Frustrating games

So I'm playing Resident Evil Code Veronica and at first I got stuck at a point where I was well into the game and had only one save file. Basically, I had to restart the game. No big deal as I played and finished the GC Resident Evil in between. Anyhow, I resumed playing and got past that part. I'm now in a similar situation I think, despite having 3 save files at different points in the game. This got me thinking, what are games you would consider extremely frustrating? RE Code Veronica is way up there for me, as is Rogue Leader. I really want to like both games but they just piss me off so much that I just want to get rid of them and never play them again. Yet I keep coming back to try. Any games that do the same for you?

Leatherballs 06-12-02 03:57 PM

The old Nintendo Mega Man games. I was playing these the other day, and after dying in the middle of a level and having to start over, I would completely lose interest. I loved the games as a kid, and still do, but I certainly don't remember them being as difficult and frustrating as I find them now. Maybe as a child, I was just a gaming god...who knows...

squidget 06-12-02 05:47 PM

Kid Cubicle drove me nuts when I was a kid. I was determained to beat it though

whontime 06-12-02 05:51 PM

For me it was MDK2 on dreamcast, man that game was difficult to me.

Do you mean Kickle Cubicle? That game was a blast. Tough but fun.

mustaine 06-12-02 07:05 PM

wanna talk about frustrating, how about Gyruss and Ghosts and Goblins for the NES. To this day i still have never beaten either.

Freakin' Mega Man. I can't remember if it was on a Genesis or NES, but I played that game with a friend and we used a GameShark. It was so freakin' hard, even with the GameShark! I have no idea how anyone could have the patience to get through it without cheating.

KnightLerxst 06-12-02 07:29 PM

The original Ninja Gaiden for NES...good god was that game hard...I think I made it to leve 6-3 once...I never got to the final boss...

I absolutely agree with Ghosts and Goblins. I would also add to this list Super Monkey Ball on the GC and Rogue Leader (GC). SMB had me almost breaking the little disc over my knee.

Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding for Xbox. For the love of God. That game once drove me to tears.

Aghama 06-12-02 11:21 PM

Blaster Master. Curse thy crappy weapon system, where taking one point of damage can cause you to backtrack for 10 minutes to get recharged. And thy bosses that take hundreds of hits to destroy. And thy lame ass excuse for a plot.

silentbob007 06-12-02 11:38 PM

Bionic Commando for NES, where you were screwed and had to start the entire game over if you took the wrong weapon into a level.

 How far have you gotten?

Hey Aghama, Blaster Master was the shieeet back in its day! Difficult as it was. :)

No kidding - stupid jumping back and forth between walls! There was a Batman game for the NES that required something similar - never finished it.

I still have my copy laying around, great game.

My biggest NES frustration though was 'Legacy of the Wizard'. I could get through the wo or so areas (areas were themed by family members), but could not get the rest of the way. Used Game Genie to cheat and beat it.

There have been many others that had parts that made me freaking mad, but nothing sticks like Legacy.

I still have Legacy. I never could beat all the levels. I too had to use the Game Genie.

I thought Shingen the Ruler was too hard. I could never train enough army. I'd always get attacked and die.

Actually, there was a way around that. I think if you pressed Select and Start at the same time, it would take you out of the current level and back to the map.

Caoimhin 06-13-02 07:40 AM

Hey, I never beat Super Mario Bros. for the NES. Most platformers are frustrating to me, though. My sense of timing and judging distances, especially when you have like 43 different jump styles, tend to make me look like a rube next to most 5-year-olds.

spankyj 06-13-02 09:20 AM

I'm currently pissed at Virtua Tennis for Dreamcast. I'm working on beating all the games in my collection, but Henman and Courier are really screwing me over in this quest. I get so fired up, my wife looks at me like I'm crazy when I'm talking trash to the computer.

Damn! That's what I get for playing a rental game with no manual at the age of 6! :)

I always thought the original Contra for NES was impossible if you didn't cheat and use the Konami code for extra lives...

Not impossible. Very difficult, but not impossible.

I have beaten most of the games you guys have talked about. Bionic Commando was a difficult game, but even today I can go back and beat the game with no problem.

For those complaining about Ninja Gaiden's difficulty, you should really try the hardest one in the series...Ninja Gaiden III. The original is hard, but the last one will make you throw your controller at the TV.

