me too, The 80's music is great but sometimes you jsut want something mellow and instrumental.

Showed up at Best Buy at 10:15 this morning. They told me that they had not yet received it, but that the another store 20 minutes away had gotten in a few copies. So there I am debating on making the trip and them possibly being out of stock, when one of the sales reps comes out with a fresh shipment of GTA 3: Vice City!

I immediately snagged a copy of it, a PS2, and a memory card. :)

Just finished playing about an hours worth. This game is so much fun, even if you played GTA3 to death. There are quite a few new inclusions that really add a nice touch to the game. If you are on the fence about this title, you really should give it a try!

Well, anybody? How do the combat controls and camera compare to GTA3?

So far, I haven't really noticed a difference in the combat controls or camera, though all I've done as far as combat is shoot cops and peds. But really, don't let this one detail keep you from buying this game. There is just so much good that outweighs the small amount of bad (if you can even call it "bad").

There's going to be some disappointed kids on Christmas morning!

I was in TRU and stopped 2 mothers from buying the original when the kids toy list said Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The TRU by me got in 216 copies and still had about 100 at lunch.

The terrible combat controls and camera in GTA3 was one of things that turned me off from the game. It was practically half the game, and there's absolutely nothing worse than bad controls. Supposedly the targetting system is improved, and the rest of the game has a lot more variety, so maybe I'll like it more.

anyone figure out how to pop a wheelie on the motorcycles yet?

einTier 10-29-02 03:39 PM

Man, this is just sitting outside in my car. I cannot wait to play it.

BB around here won't put the copies on the shelf until tomorrow. My pre-ordered online copy was backordered. So, I cancelled the order, grabbed a brochure from BB and then had Wal-Mart price match it.

Sweet.

Don't you just hold "down"?

uteotw 10-29-02 04:37 PM

I got mine today pre-ordered from EB. I know I could MAYBE get it $10 cheaper at BB tomorrow, but it was worth it just to have it in hand. I, too, am stuck at work now, but will definitely have a long night ahead of me (esp. since I want to watch the premier of 24 too!). The '80s songs on this game alone are reason enough for me to own it--the track listing is incredible--and the motorcycles and screwdrivers make it even better...

junior 10-29-02 05:05 PM

To pop a wheelie, I believe you need to holding "down" before you hit the gas. For a "stoppie", go full speed, then lean forward by pushing "up" and hitting both the hand brake and the regular break.

Venom 10-29-02 05:19 PM

anyone pick any of the soundtracks and get some codes?

Rypro 525 10-29-02 05:23 PM

damn, i gotta wait until christmas, but ill probably get this weekend. how much is it at eb?

lwhy? 10-29-02 06:54 PM

Did anyone get a $5 digital coupon from Bestbuy for preordering? I did and used it on a copy of the new Nirvana cd. I got it for $6.50. Pretty sweet!
My copy of Vice City shipped today and I should get it by Friday or Saturday I hope. My friend paid $3 more and used 2nd day shipping He will get his copy before mine. I am so mad. I do not know why I didn't do that. Does anyone know if the price of GTA3 is going down?

DVD Lamer 10-29-02 07:43 PM

Unless sales suffer, it won't go down in price.

MasterofDVD 10-29-02 08:19 PM

I raced to TRU after work tonight to get it.

The guy in front of me was with his grandson and the clerk had to ask if he was buying the game for the kid. He said yes and asked why. An explanation of the M rating followed. It was obvious he had no clue what the game was about. But he still bought it for the kid.

Another very rude guy came pushing his way into the rows of games and was looking all around really fast. I had already paid fr mine but I wanted to mess with him. So I told the one lady I was chatting with that I better take Vice City and get home to play. This rude SOB came charging over and asked where I foudn it since it wasn't on the shelf. I told him that they were only selling preorders and that everywhere in town was sold out. And from what I heard it's true.....every store in the area has been picked clean.

But anyway......the game is great so far. I'm being good so far and just looking around. No chases or incidents just yet. The cutscenes are just great. The cars are all very impressive. I need weapons and money badly. I've invited tons of people over the next two days since I'm off and I'm gonna play till I pass out.

darkside 10-29-02 09:08 PM

Played for about four hours. I've done a few missions. Kill the pizza boy is hillarious. I also found the chainsaw and oh my god is it fun to run around and hack people with that thing. All games will be put aside while I play this game. I just hope I finish it in time for Metroid Prime.

Spoiler:
Its inside a hotel room. Can't remember the exact location, but its inside an open door. When you enter it says Apartment 30. You turn a corner and go into the bloody bathroom to find the chainsaw. Big homage to Scarface.

Is it just me but in DTS sound I get no action from my sub but on stereo I get plenty of lows. Is this a DTS thing or do I need to tweak my reciever?

spankyj 10-29-02 10:00 PM

Played some of the missions today - man is this game tight. It keeps on getting better. The motorcycles are amazing, as are the weapons. I've really gotten a kick out of trying to race away from the cops with the rice-rocket - it is so hard. The rain makes this incredibly tough, still loving the game.

To anyone that knows, what is the purpose of the trails feature?

Decker 10-29-02 10:02 PM

Well, I finally get to chime in on my thread! :)
Picked it up at Best Buy today. The A$$holes who work there say they have just given away the last of their 250 copies to a family that I had just helped by informing them that the game came out today. I felt sick. Well, karma was looking out for me because while I was arguing with the video game guy who refused to even give me a raincheck, the mother of this family runs up to me and lets me know that their salesgirl had a few copies stashed behind her counter. Finding out she was busted, she reluctantly rang up a copy for me :D. I used the $5 coupon from the Netflix case and a $5 GC I got in the mail for buying NFL2K3 and got it for $29.99 + tax!

Well, I'm loving it so far. It doesn't look all that much better, but it's a blast to play. Vice city is huge. The moped is a blast, but I don't remember all that many in the 80's that came with FM radios. These cops are a lot smarter; I'm afraid that will make the game a lot harder for me. Fortunately failing in GTA is a whole lot more fun than failing in any other video game.
Has anyone successfully escaped from the cops on that fast motorcycle? It handles great, but one bump and you're a projectile.
The music really makes the game. Cruising down the street in a Banshee or a (whatever that fake Ferrari is) with David Lee Roth or Bryan Adams? It doesn't get any better than that!
Does anyone know if you can make Tony dance in the club instead of just standing on the dance floor staring at everyone like a dork?

One other question : My receiver is "DTS ready" and my DTS decoder is in my DVD player, so I'm pretty screwed, huh?

Are you refering to the ability to turn off the light trails like in GTA3? This seems to improve framerate and some folks like the clearer look better, but I dig that pink neon glow.

Speaking of rain - how do you wipe those raindrops off the "camera lens"?

spankyj 10-30-02 07:36 AM

Thanks Decker - I figured it was something to do with that.

Haha, I think the rain is there to stay. Have you tried the chainsaw yet? See what that does to the camera!

spankyj 10-30-02 07:43 AM

P.S.

Anyone get into the movie studio yet?

Good stuff - check it out.

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure I was getting much more of an LFE response after switching to DTS.
