Originally posted by ScandalUMD Well, the problem with the internet is that folks are likely to believe whatever someone says if that person can write at an 8th grade level or better. To beleive that Nintendo... they shapped it and made it what it is today Random capitalization, goofy phrasing... Id say a third grade level. |
Credibility = flawless spelling? Is this the Gaming-Age forum?
If you've followed his rock solid posts for years, you wouldn't be shooting this messenger. By the way, in your two sentences... I think youre giving him too much credit. Random capitalization, goofy phrasing... Id say a third grade level. |

By the way, in your two sentences... I don't know how you can determine whether his information is accurate or not based on his posts, since, if his numbers seem off, he can just say Toys R Us is different than other retailers. The fact is, we have no idea who this guy is, what he does, or how accurate his data is. What's more, he doesn't give any numbers. He's intentionally vague, possibly because he doesn't have any real information. I don't know what sort of "rock solid" information he's given in the past, but I am highly skeptical that Toys R Us or any other kind of retailer would be collecting this data and sending it around to employees. I'm especially skeptical that retailers would be collecting data on tie-in rates, since this does not affect them at all. The fact that he believes EA is the largest games publisher undermines his credibility more than his spelling errors. The recent NPD numbers had Xbox and Gamecube running neck and neck with a slight lead for Xbox in the US and a significant lead globally for Gamecube. I trust that more than this guy. What remains is to debate the significance of this. If you like MS, it's impressive that they entered the market and are competing with a veteran like Nintendo. If you like Nintendo, they're doing just fine, selling tons of first-party software, while Microsoft is only competing because it's heavily subsidized by Microsoft. In the meantime, I'm thinking about all those GBA/GC connector cables Nintendo will sell thanks to Zelda. I bet they pull in a big profit on a thing like that. |
Petty bickering aside, the actual numbers won't even come close to matching the original prediction, which is that the Xbox would come #1 in console sales this holiday season.
As I've already said in this thread, not in this generation. |
I've got about a dozen consoles connected to my A/V system at any one time and I've been playing home console games since the late 70s... and if there is one thing that this thread is its "senseless". There are certain things being discussed here that have no relevance to anything really. People talking about "AAA" titles or what games are "good" is the main one. Everyone has their own personal preferences. Personally, I cant stand RPGs and think the GTA series is pretty lame as well.... so I haven't picked up a ps2 yet. I own a GC because I like the Resident Evil series and 0 and 4 will be GC exclusive (for a while anyway). I own an xbox for fps, sports, 3d shooter and stealth type games. IMO, Splinter Cell is the best new game released in the last 5 years, and therefore the system I "like" the most right now is the Xbox. Others can/will/should disagree, and thats fine. All of you console war fan boys need to do a whole lot less smack talking. It pretty much makes you look like a fool, and you're not convincing anyone... so... why are you doing it? Go play whatever system you are in love with and leave the rest of us to discuss our fav hobby.

I'm especially skeptical that retailers would be collecting data on tie-in rates, since this does not affect them at all. Also, when I was working last Sunday, they gave out the top sales numbers for the top toys for the season. I can only remember a few, but the top selling items (based on sales dollars, I believe) at OUR TRU for the 2002 Xmas season were... 1. Playstation 2 2. Yu-gi-oh card collector tins 3. Xbox can't remember any more. They read off the top 20, I think. I can't remember if GameCube was on there or not. So someone claiming to have TRU's national sales data could probably get it pretty easily, if he wanted to. I probably could, if I went in and looked around on our computer system. Just FYI. X |
Originally posted by mr.snowmizer Huh? TRU has always sold more GCs per month than Xboxes. For Christmas, TRU has sold 'clearly more Xboxes'. Then, there are numerous reports than Best Buy, an Xbox-friendly retailer, has seen the usual Xbox lead greatly expanded. If the trend is the same at both retailing extremes, it's pretty safe to project a winner. You're skeptical that someone high enough can check the computerized inventory and sales numbers of a retailer? Why in the world is that? Would it help if I told you he's a buyer for TRU who is supposed to know what those numbers are? I don't suppose it would... anybody can say anything on the internet. What does November's numbers have to do with December? What are you talking about? This was a thread on holiday predictions, many people made their own, and now the results are clear, whether you want to wait for official numbers or not. If you want to start a fascinating discussion of the profit margins of GBA/GC connectors, this doesn't seem like the right place. [/B] |
Originally posted by joltaddict I dont use apostrophes. Theyre a communist conspiracy. "beleive" and 'shapped" OTOH is pretty bad for somebody claiming to be an exec at a major retailer. Its a sliding scale. Hes not posting "teh" or "looser" but its still bad. |

Originally posted by darkside I don't think the order has changed. GameCube did well in Europe and Japan so its still PS2, GameCube, and Xbox third worldwide. The PS2 lead is so huge I really don't know if the numbers even matter anymore. |
I stoled this from HTF
Japanese Sales figures from http://www.the-magicbox.com/topten.htm Hardware Sales Chart Total Sales in 2002 GameBoy Advance - 3,146,900 PlayStation 2 - 3,511,200 GameCube - 1,129,300 Xbox - 312,400 PSone - 219,000 SwanCrystal - 112,800 WonderSwan Color - 121,600 GameBoy Color - 83,900 |
Originally posted by Tamrok Xbox has overtaken Gamecube in Europe. There have been numerous articles about it on several game industry websites. Of course, Xbox is still doing horribly in Japan but I'd be surprised if Gamecube has sold enough in Japan to overcome the gap in Europe and more importantly, here in North America. Worldwide, it's probably pretty close but it looks like Xbox may now have a slight lead. Thanks Gallant for those Japan numbers :) |
