Favorite Video Game Sequels
Successful video games, like successful films, spawn several sequels. So what's your favorite?
I would have to say:
Ninja Gaiden II - Improved upon the first in every way: better graphics, story, and gameplay. That and Ryu Hayubasa is one of the coolest video game characters ever!
Mario 64 - For all of the obvious reasons that Miyamoto chose to bless us with.
Soul Reaver 2 - Despite the cliffhanger ending and the 'you can just run from a fight' battle engine, the atmosphere and story were pretty good.
Super Metroid - For the sole reason that it made me want to play all day and all night.
Metal Gear Solid - A story that was compelling, great characters that you cared for, and awesome boss battles. Too bad the sequel was nowhere as interactive as the first one proved to be.

Street fighter 2. I dont think anyone can disagree if you can remember how packed and how seriously people took this game in the early 90's. People took it to seriously that if they got *CHEESED* a possible fight would be immiment! Also remember how quarters were lined up just to get a game of this . And also the price of this game when it came out for SNES $74.99 and it was sold out like crazy also!

I always remember.. keep throws down to zero to none.
then again, good practice to be the best "fair" player.
then there was what came after, the glitched version where you can throw fireballs like crazy and everything. the game itself just started something huge. SF2 is one of the best games around, simple. it changed a game industry

Other than what's been mentioned I'll add
Resident Evil 2-Took the Resident Evil formula and cranked it up a notch. A great game.
Zelda:A Link To The Past-Recaptured all the spirit of the original Zelda unlike Adventure of Link.
Rouge Leader
Grand Theft Auto 3.

Thief 2: bad arse sequal, bad arse character, bad arse engine.
System shock 2: Awesome gameplay system. Also made by the guys that made Thief, hmmm coincedense? I think not!
Battlezone 2: Sleeper game that never got the props it deserved. For its time the best graphics and gameplay going. also cool cause its a build strat and a FPS all at the same time.
X-wing Collector Edition: it was like 4 games in 1!
Wing Commander 2 + SO1,2: Massive game. For 94 it was Supreeme!
Return to Zork: First time with graphics, one of the oddestly fun games of the good old days.
Heros of Might and Magic 2: It was just adictive when it first came out.
Diablo 2: It just was.
Super Metroid
Zelda Link to Past
Resedent Evil remake on Game Cube. SWEET HOODLY!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - More speed, awesome levels, one of the best two player modes ever.
Virtua Fighter 2 - Oh man, soo good. VF 1 was amazing, but VF2 basically perfected it.. Havent played VF4 yet, and never was amazed by VF3.
Mario 3 - The best 2d Mario sequel and my favorite Mario of them all.
Vectorman 2 - Loved the first Vectorman, and loved this one. Really maxed out the Genesis at the end of its lifespan.. I wish these Vectorman games got a 3d or 2d update in the next-generation!
NFL2k1 - Loved NFL2k, NFL2k1 was better and had online play, which was tons of fun.
Sonic & Knuckles - Continued the tried and true Sonic 2d formula, with some of my favorite levels in the series, as well as the lock-on feature, which turned the older Sonic 3 into an entirely new adventure, as well as made for some fun as playing Sonic 2 as knuckles.
HALO 2 - I hope this game will be on this list one day .

Some of my favorites include:
Wing Commander 2 and it's add on disk were great for their time good pick Brinstar.
Tie Fighter could be called a sequel since it's in the same universe as X-Wing. One of the best games I've ever played.
Doom 2 and Quake 2 and 3 just improved on each other as the technology got better.
Jedi Knight 2 really improved on Jedi Knight and Dark Forces with the force powers. Even though I almost exclusively used the lightsaber once I was able to use the force powers I never really missed or got bored by not using the guns. That is a great bit of game design IMO. I can't wait for the add on disc for this one.
GTA3...nuff said.

Virtua 4 tops 2 in gameplay, I never thought it could be done, but Sega outdid themselves. Plus the addition of Kumite mode, the best AI in a fighting game to date, and the ability to customize your character just puts it over the top.
One thing that can never be surpased by Virtua 4 is the soundtrack. Virtua 2 has the best soundtrack of the series, Virtua 4 doesn't even come close IMHO.

Didn't anyone play Metroid for the Gameboy? I thought that game was so insanely addictive on so many levels.
