My friend subscribes to OXM magazine, that gives out the demo for the XBOX.
Amongst the titles, lay a playable demo, of quite possibly the most gorgeous game I've ever played, and one of the most fun.
Panzer Dragoon Orta.
THe rain effects were amazing. The cut scenes were done "in game" (widescreen mode) and the boss battle was intense.
The level design is amazing, the background detail is amazing.
This game is amazing.

I played the demo over at Toys R Us...I thought it was pretty fun. I not too sure about it 'kicking arse', but it was fun.
I think I'd probably get bored with it after a while though if all i'm doing is shooting stuff in front of me, then turning around and shooting stuff behind me and then 'rinse and repeat'.
There's got to be more gameplay than that to get me going.
Graphics were real nice though I must say.

The game is basically this:
you're a little person on the back of a dragon and you have a gun. You can shoot that gun at enemies in front of you, to the sides of you, or behind you.
To change directions you just hit a trigger.
The view is third person.
You can lock on to multiple enemies and fire.

Check out the comments by a poster named "Abadd" in this thread:

If true, then the game is going to be a lot better than the demo (and, I liked the demo!).

Does Orta mean anything in German?
I know Panzer Dragoon Zwei.. Zwei means 2.. Orta doesn't mean 3..? I thought it was Drei..
Tho.. technically, this could be Panzerr Dragoon 4.

I hope it keeps the somewhat-on-rails shooter aspect of the first two games. It was simple but damn fun and the overall experience of those games were like nothing else I've ever played.
Besides, simple gameplay does not equal bad gameplay. And gameplay doesn't begin and end at simply the number of motions you have to perform. If you think about it, many games at their heart are the same few repetitive motions. Walk around, kill monsters. Rotate falling blocks. Sneak around guards. Shoot everything that moves, etc. It's how they are presented that makes all the difference.

I actually prefer slightly simplistic gameplay. I mean I don't like button mashers, but I've alwasy loved games like Panzer Dragoon, Star Fox, Contra, etc. that were really fairly straightforward "get from point A to point B without running out of lives" gameplay.

Ah. Contra.. I wonder if I could still beat the first game without dying..

As for Orta, the only thing I can say is that is the name of the girl. I don't think it has any German meaning at all. I think they are just saying it is Orta's saga in the Panzer Dragoon universe. This is only a guess though...it may have a meaning.

Played it today - reminds me alot of REZ for PS2 - I think I like REZ better... It's gorgeous though... I'll probably pick it up used at some point, but I don't think I'm a huge fan of this style of gameplay - much to the disappointment of my roommate.

After playing the demo, I really cannot wait for this to ship. Absolutely gorgeious, and gameplay was surprisingly addictive. I'm just hoping you don't have to start the level from the beginning if you die. Haven't played any other PD games so I don't know how they handle. The last rail shooter I played was Strikers 1945.
