What was the coolest old school FPS?

The doom thread go me thinking about all those good times. Don't get me wrong, doom was fun. I'll never forget firing the BFG down a long corridor, running behind my opponent, and killing him spontaneously (BFG had an area of effect damage, just it wasn't eminating from the bullet, but from you.

Rise of The triad had heatseeking missiles!

Duke Nukem had attitude, not to mention laser tripmines, decoy holograms, and the freeze gun where you kicked the guy and he shattered.

Samurai warrior had more funny comments, Drivable tanks, sticky bombs, and oh yeah, tactical nukes

Another one, Sin? Blood? Had narration of kills, with comments like "Anal Carnage", which was cool as a 12 year old.

What do you remember about the genre defining FPS games?

Blood and Duke3d were my favs.

Then there was GoldenEye...

I think Apogee pumped out like 5 other FPS other then Rise of the Triad, all based on the same engine.

I always liked Duke Nukem over Doom. It had more attitude. Does Price of Persia count? I loved that game.

This to me is the only choice. Original doom was pretty sweet too.

If System Shock 1 or 2 count, I vote for them.

I enjoyed rise of the traid. it was pretty fun multiplayer. double hand guns and all

But I must admit, I stayed up nights and days just playing the original wolfenstien and then spear of destiny.
I saved at the point you are about to fight hitler and kept on playing that level. Loved it. it was sooo damn cool.

Would Operation: Wolf count?

Just kidding, the first FPS I remember playing was Bungie's Marathon back in 1992-93...

Rise of the Triad was one of my favorites. Highly innovative and fun and the mapmaker was easy as pie.

Strife was the first FPS with RPG elements that I can think of.

Shogo MAD was innovative, but lame.

Duke was innovative.

Doom 2 was awesome.

Heretic and Hexen were both really cool.

I never liked the original System Shock... it never really worked right on my PC.

Burn Cycle wasn't quite a FPS, but it was hella cool

Quarantine was a FPS with a car... Crazy Taxi meets Blade Runner.

There was this one crappy one that I enjoyed playing - I remember it being the first FPS that you could walk around or get in a vehicle and kill people. The multiplayer was a blast. I forget the name.

Carmageddon was cool - not a FPS, but worth mentioning for nostalgia purposes.

For the PC I would have to go with Doom2, Duke3D, and maybe Dark Forces

For Consoles GOLDENEYE

Goldeneye was by far the best FPS! Some of my greatest video game memeories come from Goldeneye! I'm holding onto this game forever, might not play it....but it's a great memeory of old times with friends!

I actually didn't play a whole lot of old-school FPSs, but my favorite would have to be Duke3D. Its weapons and attitude made it a really fun and memorable game.

Quake 2 for PC (although seeing Quake 1 in OpenGL was pretty awesome for the first time).

Goldeneye for N64 on console

I'm not pissed...

It's just frustrating. My biggest problem with it is that since there are no deadlines, the developers might be slacking off instead of working on it.

Not sure if it counts, but Mechwarrior 2 was an incredible experience in its day.

The original Doom was the game that got me into PC gaming, though.

Actually - first time I heard it was from They Live - Roddy Piper says "I came here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I am all out of bubblegum."

I remember that movie, but I associate it with Duke!
