Successful console add-ons?

I got to thinking today (as I normally do) about add-ons to consoles and was wondering if there were any successful ones. Add-ons that ended up becoming 'standard equipment' for the console. I had a hard time thinking of any.

Was the multiplayer tap really popular for the PSX and PS2? I don't think it was.

I wouldnt really consider any of those "add-ons", would you?

Is that what you mean, or do you mean stuff like 32X, SegaCD, 64DD, etc?

Yeah those are more peripherals imo akin to controllers, etc.

When I think addons, I think Sega CD, 32 X, etc. To my knowledge, none of those were successful.

I was thinking along the lines of add-ons that are designed to enhance 'gameplay' in some fashion, whether it be a memory or performance add-on for a console or a specialized controller.

I don't think it was successful, but there were some great Supercharger games on the Atari 2600.

The six button Sega Genesis controller was also popular.

As far as serious hardware add ons like CD players ect, I can't think of any that was popular.

This may be considered a peripheral.... The broadband adapter for the Dreamcast was successful in Japan. The US got screwed though.

I think if the expansion pack for the n64 as an addon and i think that was successful. Also the ram cart for the Saturn was sucessful in a way not huge here, but probably one of the most common things imported here, and it was bigger in japan.
