I'm not a big fan of Nintendo these days....but Metroid should be on that list. This game is fantastic. Retro did an amazing job creating this game....hmmm does Retro smell like Rares replacement?

MechAssault should be higher on the list.

A list of "Best Game of 2002" without Metroid Prime or GTA Vice City is just whack.

I agree thats a terrible list, i haven't even heard of half the games on it. That whole site seems skewed toward PC gamers especially when you look at the news and reviews, which would explain why they only cover PC, Xbox, and PS2, there's no love for the GC at all . They're reportingrumors as "news" from the Inquirer (which of course is the best place to look for true and factual information) saying the GC costs $20 to make, anyone with a half a brain can see how thats false. Ahh well its their site, they can say whatever they want .

I think Decker said it best, where the hell is Metroid Prime and GTA Vice City?

Unfortunatley i dont' know of any other best of 2002 lists, though gamespot usually has one around this time of year (or january).

Edit: I just realized thats a UK site, i don't know if metroid prime and Vice City have been released there.

Man, I really have to get over to my friend's place to play Metroid Prime the way everyone always raves about it. Is it that good or is it that the GC had a little drought of games followed by a blockbuster? Seems to be very well reviewed and will give GTA:Vice City a run for it's money for Game of the Year.

OK, here's Entertainment Weekly's list.

They still give Metroid Prime no love (I think they gave it a B) and WTH is Spiderman doing there; but it's certainly more on track than the original list (especially at #1 )

I really hate it when these mags with a large reader base reviews games when they really should not be. more examples would include all the men's magazines ie maxim, fhm etc. Top ten games with the biggest boobs.

I have that Metroid Prime review and they did give a B solely on the basis that the game had no "plot". It sounded like they were used to games with a lot of cut scenes and voice overs. Well, don't listen to me, here's the exact verbiage:

Funny thing: after a few hours with Metroid Prime, you begin to wonder where you should start pumping quarters into your GameCube. That's because this futuristic action-shooter plays just like a classic 1990s arcade game: It's filled with over-the-top battle sequences, spectacular visual effects -- and a pretty weak plot.

As in previous versions of Metroid, you suit up as Samus, a female bounty hunter who faces off against space pirates on an unexplored alien planet. Only this time, the familiar side-scrolling perspective has been replaced with a much more immersive first-person 3-D viewpoint, just as in Quake. The new point of view works surprisingly well, especially since you'll be hard-pressed to find another game with smoother controls or environments that eclipse the beauty of areas like this game's network of ice caves.

This improvement, among others, makes for a snazzy and polished game presentation. Less refined, however, is the story, which isn't quite ready for, uh, Prime time. In fact, the game is devoid of any spoken dialogue and has no supporting characters. What passes for the narrative is a series of text blurbs that have all the drama of a fortune-cookie message. Yet the lack of plot doesn't totally knock the wind out of Metroid's sails. At its core, the game delivers what matters most: well-designed gameplay with interesting puzzles. In the end, Metroid Prime's plot won't rouse your emotions, but its great action sequences will hook you. Just don't look for a novelization anytime soon.

What the hell? that is why I don't like non-gaming mags doing reviews. What did they want, war and peace? It's a game. that's even worse than knocking it for not having multiplayer.
