Modding does not = Piracy. My XBox is modded and I pay for everygame I have and always will.

Now if that 2nd drive was a DVD-R drive, and they were able to get some type of burning software on there, it would rock. You could have all of your downloaded media on the 4 HD's and burn CD-R's, and DVD-R's when you'd like. Of course this can already be done on a computer...

Then care to explain what you would need the other hard drives for?

Just a couple of things I can think of off the top of my head:

Playing games backed up to the hard drives.
Playing your mp3 collection.
Playing movies ripprd to the hard drives.
Playing emulated games.

Anything else?

All of which are piracy.. (unless of course you own the original blah blah blah which is never the case)

I think this xBox add-on is a complete farce.
This is a very limited view. Although, we wont settle this argument on this thread, here is my input:

I have many x-box games that I have bought. They are on very crappy optical discs. Just like CD's get scratched, so do optical game discs.

Being able to copy to a HD will allow people (does) to protect their original games.

This could EASILY be solved by using an optical (but protected) media, like the format of a mini-disc, but the consumers are not offered this type of product.

EVERY time you bought a game on 5.25 or 3.5 disc, the FIRST thing you were TOLD to do (by the manufacturer) was to BACK IT UP! To many it is NOT a issue related to piracy, rather an issue of prolonging the life of my games.

If gaming companies EMBRACE new technology, instead of RESISTing it, they will often make more money in the long term.

If any record label would have EMBRACED mp3 technology when it first hit the scene, they would be ROLLING in all the CASH generated from licensing and royalties (just like royalties are paid for the DD 5.1, CD, and other technologies), instead they choose (foolishly) to use there money to fight it, and look what that caused? Napster, Morepheus, etc.

It is ALL about taking the consumer for every penny possible. Piracy will ALWAYS exist. The fact of the matter is that very, very few people have time, know how, money, or resources to become an effective pirater.

The music industry is the only one hat has been really semi-screwed by piracy. Yet, they still manage to bring in billions of dollars and turn enormous profits.

I have over 1000 songs on my ipod (you know, an MP3 player) and I own all the cds I ripped them from.

I'd love to have a spare HD on my Xbox to move that collection to.

Then you are the very rare exception.

I won't aruge that you should be able to make backups or your stuff. I will argue that I son't think it's too practical. I have never had a CD/DVD/Game not work from being on a "crappy optical disc". Take care of your toys, that should be simple enough. I have however, had 3 harddrives completely die on me. In my eyes the optical media is much more trustworth than magnetic. I will also argue that even if you are making legal backups, I'm willing to bet you probably have some that aren't legal. Emulation? How many people other than my former roommate acutally owns over 300 Nintendo cartridges? Hey, and if your 100% honest and legal about this kind of thing more power to you. You're in an extreme minority. That's the problem, that something like this will do way more damage than it will good. To your one legal backup of Halo you made, in case your kid wipes his ass with the "crappy optical disc".. hundreds will just download it, causing people that PAY for thier games having to pay more down the line. I'm just trying to look at this realisticly. I would LOVE more than anything to be able to stick all the SNES games I own on a disc and be able to play them all on my Xbox with added features like instant saving etc.. hell.. we've got a NES emulator for DC that we play more than the DC games we own.

I actually wanted to say that, but I held back because in this case I think Static Cling knew exactly what the word meant and used it appropriately.

Let's be realistic. Very few people actually back up their console games. If I were to back up every game I owned the time would not outweigh the cost of simply replacing every game that went bad. The reality is that "backup" is code for "pirated copy." We all know this. Let's be adults and call it what it really is.
