Component switch box?

Look! I'm a cowboy! howdy, howdy, howdy!!

anywho,

fo those with HDTV, plasma, what have you that have component input, is there such a thing as a switch box? My dvd player is hooked up to the component now but I know the xbox supports it, how do I split the signal, or do I have to switch cables everytime?

thanks

Hi Squidget,
I have the same need. I have found this one by JVC:
JX-S111 Video Accessory. Cheapest I have found so far is $88.99.
You can find it here:looky
Hope this helps.

I'm using a passive composite switchbox from Radio Shack to swap component signals from my DVD player and my XBox. It's worked very well for me, and the price is certainly right. However, my set (a VVega KV-36FS12) doesn't support HD resolutions, so I'm only passing a 480i signal. I haven't noticed any degradation using the switchbox with my current setup, but if you're dipping your toes into the HD world, the differences might be more noticeable.

If you'd like to read comments on various switchboxes, including the composite 'cheat' I'm using, there are a few threads on the HTF about it:

Does the JX-S111 have component output? I can't find any information on the exact inputs and outputs on this unit.

Did a little more research, and I have found very detailed info here:video switch Hope the link works. I was having doubts about component out until I found this info. JVC didn't even have this info on their own site.

I completely forgot to check Crutchfield. I've ordered from them numerous times.

With a GC, Xbox and a DVD player hooked up to my 16:9 TV, this looks like the perfect thing. Thanks for the research, Paul!

I'm using the same thing to switch between PS2, GCN and XBox on my HD set. There's no noticable drop in quality when using the switch for 480p material on my set. The mechanical switches will supposedly have problems switching anything above 480p (I've never tried to pass a 720p or 1080i signal through it) but I've heard the same thing about the JVC component switch.

I was told that you can actually use a standard switch box. Use the Red, White and Yellow as if they were Red, Blue and Green. I don't see why that wouldn't work. I haven't tried it though(I have enough inputs).

I've used a normal composite video/audio switch (a Recoton model I believe) as a component video switch in the past without any problems. Video quality through the switch looked the same as direct for GameCube, PS2, and Xbox on my HDTV to me.

I doing this right now and it works great. Obviously you can't get your colors confused. Just to see, I've also passed 1080i through it and didn't notice any degrade in PQ. I switch my DVD Player, XBOX and PS2.

Does anyone know if this supports progressive scan sources well?

I also saw on the web the s100 model that is half the price.

Another vote for a composite switch box. I use the recton model, but any type will work just make sure that the component wires go to the analogous connectors. I use it to switch my xbox, progressive dvd and HD cable to my Samsung. I cannot notice any degradation in the HD cable signal.

yeah the composite trick will only work for interlaced display
if you got a HDTV that support 480p/720p it might not work as well, the JVC model is decent for the price, but remember that
it's a passive switch, meaning the signal is not boosted and it only supports 30Hz, which is barely enough to pull off 480p
so for future compatibility I'd throw in some more cash and
go with

480p only needs something like 13 or 14mhz, a composite switch has no problems at all passing a progressive signal. Also, if the JVC switch supports up to 30MHz it should be ok for 1080i, from what I've read you only really need (I think) 22MHz for 1080i.

well, 480p is confirmed to work on my GameStop brand composite switcher. No noticible drop in video quality.
