Deus Ex, Half-Life, No One Lives Forever 1 and 2, Unreal, Clive Barker's Undying, System Shock 2, Aliens vs. Predator 1 & 2, Medal of Honor, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Soldier of Fortune 1 & 2, all the Jedi Knight/Dark Forces games, and plenty of other games all have elements of Adventure, RPG or whatever in them and most of them are very story driven. Games like Serious Sam, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 Arena and so-on aren't so much story-driven, but are mainly for running and killing... that's why multiplayer is important. Most FPS games are listed under Action, but that doesn't make them any less of a FPS. Max Payne by the way isn't in first person perspective.

Wow. This is a lot of conversation about nothing.
The important thing (to me at least) is that the game is METROID. Call it an FPS, call it an adventure game, call it Extreme Alien Pitfall, it's still Metroid and I'll still buy it.

MP is not a typical FPS. If people want to be silly and have to cram everything into a specific, narrowly-defined genre, then fine, call it and FPS. But it is nothing like Halo and other games that are typically known as an FPS. Just like Super Metroid was not a typical side-scrolling shooter like Contra. At any rate, adventure games like this are generally single player only, plus every Metroid game ever released has only been single player, so I see no reason to bitch about lack of multiplayer in this game.
Plus, as I said earlier, I think a game should be judged only on the gameplay modes it has, not the ones it lacks. If a game lacks multiplayer, it shouldn't affect the score, unless it knocks the replay value. With something like Halo lacking bots, one is knocking the game for lacking something in one of it's modes, rather than lacking a mode all together.

Gamespy was present at the recent videoconference chat for Metroid Prime . The media was able to speak with Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Retro Studios' Steve Barcia (MP executive producer) on all things MP. Here is what was said about first person shooters:
Here is the Gamespy reporter's take on the FPA/S aspect of Metroid Prime:
source: Gamespy
Barcia: We weren't trying to fit in that genre. We had to break down the stereotypes of what a first-person game is and make a fun Metroid game. First-person jumping was the biggest challenge. There aren't a lot of first-person games where jumping is fun at all.
Miyamoto: It's very natural for an exploration game to be in the first person. Many 3D games are difficult -- difficult to play, difficult to control. Retro has done a great job at making the game accessible.
Barcia: I think it's good that people have an expectation and are surprised. Originality and presentation are important.

Throughout the course of its development, early versions of the game were submitted in both the first and third person. When I first saw the game, I couldn't envision how a first-person perspective game could possibly feel like Metroid. After playing, I totally see it… but it would be hard to convince the uninitiated.
One of the biggest hurdles Metroid Prime faces is the perception that it's a first-person shooter. For a gamer not familiar with the series, it's easy to make that mistake. Part of the problem is that there really isn't any other game that Prime compares to. There are loads of first-person shooters and some first-person adventures, but there aren't any first-person exploration games with an emphasis on platform and puzzle gameplay. Miyamoto said that his team had to stop thinking of Metroid as a jumping game and start thinking of it as an exploration game. In that context, a first-person view makes perfect sense. After all, there's a sense of detachment that comes with third-person games.
The end result pulls off quite an impressive task: bringing Metroid to 3D in a first-person perspective. Again, I didn't really think it could be done, but after playing it I've learned otherwise.

I guess all this time everybody was wrong when they thought of Tomb Raider of an adventure game. It was a shooter all along!
And again, does this mean Super Metroid was a shooter and not an adventure game like everybody saw it as?

Metroid - whether you like it or not - is a First Person Shooter. If you just stand there, you'll get attacked and your character will die in real time. If the game didn't have a frenetic pace, it wouldn't be fun for you guys... so (all of you) just be happy that it's a FPS style of game rather than an Adventure style of gameplay and stop getting all upset like someone's trying to insult you. I'm not denying that there's elements of Adventure and whatever, but you guys make it out like it's SOOOO different, and it's really not. Most of the FPS games I play are the same way (if not more so in some cases). It just sounds really snobby like you're trying to say you're superior because you like a sophisticated game like Metroid Prime and the rest of us like mindless retard games for stupid people like Serious Sam. Give me a break.

