weird xbox problems

me and my friends were playing doa3 and someone brought over his new s controller. we loaded the game up with the s controller plugged in and it wouldn't let us get past the player selection screen. at first we thought it was the xbox that was screwy, but we tried it on another xbox and got the same problems.

last night we were playing nhl 2002, we play this game a lot, and all of a sudden, the sound stopped working in the game. we'd hear the xbox sound when you first turn it on, but the sound was gone in the game. we didn't change any settings, we just turned it on from the last time we played.

these problems remind me of pc issues. I'm not looking forward to upgrading drivers and patching games.

The first problem sounds like a defective controller, those are on every console. I had one for the Dreamcast.

The 2nd problem sounds weird, but is it now working properly?

Not sure what you mean about upgrading drivers or patching games, since neither of that is going to happen with the xbox nor has it (the DOA3 patch was for extra costumes, not bugs).

I believe he's just saying he's afraid it's going to happen.

Patches are a sticky issue. While I don't like games being released in beta form, it sure is nice when online games release patches to fix large loopholes that slipped through. Then there's games that have complicated balancing issues (eg, Blizzard's) that really can't be resolved until thousands of people have played them.

it could've been a faulty controller, we used the same ones on 2 different boxes. the nhl problem is fixed now, but the ea sports guy doesn't say his ea sports line anymore. I dunno how this one got fixed.

I've had a few games freeze up also. I don't remember what games, but its happened.

another thing I've noticed with xbox are its geometry problems. an examle would be the football field in nfl 2k3. if you turn on an option that changes the perspective to the runners, you'll notice that the lines don't seem correct. I've also noticed these types of problems in dead to rights when they do the geometry for walls on buildings.

Yeah I agree, SOCOM has a few exploits, one on each level I think that let you cheat. I wish they would patch that.

You're sitting too close to your tv set.

Seriously thought, I have no idea what you are seeing here. Does this not appear on the PS2 version? Any other examples?

How does this work? (Or not as the case may be.) I mean, how does the controller screw it up? I've never seen anything or heard anything like that before. (Not saying it doesn't happen, just curious) Could two shorted wires be an issue? Wouldn't the console have some sort of protection against that?

Honestly I have no idea. I think Aghama is an Electrical Engineer so maybe he can explain the technical side of it. It's like that with other things as well. Plugging glitchy mice into a computer can make the computer act funny. I had keyboard for my PDA that when I plugged it in it made my PDA eventually die, the reason I know this is I tried using it on another PDA and that PDA went crazy as well.

I'm not a EE, but almost...

I can see a short perhaps opening and closing sending eratic signals, but still a console should be able to code that out if they take the time. But hey, I'm wrong all the time so...

has anyone else tried the s controller with doa3? we've played it with and without the booster pack on 2 different xbox's. the game freezes every time. my friend is gonna pick up one of those newer designed boxes soon, we'll see how it works on his.

that nfl 2k3 problem doesn't happen on the ps2. I've seen a lotta weird geometry problems with the xbox. I can't think of a better way to describe it, but its one of those things that has to do with hardware and not software.
