Not sure if it's really a series, but Super Dodge Ball for the NES was one of my favorite games for years.

IMO Tie Fighter was way too easy.

I agree. I was unimpressed with X-Wing, but I loooooved Tie Fighter.

I'm going to also reiterate my earlier nomination of Twisted Metal 2. The graphics look pretty rough these days, but that was as good as it gets as far as gameplay, IMO.
