Should Microsft trade in our old controllers

Excuse me if this has been discussed, but I just got back from toy's r us with my new s-controller for x-box. It got me thinking, this is just another way Bill has got me again (it's bad enough he has me hooked on windows and windows pocket pc 2002). Now I am off buying another stupid controller that should have been researched properly from the beginning. Should Microsoft either accept trade-in's on our old ones for a straight up new one, or should they at least take some $$$ of the new purchase of a controller-s? Would this restore the buisness relationship between x-box owners and microsoft? Would this give us faith that they are faithful to tehir loyal owners of their system? Maybe I am just ranting, if so sorry. It's Monday and I need to vent.

No they shouldn't. The original controller is fantastic. Many people like it. If your hands are too small to enjoy it, that's your problem. Judging from your signiture that's not the only part of you that's small.*

:p

*I'm joking around here, the rest I'm serious!

BOrtiz 10-14-02 11:49 PM

I didn't think of that when I posted...that's tight bro...real tight.

Josh H 10-14-02 11:56 PM

I agree they should have done better research. It seems that most people prefer the type S or other systems controllers to the original.

It's just too big and bulky for most people. I have at least average size hands (can palm a basketball as long as it has some tread on it) and it's uncomfortable to me.

The type S would be perfect if not for the white buttons being so far down. At least they don't seem to be used super often in the handful of games I've played.

That said, MS should have done some kind of trade in program when the type S came out. At least the new bundle includes the type S.

MS doesn't owe anyone a different controller no more than Nintendo owes me a different controller because the thing is too damn small and the analogue joysticks suck, or Sony owes me a different controller because the dual shock analogue sticks are too close together and hard to use. Be glad that MS went out of their way to create a controller that people who didn't like their original controller would like. Sony and Nintendo sure didn't bother (Nintendo they can take their fancy Limited Edition Mango Berry colored controller and stick it up Mario's...errrrr NEVERMIND :p)

Josh H 10-15-02 12:07 AM

Oh they definitely don't owe anyone anything. A trade in deal/discount would have just been a good business strategy as it would have improved their image in the eyes of those that had an x-box and hated the original controller.

kegman 10-15-02 06:14 AM

I personally like the original better. I heard that they might stop making them. I hope not. I hate the S controller.

Too small? Its the same size as the Dual Shock and the analog is great on it.

Anyway, since MS did bring out a new one and they did it because of all the complaints about the original they could have offered a replacement. I've got an original one thats never used and I would love to get rid of. Once most people try the S controller they have no interest in using the original. We usually flip a coin and the loser is stuck using the original.

BTW the biggest complaint from people using the original I've heard is not the size but the offset way the buttons are layed out. You end up hitting the wrong buttons a lot because of the way they are arranged at a weird angle.

I like the original.

It's not like MS was sitting around and said, "Hey lets make have two controllers for the US market and make it difficult for developers to assign button layouts properly, because its what the people want!"

It was more like the original controller was hindering potential sales. That's why you will find it packed in the new console bundle, not the original. MS is obviously recognizing that it is better for more people, either that or they made way to many for japan...

Stoolie 10-15-02 07:20 AM

darkside, I'll take your old original controller.

The bottom line is that no controller is going to satisfy everyone on all levels. Personally I think it's a great idea that Microsoft offers two different sizes. The problem is that they weren't both available at launch. That said, I hope they don't stop production of the original, since that's the one I prefer. All the controllers are too expensive anyway. Sorry, that's off topic. :D

Microsoft doesn't owe anybody anything. It's not like they hid the original controllers from view. Everybody who bought an Xbox knew what they were getting, and a lot of people like the original controllers.

Derrich 10-15-02 07:57 AM

I like the original XBox controller a lot. Like the Dreamcast controller and the Jaguar controller, it seems like it was built for people with normal sized hands and not 5 year olds. My fingers begin to hurt after long periods with the dual shock. The two analog sticks are so close together that I can only use one at a time.

Which would have been a feat unto itself, OMFGLOL.

ah, such sly humor, hehe

When the controller first came out, I know places like EB and others I am sure too offered $10.00 to trade in your old one towards the purchase of a new one.

Get Me Coffee 10-15-02 09:13 AM

Yo Micro$oft! Youz aw me a small controlla!

;)

al_bundy 10-15-02 09:33 AM

I like the included controller. But then my hands are larger than average.

I have small hands and I love the original controller and hate the s-contoller. I hate where the white and black buttons are on the s.

KingSmoth 10-15-02 10:24 AM

I hate both controllers. Both of them have put the white/black buttons in an awkward place, and on the S, even the two menu buttons are out of place. I still think they're just too big.

Josh H 10-15-02 10:36 AM

Will people with average sized hands complaining about the size of the controllers answer the poll in this thread.

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=243530

I had a idea that the way people hold the controller might factor into which one they prefer, especially for people with average sized hands who seem to be split on prefering large or small controllers. Or it could be totall irrelevant, as most people hold controllers the same way and just a few odd balls the other way that I noticed.

The only way to find out is to have some people actually answer the question.

KingSmoth 10-15-02 10:42 AM

Josh,

On the Xbox web site, under Hardware, there is a little article about how they came to make the Controller S, saying it is all about how people grip the controller basically.
I'd post the link to it, but the site is down right now.

Josh H 10-15-02 10:46 AM

Cool, it looks like my observation has some merit.

JaxComet 10-15-02 11:49 AM

I have both controllers and don't have a problem with either.....
