Stuntman: An exercise in futility

I had originally writting a lengthy post about this game, but my internet connection was lost (fu**ing AOL ). Anyway, long story short, this game pissed me off. Scratch that, it REALLY, REALLY, REALLY pissed the hell out of me.

Anyone agree/disagree/indifferent? Discuss.

Does it suck, or is it just more challenging than you can handle?

PS: I haven't played it, but if I had a PS2 I would have it in an instant. I think I will rent it this weekend for my dad's PS2.

It's an interesting concept. I'm not so wild on the execution. Flat-out, it ain't a lot of fun. It's very hard and unforgiving. I get the idea it's supposed to be a stuntman simuatlor, but I think in real life stuntmen know what the entire stunt they are about to perform is before they hop into the car. I hate starting out, and then finding out what I'm supposed to do. An into with the stunt "storyboarded" would really have helped.
Don't even get me started on the load times. You can mess up at the very beginning of a stunt and then have to wait 30 seconds for the exact same scene to reload before starting over. Yuck.
Finally, I think they really missed an opportunity by not hiring a Peter O'Toole sound-alike to be the director. I might have been more inclined to try if I had a smooth "My dear boy.." in my ear coaxing me onto the next stunt
Difinately a rental. Go by BB this weekend; it's "Guarenteed to be in" and will almost certainly be out of stock. Then you'll get a free rental to try it later.

I love it, It is very very challenging, you like games that are easy to beat? I agree the downpoint is they should have went thru and told what the objectives are you have to do for each stunt. Like I said before it's from driver and driver 2 so expect time limits and precisie driving, as for the load time where are you guys getting the 30 seconds to load?
If i mess up i hit x twice and, I have been timing them, the longest load times I have experienced is 12 seconds and I am on the 5th movie

Heres my 2 cents:

I rented this and actually beat it before I had to return it - the greatest accomplishment of my life

This game feels more like a Beta than a final game to me. After I was done playing it, I felt I was supposed to report all problems and bugs to my superiors or something. Theres just to many things wrong with it.

First, having to blindly drive through every scene until you get it right is ridiculous. How about instead of showing the same movie logo every time a level loads, you show a map and over view of what to do?

Secondly, I noticed numerous bugs where I would try to drive around a corner and run into this imaginary wall that would stop me dead in my tracks. It seemed to be that the curb itself would stop me every once in a while.

Finally, if you do manage to beat the game and unlock everything, you basically have nothing to show for it. The Stunt Constructor is a joke that sounds good on paper but sucks in real life. Sure theres tons of cars and ramps to use, too bad you can only put out like 6 things before its full. If they are going to give you a huge arena to play with, at lease let us fill it with all these things we unlocked. The Driving Games are just as lame. They are all basically races against time, and if you win, yay my names on a list....woohoo.

In closing, this game is one of the most difiicult games I have every played. I cannot believe I didnt break anything while playing this. The loading times are a killer if you mess up, making you wait 20-30 seconds before trying again. I would think they could have made almost instant reloading of the level that you just played. So, if you think you would enjoy playing the same little driving segment over and over for hours with no idea of whats around the next bend, this game is for you.

My score - 4.7/10

There's a huge difference between a game being challenging and just plain frustrating. One makes you yell obscenities, then go back for one more go. The other makes you cast voodoo curses on the designers.

I tried to play this at my local EB but I couldn't stay there the full 45 minutes it would take to load each scene.

Any game that forces you to do something over and over sucks in my book.

Repeating stuff over and over is my number one pet peeve in video games.

According to the review in EGM, and elsewhere, the load times also suck, which is another of my pet peeves.

A game that forces you to do stuff over and over, with long load times in between -- no thanks.

Thanks for the warnings, I almost bought this game. Sounds like it should come with a free controller to replace the one you break playing it.

Games that create length by simply making you repeat the same thing over and over and over went out with the NES. I will pass on this game.

Yep, this game has to have one of the worst load times for a next gen game.

Xbox has a stuntman game coming out soon enough - maybe that one will be better. This one kinda sucks. I think the movie trailers you get to watch after you complete your three stunts for the movie are cool, but not quite worth the frustration. We're on the James Bond mission now - third stunt. Hopefully this is the last one.

The frustrating things are long load times, crappy controls (can't make use of the analog controlls? you slight the steering to the right and the wheel cranks full turn), annoying director's voice, real stuntwork is prepared better than that and the stunts don't daisy-chain like that unless it's a one-take-shot with one camera. "swerve right and overtake" end of scene. "jump the bridge" end of scene. not - "swerve right and overtake, jump the bridge, avoid the explosion, e-brake turn, launch rocket, jump over boxes, sideswipe truck, up the launchramp and into the helicopter"... it's stupid and not very fun. The graphics are crappy too - they looked like PS1 graphics. Also - the cut scenes with the stuntman talking about his next stunt... he sounds like he's been drugged and is about to pass out or sleep or something.

ya, i never finished that though, i got to the end a few times, but never good enough. I had to return the game and would never waste money renting it again. Theres absolutely no reason to play it, all the stunt arena stuff is useless, I was very disappointed.

This game should've been called "Stuntdriver" or "Piece of Crap" instead.

I think they should've done it like this:

You're an aspiring stuntman and you look at the want ads for movies looking for stuntmen. You gain experience and points for completing stunts and your score depends on how crazy the stunt looks and also that you complete the stunt. Each stunt is a single setup that would be followed by one camera - not something so elaborate like in Stuntman. In Stuntman, they have you do like 30 things and the action is only followed for 3 to 5 seconds at a time and could easily be pieced together from different takes... it's frustrating that the stupid second unit director makes you do the entire scene over again just cuz you mess up the end... anyway - in this game you do a small piece at a time instead and you won't know what the whole thing pieced together will look like until you do all the related stunts for the movie. As you gain points in your career, new movies will open up for you as they require a more experienced stuntman. Also - it shouldn't be all just driving... it should also have stunts where you pilot helicopters or motorcycles or jumping out of airplanes and skydiving or something... Most importantly, you get briefed and prepared for each stunt beforehand just like the professionals do. Anyway - I really hate this game. At least Xbox has one coming out that looks like it might be better...

Chase: Hollywood Stunts places players in the exciting world of Hollywood movie stunt car action. With four unique movie sets and a variety of vehicles unlike any other game, Chase promises heart-pounding action and spectacular movie-style special effects. My sentiments exactly. I stated in another thread that this was the first game I rented and returned on the same day. The concept is great, but there's more to a game than following directions. And that's not even including t...........h.............e...............................l............o...........a...........d.... ............................................t..........i..........................m................. ......es.

I still don't see where you guys get the long load times. The only time they are long is when you complete a stunt and it starts a new one, when u mess up and have to start over it takes 8-10 seconds to redo the stunt.
Btw the stunt arena is awsome! that is if you wanna put in the time to get 90 to 100% on each stunt you get all kinds of cars, jumps and stuff.

8-10 seconds is still too long, and they are terrible in between stunts as you said.
