival aspect and limit the timeyou have to fulfill the mission parameters. This also makes better sense (and a whole lot less overly literal) of the scene in the trailer where Snake takes a big bite out of a Snake. It makesmore sense than Snake trudging across the river and then suddenly going "hey there's a ration floating around here!" Of course, you should still be able to get rations from soldiers. Maybe make the rations more potent and very rare?
