Who's gonna get Return to Castle Wolfenstein XBOX?

How many of you guys are planning on getting Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War for Xbox? I'm kinda sitting on the fence on this one and was wondering what some of you guys were planning on getting in terms of XBL games.

I read the preview in OXM and they said something like RtCW is like a bit like Unreal championship with some GR elements. Maybe I'll just keep playing GR until Halo2 and ravenshield come out :)

I know it's funny, being a big Xbox fan and all.. but these kind of games really don't interest me much.

Shame I can't get into them though, they are fun.

xlpanda 03-05-03 02:27 PM

Hey Pixy,

I can understand. My friend really likes sports games like football, basketball, and hockey but I really can't get into them as much. I am tempted by Phastasy Online for xbox as well. It is coming out soon but I'm a little too cheap to pay that 8.95 "hunter license/monthly fee" after the initial free period. -ptth-

MasterofDVD 03-05-03 02:40 PM

I had never played RTCW before about 2 days ago. I downloaded the old PC demo on my new PC just to see how it could run games.

I really wanted the XBOX version before and now I'm sure I'm going to pick it up. I can't stand most sports game so for know FPS games are all I guess I'll be playing on Live.

DVDTalker002 03-05-03 02:40 PM

I really want it bad. Specially since I never played it on computer.

I've played it through on the PC, and it's a pretty excellent FPS. Some of the level designs are terrific and the stealth levels are extremely challenging. I also dig the whole Dubya-Dubya 2 setting and some of the abstracted Nazi tech. It's a lot of fun.

Having said that, it's not a particularly inventive game... it's sort of like the last generation FPSs like Quake 2 or Unreal with better graphics and a better setting.

I will not be buying it, but manily because I've already got it.

slop101 03-05-03 04:13 PM

When does it come out?

Gromit 03-05-03 05:22 PM

Is it still being released on 3/26?

I plan on getting it. Online play plus 2 player co-op sounds great.

Same here, can't wait.

Beat it on PC. IMO the single player story pretty much sucks -- just not very interesting, drab levels, etc. However, multiplayer is a lot of fun, and it'll definitely be one to pick up for LIVE. Who knows, maybe with the new levels and whatnot, I'll enjoy it more the second time through using the Xbox controller.

Roan 03-05-03 06:07 PM

It's on my list but I'll probably wait for some reviews before I buy it.

Same here. I haven't played any of the PC versions and have been waiting for this. It will hopefully live up to expectations.

edytwinky 03-05-03 10:43 PM

Not me

Centurion 03-05-03 11:12 PM

Definitely going to pick this one up. The co-operative + multiplayer gameplay will get the most use in my XBOX.

areacode212 03-07-03 07:43 PM

I have the PC version, and I have to agree with Tuan Jim. The single-player game is somewhat drab, and though it has some nice moments (the zombie levels made me jump), it's too short, and just feels uninspired. I haven't played it online, so I can't really comment on multiplayer, but if you're going to buy it just for the single-player, you're probably better off getting a decent classic PC FPS (there are some good ones that you can get for bargain prices).

I loved the single player but I'm one who has almost zero interest in multiplayer. I never really understood the fasination....

Trigger 03-08-03 11:17 PM

I loved it on the PC and played the multiplayer for hours and hours, but I think I've moved on - I'll certainly pick it up used for like 25 bucks though sometime.

dgc 03-26-03 08:07 PM

Who's played the OXM demo?

Jeremy517 03-26-03 08:19 PM

I hated the single player, so I'll avoid this. I guess I was just expecting more realism in the single player mode.

Just the opposite here. I really liked the single player but couldn't care less about the multiplayer. It's probably the same reason I was a big fan of MOHAA on the PC but stayed away from 1942.....

CuriousGeorge 03-27-03 03:15 AM

If you're into multiplayer like I am, I'd favor the PC release over the XBL. There are so many more levels and simple yet so effective mods available for download. If you thought the servers on RTCW multiplayer sucked.. upgrade your installed version of 1.1 to 1.3 or what i have, 1.4. There are SO MANY more servers and the level of competition is better. These servers are better with their better pings, better rules (on kicking team-killer players and so forth) and player load capabilities. Some servers support up to 64 players in a single level!! The add-on levels mae it a whole new ballgame with Operation MarketGarden and Tram, as well as a bunch of others. Cheating (if it even exists in this game) is prevented through the use of Punkbuster software in the upgrades. There are game type mods such as goldrush, and others i might not be aware of. In 1.4 and 1.3, after each round there are game stats during the warm up screen such as most kills, most deaths, most revives, most efficient, etc. Oh yea.. the game can also integrate medics with POISON needle capability and even throwing knives! Fun Fun fun!

kittycarnage.com is one of them, but there are so many more mod sites that I've never gotten around to. I de-stress on RTCW almost everyday after work.

i'm skipping the xbox version.

