Civilization 3 - the new thread

with the new Play the World expansion set to come out at the end of this month, i thought i'd revive discussion of this marvelous game.

first off, i'm curious at what level you (other people) are playing? also, what number of civs you like to play against? also, would you recommend playing as any particular civs...

i guess i just want to know your "favorite settings".

for instance, mine are:

Terrain: Huge Continent Wet Temperate 5 Billion year-old
Civ to play: Americans or Iroqois

(i think expansionist civs have a large advantage from the get-go: scouts that can explore and who will never create barbarians from found villages..)

i currently fluctuate between playing as a warlord with almost all of the opposing civs (sometimes all), or playing as the next level (regent?!) with only a few opposing civs (4 or 5).

i was just beginning to get the hang of civ 2 (moving up to king level) when civ 3 was released..

ALSO, i'm curious if other people get as increasingly uninterested in a game as it progresses?! i sometimes make it into the industrial age, but i get rather bored with the game fairly quickly from their on. i hope that's not just me..

anyway, discussions begin now!

(oh yeah, what do you think of the Play the World expansion? from what you've read/heard, of course...)

Cool. I hope this thread does well. I just got Civ III as a birthday gift this past weekend, and I've just installed it. I hope I enjoy it as much as I think I will.

The pacing of this game seemed very slow when I played it at a friend's house. I mean it was felt like it was a real time game. Was it just a kind of game we were playing ( are there various modes? ) or am I just not nearly patient enough for this game.

My boss is just crazy over this game and I had no idea that any type of expansion was coming out. She'll be thrilled when I tell her cause she's having surgery and will be out for 6 weeks. This might be a great way for her to pass the time.

The game -- not so marvelous. Even the Call to Power games were superior to 3. And of course, Civ II blows it out of the water. What's up with no stacks, anyway? Too many things missing or wrong. Waiting for Master of Orion III...

If you want a Civ III-type game that's a million times more fun at a fraction of the price, just pick up Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, which goes for $10 at Best Buy. It has a lot of cool features, more engaging play, a distinctive atmosphere, and is just a far superior game.

So, I just tried to play this game again -- big mistake. It's so frustrating, illogical, and irritatingly difficult.

So I was pissed at the Zulus. I went into peace negotiations with them knowing they would never accept and I was probably just going to quit anyway. So I put all of their cities in their side, a per-turn tithe of 999999999, and a variety of other things. Imagine my surprise after, like, the tenth time I clicked on it he says, "Well, I've considered it, and I think that's fair." So all of his cities go to me except the capital. I tried it a couple turns later on the Babylonians -- worked again.

Of course, getting a million cities like that is unmanageable in that game, so I just gave up and crapped all over this thread.

I loved Civ II, it's one of the only games I've played multiple times after finishing. I picked up Civ III the first day it came out and I played it for about a week then set it aside in favor of some other new games. Recently I went back to it (this past weekend) and I'm knee deep in Civ obsession. It should be called CIV-crack because I can't stop playing it once I start. It's always "one more turn, one more turn". Next thing I know it's 5:00am.

I tried Call to Power and didn't like it at all, it didn't have the depth or ingenuity of the real Civ games. I have to agree though that once I get up towards the modern age, it gets less interesting. I'd almost be satisfied without ever getting past 1800 AD. I set pretty much everything to random...except continents. I don't like having the little islands everywhere.

I love the specialized units (except when they're used against me). I got wiped out by the Persian Immortals when i tried to play Regent level. I dropped back to Warlord and now my Russian Cossacks are flooding over my enemies! I love the Leader concept and creation of armies/hurrying wonders.

If you're unhappy with the AI, try picking up the patches (1.29 is the newest) or just don't put the computer ina spot where it will do dumb things. I've never had the computer players make stupid deals, but then I don't push them. I treat it like I need to be careful in all negotiations.

The expansion should be great, new tribes and multiplayer modes! I always play with the maximum number of tribes against me....more to conquer.
