I hope that titles do arrive in the same ballpark as Sunshine & GTA3 for the Xbox. That would be most excellent. I am not holding my breath though. Come 10/23, I won't really care about future releases, at least for a few weeks. :)

While browsing through GameInformer, I ran across the whole Gigex survey information and couldn't remember if it was posted yet or not here on the forum, but I remembered this thread about "holiday predictions"... how funny is that that I was going to post this poll info in this thread thinking it was fresh info and the thread was started about the poll. Well, at least I didn't start a new thread. :)
Might as well resurrect this since the holiday shopping season starts in about a month. Oh - here's the entire Gigex thing again as well... SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 27 -- The results of the largest survey of gamers this year revealed that Microsoft's Xbox would be the game console of choice this holiday season. Over 12,000 gamers were queried, "What console gaming system do you plan to buy in the coming year?" and 39% answered they plan to buy a Microsoft Xbox, 27% will buy a SONY Playstation 2, and 17% plan to purchase Nintendo's GameCube. The study also showed that game demos have the most influence over game purchase decisions. When asked "Which of these items highly influence your game purchase decisions?" nearly 8 out of 10 respondents (78%) ranked game demos the number 1 factor, far ahead of the number 2 response: game reviews (47%). Both television commercials (35%) and magazine ads (31%) trailed furthest behind as drivers of retail purchase behavior. The survey was commissioned by Gigex, Inc., the leading online distributor of video game trailers and demos, was conducted online between July 15th and August 15th, 2002 and is the result of 12,288 responses. "The growing popularity of Gigex's service puts us in the unique position of having our finger on the pulse of our 26 million monthly visitors," said Mark Friedler, CEO of Gigex, Inc. "The power of the demo and trailer experience shows in the strong influence on gamers' purchase decisions. Our own data shows that 66% of users who view an online demo or trailer visit a retail website. With strong competition from many quality titles, effective use of game previews is a cost effective method to attract customers to a new title, differentiate it and highlight the product's quality. The survey results clearly show the power of a positive demo/preview experience and its power to drive traffic and purchase activity across the channel." The survey shows that gamers will be ringing the cash registers at retail stores across the country this year, with 59% of gamers purchasing game products from Electronic Stores, 43% from Computer Superstores, 35% from Department Stores, and 19% Online. The study also revealed that the majority of Gigex visitors are avid gamers who have been playing video games for 6 years or more (73%), play 20 hours or more a week (24%), and consider themselves to be advanced (44%) gamers. Complete results of this research are available by contacting Gigex, Inc at [email protected]. About Gigex, Inc. It will be interesting to see how sales of the X-box sega bundle and the Gamecube Mario bundle stack up.
I'd say both will sell well, probably around the same amount. MS and Nintendo will likely finish in a near tie for second place IMO. |

No way.

Something other than Yeah
Might as well post some real news.
Microsoft is very positve about the Xbox going into the holidays. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/busine...rosoft18.shtml Has an article basically showing how well Microsoft did last year with sales of both Windows XP and the Xbox. Here is some of the Xbox info. Sales from the Home and Entertainment division, which produces Xbox, reached $485 million, up from $267 in the same quarter last year, when Xbox hadn't yet launched. Xbox sales made up "a significant portion" of the division's revenue, Anderson said, declining to provide detail. Xbox has failed to make some sales targets, but corporate controller Scott Boggs said it has "good momentum going into the holiday season." I saw a huge endcap of the Mario bundles at Target, but they hadn't gotten the new Xbox bundles in yet. I'm betting they will have a display as well. Lots of good options for video game buyers this Christmas. |
It's going to be one interesting video game Christmas. All systems have kick@$$ line ups! Big heavy hitters on both GC and XBOX. If any of the two get ahead of the other it's going to be very marginal. It looks to me as a pure tie....but we'll see.

I tell ya the game wars are heating up. Ive had a gamecube for a while and i only had a few games i kept. Now i have almost tripled my collection in the last month and there are a ton of good games which have or will come out this month, plus a bunch more the next few months. This Xbox bundle has even drawn me in and i thought id never buy one. I picked it up today since i really want Shen-mue II, but there are a few others which peak my intrest. I have strange tastes in games so im glad to see a lot of stuff i like

I think the XBOX will be KING this Holiday, if not, Next year it will (Halo 2 and Doom 3)

Splinter Cell vs. Vice City... should be interesting...
Interesting to note - we have yet to see any sales figures for Xbox since June/July. Perhaps on the one year anniversary of the system coming this month? |

Vice City will kill Splinter Cell in sales. It's the sequel to one of the biggest games ever, and the PS2 users base dwarfs the X-boxes, so there's just no way for Splinter Cell to sell more.
As for quality, that remains to be seen. Personally I'm very interested in Splinter Cell (assuming it comes to the PS2 or GC), and could care less about Vice City. |
Splinter Cell won't be coming to other systems (maybe PC) afaik. I never meant to suggest Splinter Cell could possibly outsell Vice City. I also never meant to suggest the Xbox could catch up to the PS2... as far as sales go for just this holiday, with all the polls taken and bundles and games considered, I agree with White Knight that the Xbox will move the most hardware. Also - just because there's a bundle and just because we haven't seen sales figures doesn't really mean that they haven't been selling hardware or software - it just means that they wanted an edge this holiday and that they haven't released sales data yet. It certainly could mean that their sales are disappointing, but you never know.

According to EGM's preview, Splintercell is coming to the PS2 and GC next year.
It is coming to the PC for sure as theres a "PC CDROM" logo along with the X-box logo in the ad. |

I can't wait to be playing Splintercell with my purple GC controller!
