What is the key to beating Halo while playing by yourself on Legendary difficulty?

I've got 2 levels to go, but it's a ridiculous process. 99% trial and error, and blind luck. VERY time consuming...

here are a few tips:

1. master the Pistol. Use the zoom to take out as many covenant as possible, then when it's down to just you and the elites to advance, try the following strategies.

2. Use the needler whenever posisble on Elites, their shields are too strong for anything else but a huge volume of needles, and didging needles is one skill they don't get a lot better at as difficulty levels improve.

3. Use a charged Plasma pistol to deplete their shields, so then charge in and switch guns while charging, and finish them off with some plasma rifle/attach rifle from close range with a melee to boot. Don't try this vs. multiple elites

4. Use the charged plasma pistol to dissolve Jackals' shields. They're easy without the shields.

By the way, lotsa people prefer the plasma rifle over pistol, but they're nuts. Plasma rifle is useless on legendary, except for a better melee than the Plasma pistol (which is slow as hell mind you compared to assault rifle), it has no advantages. Pistol has:

a. higher firing rate, so more shots off in same amount of time, even though its' not fully automatic

b. Takes longer to overheat

c. Charge feature

d. abundance compared to plasma rifle. You can be sending off charged bursts left and right, and there's always a fresh plasma pistol with 80+ energy around the corner.

anyways, moving on:

5. Here's the big one: You cannot complete checkpoints with less than good health. If you're getting "checkpoint completed" messages with 2 bars of red health left, might as well start the level over- it's not going to happen for you unless a health pack is right around the corner.

Remember on level 3, "Truth and Reconciliation," after you take out the hunters and beam up to the ship with your support squad, and the invisible Elites start coming at you... This is possibly the toughest room in the game on Legendary, and if you don't have near full health going in, you're toast. even with the health pack and invisible in there's it's a good hour of your life to get through that room, just doing it over and over and over...

6. On some later levels, there are sniper rifles you can get, but once you're out of ammo on it, it's sometimes worth lugging it around, because they'll reward you with sniper ammo later in the level, but only give you one crack at the rifle early on. So, I carry the rifle with me, drop it, clear a room, and then bring it along to the enxt room...until I find ammo. Trust me, a pain to lug it around like that, and to do all the switching, but it pays off when you drop 2 Hunters with 2 shots in their orange flesh spots on their back.
