I have absolutely no idea what this means, but this is a Japanese RPG juggernaut.
What this means for Sony is particularly interesting. They've effectively gone from being a major player with Square to a smaller player in Enix, I think.
I think this is a "console war" maneuver, but I have no idea which company is behind it. Microsoft could be implementing a strategy to penetrate Japan, or Nintendo could be striking back. I don't think it's Sony, because they seem to be kind of screwed over.
On a related note, I saw a story a couple of months ago that Square, Enix and Nintendo were collaborating on a project, or that developers from Square and Enix had been hired away by Nintendo for some project, but I haven't heard anything since, and I can't find the original link. I'm eager to see what happens here.

I've never heard of Enix, and I guess that's not surprising since it was an NES game. It would probably be best I stay out of the postulations over this merger about what it all means in the great console conspiracy/war.

Never heard of Enix!?, dear god. Anyhow lets not jump to multiple conspiracys yet.Sadly japanese economy is really that bad that something this wild after all these years of competition finally happens.
Now if only someone grow a brain and pick up Falcom, makers of Y's for starters that been stuck in japanese pc development because they dont have funds or size.

This means that Xbox will never sell in Japan. Dragon Warrior is the ultimate system seller there and many thought that Microsoft's big potential coup (last chance) would be to land Dragon Quest 8 as an exclusive. I've heard [possible internet gibberish] that the Japanese government doesn't let them release DQ games on weekdays because so many people just drop everything to play [/possible internet gibberish].
I'd guess that there will be some big collaborative game announced in the near future. Another Chrono game perhaps?

Ah yes.. I can already sense Dragon Quest 8 with over 10 billion hours of CG movies and badly fanfiction-like plot lines.
Oh well.. 1-6 still live as the best RPGs ever.

So that makes me wonder how old the average DVDtalker is if they have never heard of Enix or Dragon Warrior.

now call them : Square Enix
Wow...Enix is in charge! :O
Kinda like the Irresistable force meeting the immovable object, they way they put it...
From Magic Box International Game news:
Square and Enix announced they will be merging into a new company called Square Enix in Japan on April 1, 2003. Both Square and Enix are the top RPG makers in Japan, with the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series on hand, Square Enix would become the biggest RPG developer. The purpose of the amalgamation is to use the centripetal force to the creator and the content property to maximize and reinforce the earnings base. In the amalgamation ratio, Square is 0.81 and Enix is 1.0, therefore Square will become the dissolution company while Enix will take charge of Square Enix. The new chairman for Square Enix is Keiji Honda, the president and representative director of Enix; and Square's Wada Youichi will become the vice president of the company.Magic Box Link
