Will GTA: Vice City make you own a PS2?
It's exclusive to Sony. It's the sequel to one of the biggest selling games ever. It's almost guaranteed to be another classic.
For those without a PS2, will this game (arguably the "biggest" release of the year) finally result in a purchase of a PS2?
I'm leaning towards 'yes' already and only a little info has been released.

I'll say no. If someone was so into GTA they would have already purchase a PS2 to play it. The sequel will only bring in marginal sales of PS2. If people start buying the PS2 it isn't because of the GTA: Vice City. The people who wanted to play GTA already purchased PS2. So a lot of the people I would imagine made the jump to PS2 because of GTA.

You're counting out people who don't have PS2's who played the first GTA on a friends PS2 ... I can think of at least 3 people who will be buying a PS2 for GTA:VC.

Never played GTA3 on a PS2, but did play the PC version and had a blast. Will wait for the PC release, not enough pull to make me buy a PS2. I already own an Xbox & GC.

No, this is not a system seller for me, especially when you know a bigger and better PC version will be coming later.
If any one new game were to get me to buy a PS2, it would be Kingdom Hearts.

Isn't vice city not an actual sequel? It takes place in the past and it is just a new location and not actually a new engine or anything, just an addon that won't require the original if you will.

No, because it will be on the PC early in 2003. I will just wait for it there because I like the better graphics as well as the keyboard/mouse controls.

I bought a Ps2 for the quirky Japanese games that wouldn't come to the other systems but will probably still pick up this game. It's on my next 20 list.

I play all of my games currently on the PC. But Vice City will severely tempt me to get a PS2. After playing GTA3 on friends PS2's and getting it on the PC I'm certainly hooked.
I know I'd rather hold out for the PC version of Vice City but it looks like it's gonna be a long wait again like it was for GTA3. But if I do get a PS2 GTA isn't the only game that I'd wanna play.

I already have a PS2, but if I didn't I wouldn't buy one for GTA: VC. I just got GTA3 a couple weeks ago and I'm pretty underwhelmed.
It's very good, but not as great as all the hype made it out to be IMO.
I'm not in to openended stuff, and got sick of just running around causing mayhem pretty quick.
The missions are hit and miss, some are very cool and some are lame. I assume they get better the further you get.
At any rate it's just not drawing me in. I got NCAA 2003 the same day and have played it more than GTA3 and now Mario Sunshine will be monopolizing my time for quite a while.
As it stands now with all the great games coming out this fall, I probably won't even pick up GTA3 VC as I doubt I'll be anywhere near done with GTA3 by then.
Also, as stated above I don't think GTA VC will be a huge system seller as most people interested in the game probably already bought a PS2 for GTA3.
I'm sure there are people out there that have played GTA3 at a buddies place and loved it but didn't get a PS2 yet that will buy one for VC, but I suspect that's a relatively small number of people.
At any rate, Sony has won the console war this generation so it's a moot point anyway.

GTA Vice City looks amazing. The GFX look almost like the PC version of GTA3 so far, and with all the new options:
150 cars, 40 weapons (chainsaw = own!), go inside tons of buildings, fly helicopters, deliver pizzas, etc, etc
The game looks great from screenshots and even better in action. October can't come any sooner.
And for those holding out until the PC version, you have about 2 years, as the PC version is due in 2004

Take a look at the PSM article as this will give much info on the game.
