Broke down... bought the XBOX. Need advice!

Well, I was a next-gen holdout for a loooong time..

Been playing my dreamcast, virtual boy, game boy advance and saturn for a while now.. but with the e3 news of so many sega games coming out for xbox, and the amazing XBOX Live setup,I broke down and bought an XBOX tonight.

So I got the system and 1 controller.. no games, no nothing.. what do i NEED to get, and what do you guys recommend I get?

I basically want 1 or 2 great games to hold me over til Crazy Taxi 3, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Soccer Slam, etc..

I love SEGA, but am not that interested in JSRF or Gun Valkyrie I don't think.. I liked JGR, but didnt love it enough to splurge $50 on the sequel with my pockets being empty.

Thanks for any advice! And I hope XBOX does good, as it truly is an awesome system technically.

Congrats on your purchase.

Everyone is going to tell you to buy Halo. That's a given for any new XBox owner.

You will get your money's worth if you start out on the Heroic level of difficulty or higher. It took me 36 hours to beat the single player game. I play multiplayer all the time at Halo parties or over the net on Gamespy.

Once you get money in your pockets, get JSRF. If you liked the first one, you will probably end up loving the second one, it's a lot different in a good way.

But listen to the oh-so-wise Flay and get Halo right off the bat.

Here's a trick: buy it at half.com. Great deals there. In fact I saw JSRF there for $32 the other day, couple that with a $5 newby coupon and you could pick it up for under $30 after shipping.

Have fun! Is YujiNaka your middle name? It's not as Irish as O'Sullivan, or is it?

Not my middle name

Just a huge fan of Yuji Naka's work with Sonic Team.
(Burning Rangers, NiGHTS, all the Sonic's, PSO, etc)..

Anyone know when PSO for XBOX is coming out? This Fall? Seems like tons of the XBOX games I am looking forward to dont come out til Fall 02

Looks like I'll be picking up Halo, DVD kit soon.

Yeah PSO this fall I think.

Yojimbo check this out: http://half.ebay.com/browse/browse.cfm?tag=gm_xbox great bargains can be found there. In fact, I just picked up NFL Fever for $17 (going to brush up on the game to prepare for the online version coming out).

Don't forget to use one of Geoff's $5 off coupons if you've never bought from there before.

In addition to Halo, I'd recommend Rallisport, DOA3, Max Payne and Knockout Kings.

Especially DOA3 if you can get nude strippers to play with you.

Other Xbox games have come and gone but Halo is the one that sits inside my Xbox the most.

From the looks of the PC version (and assuming you enjoy RPGs), I would recommend looking into Morrowind later this month/early next.

If you want fighting get DOA3. Another good one is Bloodwake. I just got Hunter the Reckoning. That game is cool as hell.

You want games with lots of replayability. My suggestions would be:

HALO great shooter and the "must have" for XBOX

Project Gotham Racing - If you like racing games, this one is fun to play and hard to master with a unique scoring system. More than just being the fastest car, you also have to drive with style.

Tony Hawk 3 - Personally, I love this game and can play it over and over. Another game that fun to play but hard to master. I had only played this series a little bit, then 3 came out and I fell madly in love.

AMPED - along the same lines as Tony Hawk 3, this one is fun but I would take the other ones over this

It all depends on what kind of games you like: Shooter, Race, Action/Sports.

Good Luck!

Well, I did my splurging on XBOX stuff today.

Thanks for all the great advice!

I first went and hit KB for their 50% off sale.
The sign said 50% off all accessories, but there were no XBOX stuff in sight. I asked and the lady said it was on the other side, and they had 1 1st party controller left and 1 memory pack. I asked if it was 50% off, and the older lady, the manager, said "NO. ONLY THESE ITEMS".. we got into it for a while, with me asking how a sign that said "all accessories 50% off" could possibly exclude some accessories.. we finally decided to just ring it up, and it came up $19.99 and she as pissed as all hell.

So $19.99 for controller, $14.99 for memory pack. Not bad.

Then went to EB also in the mall. Had a hell of a time deciding what games to get. Finally settled on the one everybodies been recommending.. HALO. $50 there, and a used oddworld: munch's odyseey for $22.50 since there is a 10% off sale on used games.

Then to Best Buy, and got a DVD Kit for like $30. Was hoping to find one of these at KB. Used it today to watch some Zoolander (so bad but so good) and it was really good picture, and really quiet... much better than my crappy Samsung DVD player.

Anyways, very pleased so far! Played there some HALO and am really addicted!! What a great game, didnt think I'd like it, but I can see what all the fuss was about! Really hope for Halo 2 sometime in the future. Oddworld I hvae only played like 1 level, and its so far been mostly training, but its been decently fun, will have to reserve judgement.

Anyways, cant wait for some NFL2k3 and Crazy Taxi 3 this summer.

Thanks again for your help
-Jim

bah

...take the Xbox, put it back in the box...and return it for a GC.

Just kidding. Get Halo, its a great game. But if you get it, your gonna want 3 more controllers cause its only really fun multiplayer. Thats the only XBox game I support, so definitely get it and wait for some other good games to come out.

YujiNaka, you do know that the XBox has a hard drive with a heck of a lot more space than a memory card and you can save games to it, right? I'm assuming you got the memory card to transfer data to another system.

Anyway, I strongly prefer the Controller S over the standard one. I traded in the one that came with the system for $20 off the price of the S at Electronics Boutique. If you don't like the controller, look into that. I think it may be the best controller I've ever used.

Looking into getting a Controller S for a 3rd controller... but I really like the original XBOX controller anyways... the first controller that doesnt really make my hand cramp (big american hands, yes!!)

yah, I bought the memory pak figuring I'd need one, one day, to transfer files to a friends xbox.. no real need for it now, as I only have 1 friend with an XBOX in the immediate viscinity, but a few guys in my frat have xbox's, so maybe during the school year... any advantage to transfering your HALO character into a multiplayer game?

Will look into the cheap games at TARGET today, I have played Munch's Oddyseey and HALO to death the last couple days.. Am on level 9 in Oddworld and it is getting better every level, the first few were kind of boring, but they were just training I suppose.. Getting pretty good now. Am having problems on HALO level 2, as oyu can tell, I aint a real good FPS player, not very experienced... but I am having a bit too easy of a tim eon easy, but too hard of a tiem on Normal,.... how does everyone kill the swarms of bad guys when you are in the hills? I realized that zooming in with the pistol was alot better than running in with the rifle plasting...

Really interested in Ralisport, as I looked at the trailer at www.xbox.com and it looks awesome, Sega rally-ish. Also very interested in DOA3 and its booster disc (just subscribed to OXM last night), and JSRF/Gun Valkyrie.. Anyone have Gunvalkyrie and can give their insights? Is it similar to Panzer Dragoon/Burning Rangers?

thanks
-Jim

Well, It's easiest to attack them head on. That's better than letting them storm your postion with the civilians. Make sure you put your grenades to good use.

Also, have fun driving the Warthog.