Trigger, those are PC adventure games.
On consoles, Adventure games refers to things like Zelda, Secret of Mana, Metroid etc.
Totally different meanings on the two platforms.
MP is an First Person Adventure game that just happens to have some shooter elements in it. It's just a 3D version of the old metroid games, they were side scrolling adventure games, not side scrolling shooters like contra. MP is a first person adventure game, not an FPS like Halo.
In an FPS the main emphasis and skill required is shooting. That's not the case in MP. The main emphasis is exploration and shooting doesn't require much skill since you just push L to lock onto the enemy.
I don't think simply shooting and being in first person is all that makes a game a first person shooter. It's silly to pigeonhole games into broad genre's like that. If I didn't know better, and thought it was just a run of the mill FPS like Halo, Quake, etc. I would have no interest in it.
Thankfully Nintendo has taken the effort to make sure people know it's a First Person Adventure so those of us that don't like FPS games in general won't pass it up without giving it a chance.
If you want to agree with this definition, that's fine. Everyone can define things however they want. At least Nintendo and the gaming media mostly has it right.

I think you just have too broad a view of what an FPS is. FPS is a very specific genre. It does just mean "run, shoot, run, shoot." There are a lot of games that are labelled as FPSes that aren't actually FPSes. This is just the first time the developers have emphasized that the game is not a FPS. So I figure this is a good opportunity to make people stop using FPS for every game that has a first-person perspective.
I'm not upset if you call it a FPS, you're just wrong in calling it that because that's not what it is. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with playing FPSes, I enjoy them myself. But Metroid Prime is not a FPS. I'm not trying to insult anyone, I'm just saying Metroid Prime is not a FPS.
Ok.

Some people are only trying to point out that MP does not play like a typical FPS. And in that quote from Steve Barcia (MP Executive Producer), he says the same thing, that MP is not a FPS.

I see my attempt at inspirational invocation of the Metroid name did nothing to curb this inane debate.
Well, if the game was estimated at 8 hours of gameplay, then the lack of replayability via a multiplayer set-up would be a hindrance. But because the game is long, and it APPEARS that the game will live up to the hype, I can certainly forgive it. It's Metroid afterall.
Since there have been so many comparisons, I'll compare my Halo experience. I've had the game for about a year and just last week found someone to try out the multiplayer with. I already loved the game for the single-player, and I admit the game is better for it. This does not mean that MP will suffer for the lack of multiplayer.
Again, all of this is true regardless of which genre the game is put in. I'm still unclear as to why it matters all that much.

They shouldn't be compared because they are just too different.

Now everyone stop talking about it and go preorder this game now (or wait to rent in my case lol).
Actually I might not rent, if I get through Vice City I'll sell it and probably buy this. I'm sure I could get a free rental from Blockbuster though.

It might be a long game to beat in a rental period, unless you have a few whole days to devote to it. You could probably buy it and sell it for at least $35, or even trade it for that. I got $35 at EB for trading in Eternal Darkess a month or so after it came out.

Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Myst III Exile
Pirates The Legend of Black Kat
Shenmue II
Shrek
Silent Hill 2: Restless
ToeJam and Earl 3: Mission to Earth
As for the "Halo killer" business, the only Halo killer coming out is Halo 2.

Would you call Morrowind a First Person Slasher? No its a Adventure/RPG game in First Person thats it.
If MP was in 3rd person no one would be talking about how they want multi-player in this game,I dont know about you even if MP had multi-player most would not play it since to complete the game 100% takes 50+ hours.

One last attempt to clarify this.
Lets breakdown the term "first person shooter."
The first two words refer to the perspective. So any game shown through the eyes of the character would be classified as "first person _________."
Now for the last part. This is the specification. It states what type of game it is. It should be a reflection of the MAIN FOCUS of the game.
In a game like Halo, shooting is the main focus, exploring, adventure, etc are secondary gameplay elements. So Halo is a First Person Shooter.
In Metroid Prime, like the previous games in the series, the emphasis is in on exploring and adventure, shooting is a secondary element (hence the lock on L trigger to simplify it), there fore Metroid Prime is a First Person Adventure.
And adventure is used in the traditonal console sense (i.e. zelda/metroid type games, not the PC gaming sense (i.e. Escape from Monkey Island).
So basically, I think games need to be classified according to the main focus, and the main focus of metroid isn't shooting.