The original Mega Man was very difficult. It took me a long time to beat that game, but I eventually did. I doubt I could go back and do it again, it was just so hard. Every Mega Man got easy after the first one. I still say Mega Man 2 was the best game in the series.

Blaster Master was also a difficult game, but not as hard as the ones talked about before...or at least I don't remember it being difficult. I remember beating the game though. I loved Blaster Master.

Ghosts and Goblins, Ghouls 'n Ghosts and all the games in that genre are easily some of the most difficult games ever. Even Maximo on PS2 was difficult. These games were not easy because there was truly no set way you could go through the levels. Enemies would come randomly and not in a set pattern. Basically you were handcuffed before you ever began to play the game. I beat Ghouls 'n Ghosts, but I do not remember beating Ghosts and Goblins...cannot wait for the former to be resold on GBA.

I wish to add Dracula X to the list. Granted, it came out for the PC Engine and was a superb game, but it was damn hard!

I'm sure there have been other frustrating games, but I can't think of any at the moment...just wanted to touch on some that were already said.

Cardiff Giant11 06-13-02 11:44 AM

Just thought of another one. Last Battle for the Genesis. The only way I was able to get past the first or second level was by using a game genie.

MrKen 06-13-02 11:46 AM

Super Monkey Ball and Rouge Leader for the GC have me ready to throw my controller across the room after about 15 minutes most days.

Ghosts and Goblins was tough, and I remember dying a whole lot in Rygar as well.

Absolute ridiculously hard game I've played is on PC- X-com Terror from the deep. UFO defense (the first one) was tough, but the Terror from the Deep was like, un-fricken-believable sometimes.

Breakfast with Girls 06-13-02 11:59 AM

Castlevania
Zelda II: Link's Adventure

Both were nightmares towards the end.

Really? I found TFTD very fun and ominous. Those night levels were nasty, though!

Kudama 06-13-02 12:16 PM

If Resident Evil CV is tougher than RE Nemesis, then I'm screwed. I hate when you've used up everything to beat that monster and he pops out ten minutes later before you've even found any handgun rounds!
Ghost Recon is chapping my hide too. I think I've only ever actually seen the guys who are killing me once and I can't even get past the first mission.

Why do I like games so much when I'm sooo bad at them?

I was ranked in the 40s before I traded my Xbox. Damn that game. Oh, but I will be getting it back this summer... oh yes.

BigDave 06-13-02 12:26 PM

Pong. Now that was one b*tch of a game!

Well, Bionic Commando was a snap, I have video evidence of beaing Ninja Gaiden, and I once finished Contra without dying/continuing (I don't remember which, but I was damn_proud of myself at the time). But I never got past the level 7 boss in Blaster Master without cheating, because it took hours to get to him and I could never get the grenade trick to work. It was a great game, but it could have used a couple more continues for us youngin's.

Trigger 06-13-02 12:39 PM

Wasn't there a game called Mr. Blasto or Captain Blasto or something? It was seriously annoying and frustrating

I'm pretty sure it was no continues, because I'm pretty sure that if someone were to beat that game without dying once, the world would explode and space-time would collapse. Still, that's quite an achievement!

Its actually not too hard if you can avoid picking up weapons that aren't spread or rapid fire. I occasionally get a fluke death from level 4 or level 6, but other than that, the game is pretty easy for me when I have spread the whole time.

rabbit77 06-13-02 03:53 PM

Beating some of the hardest levels on Return Fire on the Playstation was just damn_impossible. Actually I think there was a level on there called "The Impossible Dream." Man, that was a fun game.

Yeah, I think it was w/o dying, but only once. I played the hell out of that game; funny thing is, I don't think I actually owned, so I have no idea how I had it to play.

Oh, I found it fun alright. It is one of the best games/series I've ever played. It's just hard. Really really hard. Especially up to the point where I decided saving and reloading wasn't cheating.
:)

Do you mean Blasto for the PSX? It was a pseudo 3d platformer with a red space dude voiced by Phil Hartman. Pretty funny game, though annoying as well.

Gallant Pig 06-13-02 04:54 PM

Ninja Gaiden arcade was tough as nails.

Man, I could beat that game in under 15 min. without losing a life.

Gallant Pig 06-13-02 08:17 PM

Does anyone remember getting to the end of Ikari Warrios (NES version) and just sitting there forever and shooting and shooting that wall and never getting passed it? Then the missiles start coming but you still can't get anyway?
