Impressions of Super Mario Sunshine from Gamers.com

Very good and detailed. Plus they're by a huge fan of the Mario series, which is what I want as I'm more likely to agree with them.

It's hard to believe that new Mario game has been released (soon to be released here anyway). It seems there has been no hype build up for this, which is fine by me but it still seems strange. It feels like yesterday everyone was talking about how bland the textures were and how the images were only place holders.

I attribute that to the haters. waaa waa waaaa it looks like Mario 64..waa waaa looks like crap. Those people who remain to hate the game rather than appreciate it. Oddly enough these same people hate everything that other people like so gimme this game already!! at E3 it blew me away damn_it. And I know Im not looking at this game through rose colored glasses, this game is amazing.

People who think it looks just like Mario 64 graphically are on crack or, more likely, just Nintendo haters. I just fired it up and got the first 10 stars or so a little while ago, and it looks like crap compared to the screens and videos of Mario Sunshine.

Well to be fair josh, the guy at gamers.com called it Mario 64 on steriods.

Edit: Oops I read your message wrong, yeah it looks way better than Mario 64. Agreed.

Yep, it's definitely Mario 64 on steroids gameplay wise. I'd be dissapointed with anything else. Mario 64 was called the best game ever by many, and most platformer fans will agree that it's the best 3D platformer ever, so there was no need to tinker with it too much. Just add more awesome levels, a bunch of cool moves and it will become the new king of the 3D platformer genre. And it appears that this is exactly what they've done.

Thats it. I've made up my mind. I've been wanting a Cube since it came out but have resisted (I've still got Dreamcast games I haven't finished).

I'm getting this for my birthday. Can't wait.

What was with that dumb comment of Mario still being too kiddy? Does anyone expect anything else from Mario? Why does Mario have to grow up? Just shut up man, I play Mario for the gameplay, not to see up Peach's skirt. Mickey Mouse my ass, I never saw Mickey butt-stomp anyone. That's hardcore.

I don't get the complaints about it either. A realistic Mario game would be terrible. I wish the new Zelda game looked less childish and silly, but leave Mario alone.

"Unfortunately, whether you go for the new Mario formula or not, the game's ultimate drawback remains unchanged: it is undeniably aimed at children. "

The author is obviously narrow minded. I'm 33 years old, and can't wait for this game. It seems many people associate "fun" with being kiddie. If that's the case, sign me up as a kid.

Also, if he is narrow-minded, then I must be too.
No argument here.

I can't count the number of adults I know dying to play this game. Its a game for all ages, but its defintely not just a kids game. I'm tempted to import, but I will wait for the US release since I hate having to find a translation online for any dialog or text in the game. Its only a month wait so I can make it.

I also loved the line "ill fated N64" in the review. That ill fated console sure made Nintendo a lot of money.

The thing that's silly about it is that it's a Mario game. It's supposed to be cartoony. A more adult Mario game would be terrible. That's not what it's meant to be. If the reviewer is going to fault a Mario game for being too childish, he probably shouldn't be reviewing the game at all. There's nothing wrong with not liking that type or genre of games, but it's silly for a reviewer to criticize the genere rather than the game. Mario games are consistently the best games in their genre. I would never write a review for a wrestling game because I can't get over the fact that I think wrestling is retarded. This reviewer probably should have held off for the same reason.

That is like saying Dragon's Lair is too Cartoonish. Its a Mario game and that is how it is supposed to look. Does anyone honestly think a Mario game should have the same look as Eternal Darkness or some other more realistic looking game? The writer is dead wrong about this.

I don't get it when "adults" don't like something because it's "aimed at children." I don't know what the problem is. If it's fun, it's fun. If you can't appreciate the fun style of a game like mario, well that's your problem and I feel sorry for you. It is kind of similar to the Harry Potter books. Some people wouldn't give them a chance just because they're "adults" and can't enjoy something that is "aimed at children." Bah! Get over yourself.

People that can't get past cartoony graphics and thems are really missing out in my opinion as it has no real affect on gameplay and is a shallow reason to not play a game.

In some games, I suppose it could hurt with immersion into the game, but that's not an issue here.

Mario is a platformer. Platformers aren't story driven, so it's not like you're supposed to get immersed in the game so to speak. You're just supposed to have fun exploring the worlds, beating enemies, dodging obstacles, making tricky jumps etc.

On a related note, the first shipment sold out in Japan in about two hours. I haven't heard how big the initial shipment was, though.

Assumptions abound around here. Who said Mario wasn't fun? I'm sure it's quite fun for some people. Kids will adore this game. I'm sure some adults will relive their childhood 10 fold with this game.

It's just not as entertaining for me anymore. I'll have much more fun with games that are geared toward the adult user than I ever will with a revamped version of Mario 64.
That's exactly the point I was trying to make. Why do you need all of your games to have mature themes or boobs or blood or whatever you consider "geared to adults?" I just don't understand. Are you too sophisticated to play something simple and fun? And which games are geared to adults? An RTS or a few certain RPGs, maybe, but other than that all games can be equally enjoyed by a child or an adult. What qualifies a game to be an adult game? I personally think the only difference is in your head.

For me, that goes for all types of entertainment. For instance, I don't read Harry Potter books. I'm sure they are well-written and very entertaining, but they are geared toward children.

You haven't read the HP books but you assume that they are geared toward children? Yes assumptions must be fun.

The narrow-minded view that is being shown here is the idea that entertainmet comes in only two forms, entertainment for childeren and entertainment for adults. This is wrong and untrue. There is a form of entertainment that is designed for both adults and children and it is known as "family entertainment".

Something like Barney the Dinosaur is an example of children only entertainment. But other entertainment such as the HP books, Super Mario Sunshine, movies like Toy Story, Shrek, etc. are all examples of entertainment that is geared toward both adults and children.

But Mario Sunshine is not being made for the "adult only" gaming crowd. Mario Sunshine, just like all Mario games ever created, are made for the "family gaming audience". This is why the "kiddy" statement from the author doesn't make sense. It would be like ending a Grand Theft Auto review with the author saying something like:

"GTA is a great game and all, but the violent aesthetics will be a big drawback to the child and family gaming audience."
