Sony's always been very clear about wanting a set top box, I don't think anyone other than Sony fanboys could argue otherwise.

Both Sony and MS have been clear about their desires to rule the entertainment center.

I never really thought Sony as going to go the set-top box route. I'm glad to hear that they are though. This will get Nintendo back in the game IMO.

Sony was first with the DVD player and made comments around the PS2's release about how they wanted to make a machine that people could do more than play games on.

I'm happy Sony is. I don't see the set-top box being all that popular and I'd like to see Sony's sales drop so the playing field is a bit more even.

Don't expect to see Sony's sales drop anytime soon. Don't be bitter because Sony keeps having sucess. The only way to make the playing field even is by making each company design the same product (which we know will never happen). Nintendo and Microsoft clearly had the more advanced product and Sony still took the market, what else do you want? Charge a tax to people who own a Playstation? Require the donation of a kidney with every game purchased? To think, if Nintendo wouldn't have blown off Sony all those years ago, Kellehair wouldn't be complaining today. Makes you think.

I was reading an article in on of my TokyoPops and they mentioned a while back about Sony wanting gamers to implant circuits in their fingers for more realistic gaming with vibration control and no need for a controller. It might be a April Fools Joke, I need to dig through the moving boxes but this was before the XBOX and Game Cube came out.

It appears that way. Both Nintendo and Microsoft put out better hardware but the PS2 is creaming them both. The mere anticipation of the PS2 was enough to kill the Dreamcast as well. Sony's got the mainstream name recognition right now and that's not gonna change unless they put out a product that just can't compare to the competition's.

I'm not bitter. I just don't think it's good for the game industry for one system to have such a big sales lead.

Are you serious? Nintendo almost killed the video game industry back in the day when they had a monopoly. Also, I think Sony might have churned out a better console than the PS2 if they didn't win the previous generation so convincingly in the end. Sony knew their next console was gonna sell well even if it wasn't too great.

Sega killed themselves by releasing systems too soon after each other and by not supporting the systems they released. They did this twice and the first time hurt them - and the last time nearly killed them. They pumped tons of R&D into the Dreamcast and it was to be their saving grace. It almost was, but it wasn't enough. They supported it as long as they could and I think they did a wise thing. Maybe someday they'll get back into consoles. Who knows... but it wasn't the PS2 anticipation that killed Dreamcast... Sega's name was tarnished. Many games actually look better on the Dreamcast than they do on the PS2... people were too afraid that Sega would abandon them if they bought the system. Plus, their advertising budget was squashed since they were in financial trouble. I'm sure you remember seeing Dreamcast commercials, but it was mostly for 3rd party games that did their own advertising. I read an article once that talked about the sadness Sega felt for not being able to keep making consoles - they were very proud of the Dreamcast and that's why I think someday they may return to the Console market (it's as possible as anything else)

PS2 is creaming them because it had a year head start. People go to where the games are (not are going to be someday). At launch of Xbox and GCN, the PS2 had several 'must have' titles coming out. This Christmas will have 3 systems with 'must have' software... it should be interesting since the PS2 will be showing age and all 3 will have impressive game libraries (depending on your perspective and tastes).

Nintendo used to be the big sales leader. Before that it was Atari. Now it's Sony. At one point it was Sega, but not for long and not by all that much. Someday it may be Nintendo again or it may be Microsoft or maybe the PC will once again rise and dominate the game sales charts (unlikely). Competition is good because it drives these companies to make better products fighting for our money. All 3 systems have enough good games that someone could pick one and be happy for a long time.

As for the rest of this thread - Sony makes all sorts of lies up about the power of their chips. Nothing new... maybe they were able to get the speeds they say in laboratory conditions using liquid nitrogen cooling and the processor incinerated in 5 seconds anyway after producing such a clock speed for 2 nanoseconds. What we do know for sure is that the PS3 will kick ass and I'll surely get one (as long as I hold off on getting a PS2 for that long).

When Nintendo ruled the gaming world during the SNES era, the only way anyone was going to catch them was for them to make a big mistake.

And they did by making the N64 a cartridge system so they could screw developers by charging them huge licensing fees. This pissed off developers and sent most third party games to the playstation.

Now Sony is the clear leader and in the same boat. They will be number 1 until they make a big mistake. As long as Sony keeps making quality consoles that are at least in the same league as the competitors, and keeps the killer third party exclusives like GTA and Final Fantasy tied up, nothing Nintendo or MS can do will let them catch up. All they're doing is fighting for 2nd place.

Interesting comments...but the way I see it as long as Playstation has the GTA series they will be number 1. Unless some other groundbreaking game comes along like 'The Getaway', Oh wait..
