What system do you use in naming cities/planets in strategy games?

Whenever I play games like civilization and Master of Orion I always like to rename every city or planet that I settled instead of using the defaults. I played most of these games while I was a in high school so I used various names of colleges. First city would be Harvard, next Yale, all the way down to Hofstra. What system do you use?

I sometime name them myself, but my originality drops off after 20 or so systems (in MOO). So then they end up being names Ass, Ass2, Ass3, Ass4, MyAss, MyAss1

you get the picture. It gets sort of confusing too. "Now was it Ass or MyAss that had the best ship building ability, no wait Ass has the high mineral conten..."

I name them after you guys...the regulars of Video Game Talk.

Now, if you don't mind, Josh Hinkle is under siege and the hamlet of Trigger is facing starvation. Gotta dash!

I use the names of famous archaeological sites in some geographic area, usually Mesopotamia.

i.e. Ur, Nippur, Mashkan-Shapir, Abu Salabikh, etc.

I don't play games like this too often, but when I do I just name cities and whatnot something vulgar like ******* or *********.

I figured you'd have your assistant just do some serious research and give you a list of deep, meaningful names...

@ this thread.

I usually name my simcity cities names to help me keep them in order from the time in which they were created.

For example: Firstcity, Newcity, Citytwo, newtown, Dostown, etc...

After I gave away my homeworld in some multiplayer game, I learned to change the base names. Don't do it geographically either, as that can be a giveaway as to the size of your empire, or the fact that there is an ocean right beyond atlanta and savannah.
