Gauntlet Dark Legacy (Xbox) Reviews Wanted
Anyone pick this up? I remember playing it on Sega...about 12 years ago. Just wanted to know how it plays, looks, etc.

I have this on Gamecube. From what I understand, the Xbox version will not differ greatly from the PS2 or Cube versions, so the reviews for those will give you a good idea on what to expect.
The game is fun, but not great. It's just like playing the old coin-op game but in 3D environments. It's quite repetitive but can be fun if you are playing with friends (I've never even bothered with the single player). It's basically a lite multiplayer co-op hack and slash.
The graphics are really sub-par. Better than the N64 game with the same engine (Gauntlet Legends...where everything was so blurry the game was virtually unplayable) but not even Dreamcast quality. They weren't upgraded from PS2 to GCN, and I don't believe they're being upgraded for the Xbox. It's too bad, because some of the levels could have looked pretty cool with higher polygon counts and better textures.
Final verdict: buy it only if you will use the multiplayer. It's a nice "mindless" party game.

I bought this for Xbox today. Played for about 2 hours on 2 player co-op mode with a friend. The graphics are unimpressive. The sound is probably the worst I have heard from a game in a long time. The music and sound effects sound like they've been compressed until they couldn't be compressed any more. I can understand this from a coin-op standpoint where storage is limited, but it's really unacceptable on DVD media. Really bad. A lot of the levels are repeats from Gauntlet Legends with a few minor additions.
Still, I think I will keep this game. Why? Well it's still mindless hack n slash fun, and the prospect of playing 4 players seems nice. It's not something that'll keep my attention for hours on end, but I think it's the type of game I'll play every once in a while for a hour or so at a time. Plus it's one of the few multiplayer co-op non-split-screen games out there.
Overall: I'm really disappointed that the developers did nothing at all to take advantage of the Xbox hardware. But it's still Gauntlet, and can be fun to play for small stretches at a time with friends. If you don't play games with friends (ie you plan on playing single player only), I strongly discourage you from buying or even renting this game. It's really only fun with a group of friends.
One last note: it's a better 4 player game than Fuzion Frenzy. I don't know why I haven't traded that awful game in yet.

I just got it for Gamecube because I spent way too much money playing Gauntlet Legends in the arcade. Dark Legacy isn't changed much, but it offers mindless entertainment. I easily blew a couple hours playing last night trying to figure out some of the levels, searching for hidden walls, etc.
It's nothing special, but if you like the arcade version, you should like the console version. The only real downside from the arcade version I noticed is that it's almost impossible to die. I'm a low-level character, but have something like 1700 HP - If I go up against a very hard guy, I might lose 200 max. There's really no way to die - and it's not very challenging. I am always maxed on life, magic and keys.
But still, if you like the arcade version, you should like the console version. Play it there before buying it.

Ok I need to add some more comments about Gauntlet for Xbox now that I've had a chance to play it more.
The game is buggy.
One exacmple: After you start accumulating power-ups, the inventory system for those power-ups starts to screw up. Basically the way it's supposed to work is that you open the inventory with a button, then scroll through it, and toggle the power-up on/off with another button. Then close inventory. The inventory items are displayed by text only, and after you've accumulated a number of them, some of the names will not show up at all, even though it is selected. The only way to tell what it is is to activate the power-up. Restarting the Xbox and game does not make this bug go away. You're stuck with it. This comes up after just a few hours of play and is really unforgivable. Did they even playtest this game?
Another bug: after playing for a couple hours straight, the animating textures in the game (and there are a lot of them), start to display wrong textures entirely. This makes it impossible to determine what is what and forces you to reboot the Xbox, which fortunately resolves the problem. At least until it happens again.
It makes me angry that Midway would release such a sub-par product on the Xbox. They also screwed up the Spyhunter port. I think they're probably my least-favorite game company right now. Maybe they'll release a patch. haha.

We have the same problem with the inventory on the GC - I thought I just wasn't using it right for a while - since I really never used items anyways, but when I would get something, it would never show up, so I have no idea what to do..
Also, the voices are screwed up at times. I had gotten a couple level ups in one level and was a level 11 archer. I exit the level and this big booming voice proclaims "Blue Archer is now a level 10 Something" (something was a step up from archer) - when I was clearly level 11.
It's a truly buggy game with defects all around, but hey, it's still fun to play.

I've had the game for the PS2 for a few months.
Two of us are working through the game, but only get to play on Saturday afternoons, so it's taking a while.
My biggest complaint is the Runestones. We've had it through all 8 worlds, but didn't find enough Runestones, so now we have to replay old levels and try to find ones we missed. It's incredibly frustrating.

Found another bug for the Xbox version. Once again it happens after you play for a while. If you go to the character select screen to change your character, some of the portraits for the characters will not show up. If you try to select that portrait and return to the game, the game will freeze and crash. Rebooting the Xbox will make the problem go away, but it'll come up again after you play for a while again.
I think it's pretty obvious now that the cause of the problems I've experienced are a result of memory leaks. Really sloppy job by those Midway programmers.

Question for ya regarding the game. I just finished the mountain levels (except for the dragon) and I have 11 of 12 golden snake fangs or whatever they are. But I need 12 of 12 to open the west wing. Do I now have to go back through every friggen level to find one golden snake fang?? That seems quite retarded to me - at least they could tell me which level it's in...

The snake fangs aren't like the runestones...they respawn each time you play a level. So play through any level that has a gargoyle in it and you'll get your fang.

For those of you having problems with the inventory, I seem to have found a way to effectively use it.
The problem I was having is that if I opened up the item listing, there would only be a couple options that came up as I used the right and left arrows to scroll through them - the rest would just be blank. What I found, is that if you hit the up (select item) button on a blank spot, it tells you what the item is - and then you can just push down (de-select item) and you don't use it. You can do that for all the blank spots, and then for the rest of the game, you can scroll through all your items.
This fixed what I thought was the biggest problem with the game, so I'm much happier with it now.
