will they stop making the original big xbox is my question.
i dont care for the small size, just thinking about getting an xbox and id rather have the big one cause it looks cool

Josh H 02-18-03 11:58 AM

I would imagine that they would no longer make the bigger one.

Learn from your mistakes.
I don't see how they are going to spend a lot of money on a redesign. If they use a laptop hard drive then it's just a question of interface which isn't a big deal. Everything else will stay the same. Since most of it is off the shelf components there isn't much design work to do.

The biggest problem of a redesign will likely be cooling. People have said that it overheats as it is now, so it would take a bit more engineering to make a smaller xbox run at a proper temperature...

If you have the thing properly spaced with other components, and not on the carpet and not near a heat source. Overheating should not be a problem.

I've never seen it anyway...

Just to add a late voice of experience to the hard drive size issue ... on every Xbox I've cracked open that had a larger hdd, it was still partitioned to 8gb and no more. Sometimes MS can't get enough 8gb drives and subs them for 10, 15 or even 20. Maybe even higher, but I've never seen it.

The one bonus to getting an xbox with a larger drive is that you can manually format the f\ drive to take up the remaining space. That could mean an extra 12 gb of storage for Linux apps, emulators etc.

Of course, I've never stuck with even a stock 20gb drive. 120 gb 7200rpm w/ 8mb cache is the way to go. :)

Can't see them increasing the size of the e\ partition (the one that holds game saves and music) as so few people fill that drive with music. What they should do (and should have done from the start) is give the option to do partial installs to the hdd for games with long load times. You'd be amazed by how fast Quantum Redshift loads when it's running off the hdd instead of the disc. Can't do full installs as people would just go to blockbuster and load games onto their hdd, but you could certainly do more aggressive file-caching through partial installs.

If they are switching to a smaller design, you'd think that they'd opt for a more compact board design ... it's pretty spaced out at present. Swap the standard hdd for a tiny laptop one, and they could conceivably cut the box in half. Design a more compact dvd drive instead of using a slightly modified off-the-shelf pc dvd drive ... there's tons of things they could do to make it smaller without having to worry too much about heat.

Personally, I like the big boy. It makes it a lot easier to mod with all of that extra room. As for the HD, most people end up replacing it anyway. I threw an 80 GB in mine (FatX can only handle up to 137 GB).

Having a drive that size is really nice, especially if you want a multi boot environment, and for other things....;-)

You mean..... Small XBOX.....easy to get Overheat compare to Big Xbox ??

The weight and the overheating have to have something to do with the AC power being inside the box. Just take it outside like the GC. It hides on the floor behind the TV anyway. I know some people hate this, but I have never had a problem.
