Pretty underwhelming scores but I'll still pick it up. |

If you don't like them don't click on the threads. It's not like this forum gets tons of new threads each day. It's easy to not click on the ones that don't interest you. |
My point is, is this something that regularly occurs? I started posting on these boards in Jan, so I missed all the hype over the games and systems released in September. Is this a normal thing? Are we going to see this kind of post for all the upcoming great games? I honesty clicked on this post because I thought someone on this board had gotten the game and had done a review, rather than quotes of reviews from popular video game sites. I would think these reviews would be easy enough to find with out any help, but I guess not.

1. Yes it's a regular thing. It will happen with most big releases as it happened all the time last fall. It's just been a slow period for releases.
2. Some people probably get most of their news from this forum, so that's one reason for posting them. Secondly, I think it's good to post them because the reviews can be discussed. 3. When the game is out, members should post their reviews here, rather than in a new thread, so it will serve that purpose in a couple days. |

Alright, so I couldn't wait to get the game. I picked it up today. Its the first time I have played a game in the Resident Evil series so I don't have much to compare it to. I can say this though, it is the best looking game I have played on the Cube so far. The graphics are amazing. The movies are awesome. I'm not finding it scarey so far, but I am also a big horror movie fan so it takes a lot to creep me out. The one thing I'm having a hard time getting use to is just walking. The controls seem a little strange to me and the players seem to move a little slower than I expected. Probably just me. I don't regret paying the extra $10 so far to get it today.

Originally posted by joshd2012 Try Silent Hill 1 or 2 (personally, I think 1 is scarier). The RE series is more jump-out horror, while Silent Hill is more atmostphere horror. Playing Silent Hill with surround sound loud and the lights off was an experience I will never forget. |

Has anyone read, heard anything about, or played at a Cube Club and can report, "Eternal Darkness" control scheme? I'm used to the RE style control, but I owned RE2 on the N64, and the "Mario 64 style" control was perfect, and didn't detract from the horror factor at all. I hope ED doesn't use RE controls...

I believe Eternal Darkness will have Mario 64 type controls (the backgrounds aren't pre-rendered like in Resident Evil, so there's no reason to do it any other way).

Originally posted by IIG Has anyone read, heard anything about, or played at a Cube Club and can report, "Eternal Darkness" control scheme The developers have said several times that ED is "not Resident Evil" and even not survival horror. It's more of an action adventure game in a horror type setting with a sanity meter. It looks awesome regardless. |
Resident Evil scares you with surprises and graphics.
Eternal Darkness, doesn't so much "scare" you as it plays with your mind and warps your understanding of whats going on. In the game, and with the story line. |
Picked this up yesterday and played it a bit. I’m very impressed (my previous experience with these games has been limited to demos of the PC versions).
The game is very immersive…especially if you make your play area free of distractions (lights off, etc). The graphics are so good that they pull you in. It’s fun because you want to keep exploring the mansion, but yet you’re scared of what’s around each corner. Lots of cheap thrills (windows breaking, sudden lightning flashes) really keep you on your toes. I’m amazed at how well the lighting works…the polygonal characters blend amazingly well with the pre-rendered backgrounds. So far, the puzzles are intuitive and engaging. The map/item/file screens are easy to navigate and understand. The cons of the game are minor, and are pretty much the same as has been mentioned for all the other games in the series. There’s still a bit of “Engrish” in the translations…doesn’t Capcom have any native English speakers working for them? They could have had a 10-year old proofread the game’s text and had a vast improvement. The controls are awkward, although I’m adjusting…I just need to remember to raise my weapon before firing (D’OH!). It’s annoying when there’s a zombie attacking that my character can easily see…but I can’t. The inventory system is quite frustrating…I was very happy when I found my first item box. The save system is inane…it’s bad enough that you have to find “save points,” but to tie it to a limited number of typewriter ribbons is just too much. If you haven’t been playing for long and need to stop, it’s a tough decision: do I waste a ribbon or do I go back through everything again next time I play? Speaking of the save system, I can see why they included a free memory card for this game in Japan. Each save uses up 8 blocks, and in a game like this you want to have “back-up” saves in case you paint yourself into a corner and need to backtrack a bit. Can’t wait for the 251 card to come out next month. I recommend the game unless you’ve played and hated the earlier entries in the series…the flaws from those games are carried forward here. To newcomers, I suggest that you approach this as an item management game first and foremost. You really need to think carefully about what you pick up, and how you use it. Once I put that philosophy at the forefront of my mind, the game became a lot more enjoyable and less frustrating. |
This game is sweet!
One thing I wish I had figured out sooner... minor item spoilers below Spoiler:

Okay, got ahold of the game. Here's my thoughts:
Overall its a good game. Most everything has been mentioned about its graphics and gameplay elements. Should be a great time. I do not however think this game is that "mind blowing" it looks good, but it's not that good... I mean, its 2d backrounds... But it does look good, don't misunderstand mind, I just think there may be a little to much hype on the graphics. This game, plus SMW for GBA will keep me busy. Right now I'm happy with the purchase I would say it's worth the 40 I payed. |
I finally got around to playing this tonight, and was blown away. The graphics are great, phenomenal detail. Great lighting and shadows, great reflections in mirrors and windows, little things like moths around and outdoor light. Simply amazing.
It's also much scarier than I remember. The music is unnerving, and mansion just seems creepier (especially a couple new areas I've wandered into so far.) It seems pretty hard, even on the easier difficulty zombies take several pistol shots to "die." I'll have to go back through a good bit of crap when I play again as I got killed without saving for a while. Not really frustating as I don't mind going through some of those zombies again. Simply awesome. Unless you hated the previous RE games, you should definitely pick this up. |
Does everyone's games have the "skipping" that occurs during action sequences? Not during the gameplay, but during the cinematic stuff. For example when Barry first bust through the door to the dining room, it looks sort of choppy. Is that on purpose? Or is yours smooth? Mine only does this during scenes like I described. regular gameplay and prerended movies are fine. can anyway verify or explain this?
Thanks. |
Mine does the same thing. I do not think there is anything wrong. The game is amazing.

It's not just you, Jeff. It's a known issue with the game and has been mentioned in the reviews as well. It only occurs with the cinematics that use the game engine (as opposed to the FMV), when the angles change. I'm guessing it has something to do with the audio track.
It's a minor inconvenience, to be sure, but it would be nice to have this fixed for Resident Evil 0 which uses the same engine. I love engine-driven cinematics, as they really help keep you in the game and feel less like you are watching a movie. That said, even the FMV in Resident Evil blends very very well with the gameplay. |
I finally got a hold of this game, it's awesome!! Yeah groucho is right, it happens when the camera or scene switches ingame, after awhile though its hardly noticeable though, the outdoor scenes are beautiful!
I forgot how to play this kind of game, its harder than most games (which is a good thing! :)), I'm thinking of starting over, I ran out of bullets so I'm using a knife, I have red health with no healing items, and there are about 4 crimson heads running around waiting to chop off my head. They weren't kidding when they said the zombies come back and can move faster, these guys are wild beasts!! I don't want to start over because I'm pretty far...well I'll keep trying hopefully I'll find some items that'll help me out :D. |
