Xbox Live installation question

Okay, my Xbox Live Beta kit should get here today. But my cable modem is on the opposite end of the house from my Xbox.

Here's my question. Should (or can) I simply split the cable outside of the house and run it to both the cable modem and the Xbox (well, a router/hub, then the Xbox)? Or, should I run the single cable without splitting it into a network hub and run ethernet cables to both the cable modem and the xbox?

By the way, the cable will have to be run on the outside of the house, if that matters. And also, I don't have cable tv, just cable modem.

Thanks for your help.
