After reading EGM's article on the PS2's first online game, it got me pretty hyped up. The whole teamwork aspect of the game, coupled with the use of the headset and realistic game physics make this game look worthwhile. Anyone else interested in this game as well? Unfortunately, it will only support those of us with broadband, thus alienating more than 50% of the PS2 owners in the U.S. who only have narrowband.
Perhaps some of you here would like to organize a little Video Game Talk SOCOM battle when this game comes out?

The EGM article actually killed my interest in the game. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it will be great for those into these type of games, but after reading the article I could tell it wasn't my kind of thing. I've never liked the "strategy based shooters" like Rainbow Six and what not, and this just seems to be an extremely advanced version of that with voice recognition to control your team, or communicate with other gamers online. I'm not into online gaming either, and won't have broadband anytime soon (this is broadband only), so that's another strike against the game as well.
Shame too, I thought this might be a game (along with GT3, MGS2, Maximo and Devil May Cry) to convince me to get a PS2 if the price drops to $199.

The one thing I'm concerned about is price. $40 for the modem, $60 for the game. That's $100 to play SOCOM online. Yikes.
But as far as the game technology goes, I'm hyped. Communication and AI is so important in these types of tactical games. Being able to tell my computer AI buddies to move to certain points (and even how to move to those certain points) w/ the voice headset would really blow my mind. The voice communications would also add another dimension of realism that hasn't been explored in any other tactical game so far.
I'm very interested, with reservations. I think I'll wait on a full review before deciding to plunk down any money.

I was bummed to see you can't use a keyboard and mouse with it. Not sure I fully agree with there assertion it creates an "unfair" advantage. Not sure how good the analog sticks will be for moving around the aim.

I am not an online gamer although i do admit to being a bit interested in playing this just to see what it is like. maybe i can play it at E3 to get a better idea of what the finished product will be like.
I would love to see them bundle the modem into the game for a better price than buying them seperately

Keep in mind that the controls will be designed and optimized for the Dual shock and not a keyboard mouse, so it should work fine. Console games have to be designed to appeal first to console game fans who are used to control pads, rather than catering to PC gamers who also play console games. I for one hope keyboard mouse controls never become common on consoles as I hate them and gaming on the PC in general.

It'll be fun online if you find a core group of people who are mature enough to actually play the game and not just try and be idiots. Unfortunately I imagine most people will be idiots and too much of that will turn me off quickly. I hope in the solo game that you don't HAVE to shout orders into that silly microphone, sure it's a neat feature but I'd feel like a fool.

I felt like you did until i bought the belkin n50 speedpad. You should check it out. The claw is also another good fps controller from what i read.

I actually saw that speedpad in an EB and was thinking of getting it, but I'm not sure if I would still like it. Are there any computer controllers with dual analog sticks like the XBOX controller?

I played SOCOM in the PS2 on-line beta test and I HATED IT.
It was A LOT of waiting. I would join a game after waiting, play a bit. Get killed (you get 1 life) and then WAIT AGAIN while the round finished (up to 5-10 minutes) and then restart again.
All in all it was not enough to keep me glued. Now I did not have a headset, so I don't know what the group work aspect of the game would play like (it was a barebones beta, but did have chat, but I had no keyboard). While I am sure the final experience will be improved, I saw nothing in the game that sparked my interest.
...Now Twisted Metal: Black On-line, that was quite fun and will for me be the "killer on-line app".

I suppose it depends on what type of games you prefer. It's been stated before that SOCOM strays from the fast-paced action found in games like Halo. Well, different strokes for different folks.

Walmart has this game for $50. I thought that the game was suppost to be $60, and I have seen it preordered for $60 at many places. Is this a deal?

SOCOM looks really good
I was watching a behind the scenes type feature on an OPM disc(the one from the spiderman cover issue) and SOCOM US Navy Seals looks pretty cool. The gameplay looks very realistic and the enviornment s are very nice. The voice command is interesting as in multiplayer it'll be for voice chat. Not sure how I feel about that as I don't wan some 12 year old cursing at me because I picked him off but it's still a very interesting concept. Thank God I've got broadband

Merged threads.
If you like tactical FPS, try SWAT 3 and any of the Rainbow 6 series on the PC. I played R6 first, but I preferred SWAT 3 because of the police perspective and the on-the-fly mission planning.

Count me in on a SOCOM game guys. It sounds pretty friggin awsome. Any word on what type of sound this will have? I don't want to get a discussion going on how important it is to have DD5.1 in game but I would like to see it here. If they do that I would be forced to hook my ps2 back up to one of my coveted digital audio ports on my receiver.

I can't wait for this game, it looks like it'll be a lot of fun.