Sloth911 03-27-03 05:17 PM

i played the demo today. i know that demos are often limited. i just hope that the controller is much more configurable then the demo version.

the graphics are nice, but definitely not "realisitic" like GR or SC

the game (not demo) is Live compaitable correct? does anyone know the release date? was it this past tuesday? or nect week.

i will get the game if it is LIVE and the controls are more configurable.

Barney1234 03-27-03 06:26 PM

Demo is very cool, playing it now.
VERY SMOOTH, Xbox Rocks!

kegman 03-28-03 10:41 AM

I thought the demo was to dark it is hard to see the guys. I am usually dead before I can find where they are.

goatweed 03-28-03 01:30 PM

I've had this game on my PC for over a year now, and while I beat the single-player in a few days, it's the multi-player aspect of the game that really hooked me on it - so much that I still play on a daily basis.

And as mentioned before, there literally are loads and loads of uber-cool mods to play on, not to mention various server sizes. I still think it's hella fun.

As for getting it on the-Box, I think I'll pass - I don't think I'd play all that well on it, especially since I'm so used to the KB/mouse combos on my PC, not to mention all the separate key bindings for sounds and/or phrases.

On another note, I can't wait until the add-on comes out for this game - it's long overdue, and just the thought of being able to bomb bridges and set up land mines makes me feel all warm & fuzzy inside :)

jrutz 04-03-03 08:38 PM

Okay now I'm officially stoked:

It is LIVE

ebgames.com shows the release date as 05/06/03

Played the demo and liked it even less than the single player PC version. I may pick it up on sale just for multiplayer, but I virtually never buy a game for multiplayer alone. I like a good SP experience. My problem with Wolfenstein (PC and Xbox) is a lot like my dislike of UT2k3. It just doesn't feel like you're actually hitting them. You fire and fire without "seeing" any real effect -- frustrating and boring IMO. That's the main thing, but other issues of control and tightness seem to arise from that for me.

What do you mean by not seeing any real effect? Is that because of the automatic targeting?

Is this game on SPEED like Unreal:Tournament????
I need to get the demo i suppose...

I personally did not like Unreal for XBOX, i guess i'm more a Halo FPS shooter (or even Ghost Recon)

Barney1234 04-04-03 10:14 AM

Nah, not on speed like UC.
Heh, I turn the speed UP in UC to 125, cause I think it's too slow.

Halo is DREADFULLY slow.
I wind up hurting my hand cause I'm pushing too hard on the controller to make him go faster...

BTW, Halo2 will be faster!

finbogg 04-04-03 03:47 PM

I played through the PC version and thought it was just okay. I wasn't even giving this a second thought until I heard they're coming out with full multiplayer mode via XBOX LIVE. Plus it's more than just a port with what seem to be pretty large changes in gameplay etc.

Now I'm considering it pretty heavily.

Tuan Jim 04-04-03 05:30 PM

No, it's not targetting or anything. It's just like you're shooting wooden dummies. It doesn't feel like there's anything there. The PC version had a similar problem but multiplayer was a little better, this one seems to have it in spades. I know it sounds a little odd, but it just seems so weird. Even in Halflife the enemies felt/seemed organic, but this game is just so lifeless.

By GR do you mean Ghost Recon? Those graphics are dated even on the PC.....

retihsuhnt 05-28-03 11:58 AM

Just for those that are on the fence or need a little extra push, in this months EGM on page 115 you can find a $5 off coupon for Return to Castle Wolfenstein that can be redeemed at BB for either the PS2 or XBox releases.

MasterofDVD 05-28-03 01:24 PM

I'm so glad I caved in and bought this. Even if I've only hopped on to play a quick LIVE game it's stil a great game.

Not a real story driven FPS shooter but it doesn't have to be. I've spent a ton of time on the Single Player and Co-Op mode and had a blast.

I'm trying to get good before I really jump online with it.

Ralph Wiggum 05-28-03 03:02 PM

Jump online!

I enjoyed the single player game, but it is garbage compared to the fun to be had on Live. :D
