I got the sims, but I keep getting burned alive. AH!
I got the Sims today, and the first day of my first game, my Sim sets fire to the stove. I managed to extinguish it. The second day of my first game, he does it again, and dies a horrible death in the fire. I start over.
This time, I buy a phone. On the third day, my Sim sets fire to the stove. I call the FD. Four new fires are ablaze before the lone firman arrives and manages to put it all out only after my washing machine and stove are burned. About a week later, I get enough money to buy a new stove. He once again starts a fire, and gets burned alive. I restart.
This cycle continues for two more games. How do I train my Sim in cooking so that he stops burning himself alive?

Buy a bookshelf and teach your sim how to cook. I think just one level of cooking skill will prevent fires. You could also buy a smoke alarm but that's not really the best solution.

with no cooking, sims are VERY likely to start a fire (50% maybe)
with 1 bar of cooing, it's like 5-10 %. I don't think they ever do if it's over 1 bar. I ALWAYS give my sims cooking training before I even get a job. Even if you have 1 person do all the cooking, still train the others a little, just so the house doesn't burn.
Also, beware the grill. Very dangerous.

Well, After one day of playing, I am the CEO of a big software corporation making $1100 a day. I've been turned down four times when proposing, but continue to suck tongues with every female in the neighborhood. I was considering buying one of the add-ons today, but will they really enhance the game very much? They look like:
Vacation - lets you go on... vacation.
Hot Date - lets you go on... hot dates.
House Party - lets you hold... house parties.
Am I missing something there? Do they all add new jobs and items and people and such? Do any of them add OpenGL support (Livin Large added higher resolutions)?
I learned to cook then burned my house partially down by leaving a fire roaring wile at "work"...

They haven't added any new career tracks since "house party," which was the first expansion. Hopefully the next add-on will add a little more career depth to the game again.

The expansions add more to the game than you think. For example, Hot Date not only let's you go on Hot Dates but you also get:
-new downtown area
-new interactions
-each sim now has interests
-you can buy magazines downtown to change your interests
-you buy gifts downtown to give to other sims
-you can buy new outfits downtown
-new outfits
-new furniture and other items

I think Hot Date is the most worthwhile expansion. It's so funny watching your Sim try to go on a date. Watch as he trys to make his "moves" and get totally rejected. The best thing is when you ask them back to your place and they yell at you and leave.
