Need help identifying Nintendo game

I had this shooter game on the NES when I was a kid that i loved. I got it for christmas in 89. It was like a updated galaga in space. There were weapon upgrades that came in little bubbles (like in contra) that you would shot to change to a spread or double shot. I'm sorry I can't give more details thats all I remember.

it wasn't a side scroller like gradius. It was a top view thing

Hmmm... got a couple of ideas:

Star Soldier?
To the Earth?

I think it might be Star Soldier, but I might be getting the name wrong. To the earth used the zapper, so I doubt that's it.

Also, S.C.A.T. and Section Z were a lot like Contra in Space, but I don't think that's exactly what you were talking about.

Star Soldier

Lifeforce did have some overhead parts, as seen above^

Hope this helps!

but that was the best part

i do you remember it being hard as crap though. It appealed to me because there was so much stuff to shoot, all the bonus and whatnot.
me and my hyperactive ways worked well with that game.
