Deee-Lite Singer Sues Sega

According to Rolling Stone, Deee-lite's Lady Miss Kier (Kierin Kirby) has filed a lawsuit against Sega due to similarities between the Space Channel 5 character Ulala and the singer.

The lawsuit alleges that many of Ulala's characteristics (ranging from her makeup and knee-high boots to her miniskirts and "cute" backpacks) are similar to those of Lady Miss Kier, resulting in misappropriation of likeness, unfair competition, unjust enrichment, and more.

The lawsuit also states that audiences will most likely be confused, if they haven't been so already, as a result of the similarities between the two.

I guess she needs money since it's been 13 years since her last hit record.

I guess she is trying to get another 15 minutes.

she will lose since I think Sega can use the "who the hell are you defense?"

and close with "why base a character on a has been?"

I'll never buy a game with a character that looks like Miss Kier. Maybe Sega should counter sue her for loss of revenue.

WTF? Oh yeah.. I guess she's the only one allowed to wear mini-skirts and cute backbacks..

Celebrities are the lowest form of life on this planet.

As a Dee-Lite fan, I have to agree with you guys..

I don't think it's a continuation of the 15 minutes that she wants..she wants more $$$ for some weed, man..

You left out the part where Sega offered her $15,000 for her likeness, but she turned them down. They used it anyway.

didn't they make the character look cute?

wouldn't that prove it was not based on her since she is a bit good lucking challenged.

Isn't she a little late on this? The game came out a few years ago.

If she isn't on a music video singing "Groove is in the heart", I personally would not recognize her. I don't think most people would for that matter.
That is probably why sega gave here a big "screw you" by going ahead with the game and character.

since her persona/"character" was obviously of interest to Sega, does that make it right that they went ahead since most people wouldn't recognize her..?

I would think part of the lawsuit would have to do with the defamation of her public image. That would only matter if you were famous or well known, ie visually recognizable. Easy enough for Sega to tweak the character a bit and save the $15,000 they offered. So, yes, I do think recognition is atleast in part what the lawsuit is based on.

Why didn't she sue back in when the game first came out on the DC? I love the girl but come on Kierin.

Impossible!

If they based Mario after Ron Jeremy they would've had to incorporate some sort of "Third Leg Kick" combo or Tail Whip
