PS2 Network adaptor: not compatible with some systems?

Hey all,
Just got back from Bestbuy, where there was a line of people waiting at opening to buy the network adaptor. Some were grabbing three or four of them (including some employees), but they had enough for the crowd. Reminds me of buying my PS2 back in the day (at the same BB, no less!)

While I was waiting in the line, I was reading the back of the box. It states that the network adaptor may not be compatible with some PS2s. It then says to look for details inside the box (which doesn't make any sense... you have to open it to see if you can use it?). Anyone have any problems connecting these to 1st release machines? I'm assuming the problem comes with the oldest machines. Or maybe it doesn't work with imports and they're just covering themselves. Any ideas?
