Rant: Funcoland ... Do people really pay these prices!?!

So i go into funcoland today, and ask them where their old school gameboy carts were. She points me to this case, and i see 14.99, 19.99, 24.99 .... USED!!! Some of these games are over ten years old and they're charging -what i consider- huge amounts for them...USED! ... In the GBA area, i saw Advance-Wars and asked how much... Used: 34.99 .... 34.99!!! That's the cost for it NEW right next door at target, and they're selling it used for that.

I just wanted to blow off some steam. Anyone else hate this place?

Gallant Pig 03-19-02 11:01 PM

Funcoland sucks hard.

victant 03-19-02 11:15 PM

:crap:

Someone must be paying those prices, since they believe people will buy them....

TaTTooD 03-19-02 11:31 PM

i thought Funcoland was either bought out or switched to GameStop...the website even switched

do you all still have the stores called Funcoland in your areas?

oh yeah....i think they suck too...used prices for games that are about $5 max lower than a new price....no thanks

ClarkKentKY 03-19-02 11:40 PM

There are two stores in my area called "funcoland" ... no gamestop's here. Although they do have gamestop "brand" merchandise...

I wonder where a good place for used deals is... Funcoland obviously isn't. By the time people tack on inflated shipping rated to a 1 ounce gameboy game on EBay that ruins any deals there. Same with half.com .... What about EBgames? Babbages? do they sell used games?

Mopower 03-19-02 11:44 PM

Electronics Boutique, Babbages, Funcoland...all screw job places. Why pay $59.99 there for a playstation game when you can go to Wal-Mart and pay $39.99 for it? I go there for used games too. Last time I was there I was looking at the games and some stupid kid comes up and says..."(expleted deleted) Ya! I know what I'm gettin" and he picks up Final Fantasy 10 for....$69.99! The stupid idiot could've gone a mile down the road and payed $49.99 at Wal-Mart. Sorry...just feb up with dumb people

I know I'm probably going to get hated for this, but I do pay those prices. I have friends at the location I shop at. They hook me up with a discount here and there, and I even do the same for them at my store. I hardly shop there as it is, but they like me there. Believe me they understand the prices are high, but Im mearly speaking for the location I shop at.

So technically you don't pay THOSE prices :)

But yeah, most of the employees know the prices are horible. When the girl said 34.99 for advance wars i go: "awwww, whaddya doing to me" ... and recoiled in pain. :) She just went: "yeah i know"

Giantrobo 03-20-02 12:41 AM

I hate their prices too.

HOWEVER, they DO pay better than any other place when it comes to your used stuff.

Have you ever tried the "mom and pop" stores? They don't pay top dollar for used.

I bought PSX2 from them for around $135 after selling some used systems and games that were collecting dust in my closet.

I also recently sold my DREAMCAST for $40 @ Funcoland when every other store I tried only wanted to give me no more than $15 friggin dollars for the DREAMCAST!

I will sell to FUNCOLAND/BABBAGE'S but I rarely buy from them.

I don't know about the other EB's and Babbages around the nation, but my local EB sells games for the "normal" amount: most PS2 games for $49.99, old PS games for $29.99, etc..

90% of the time you can do better through half.com or Ebay.

Thanh 03-20-02 07:06 AM

I wouldn't buy used stuff from Funcoland... but two weeks ago I traded a game in for $24 credit and picked up a new game for the difference. Not too bad in my book.

Actually, these are the same prices the FuncoLand near me uses. I picked up both FFX and GTA3 for $44.99 apiece the other day. I realize that I could order them and probably save a couple of dollars, but I was willing to spend a little more to have them to play that night. Truthfully, I haven't found any stores near me that are much, if any, better price-wise. Plus, with one of their discount cards, you can save 10% off used games. Maybe not the best deal, but at least at my local store, it's not the worst.

Xanthguy 03-20-02 08:29 AM

If I remember correctly, FuncoLand used to be a lot cheaper before GameStop bought it and before they had too many B&M stores. Back when they were just a newspaper catalogue, you could get some really good deals, especially on original NES games. Besides, let's face it everybody. Sometimes they have a game that, for the sake of playing it again, is worth just about any price (theoretically.)

sniper308 03-20-02 08:54 AM

I've picked up a deal or two there, but you really have to watch what you buy... picked up RE Code Veronica for DC recently, and an S-Video cable for the DC... but most of their stuff is very overpriced. :D

Draven 03-20-02 09:36 AM

I sold my Dreamcast and about 5 games at Funcoland for about $100 bucks. I think they only gave me $25 for the DC itself. Ended up getting my PS2 ($299.99) and GTA3 ($49.99) which I didn't think was too bad.

HOWEVER, they do overcharge on used stuff. As far as I'm concerned, used items should be 2/3 to 1/2 price from retail. When they are selling used games for $44.99, that's a joke.

What's even better is they sell used DVDs that are more expensive than buying a new one at Best Buy. That cracks me up.

Jason Reynolds 03-20-02 09:37 AM

They do have decent prices on older console games. I pick up an occasional Saturn, Genesis or NES game there for usually $2-5.

Here in Austin, Gamefellas is pretty big and has decent prices on things. A dreamcast currently costs $39 there. However, my brother-in-law just bought one from Gamestop. Why? Because he was tired of waiting for Gamefellas to get one. Gamestop had several, because they pay better for them -- but they charge more. Strangely though, Gamefellas had a better, cheaper selection of controllers and games.

And, I can't figure out why there isn't a used DVD store that sells DVDs for less than $15.

DVDKrayzie 03-20-02 11:10 AM

I love funcoland. Picked up Salo Criterion for like $9.99 and sold it for almost $500 the next day on ebay and paid my rent. so they're still #1 in my book :) some of there prices are normal and they do usually get games in 2-3 days before target/best buy. But the used PS2 games for $44.99, when they're selling the same game new for $49.99 doesn't make too much sense for me. What I don't get is how they decide to charge $54.99 on some xbox/ps2 games and there is a Target literally right next door where you can get the same game for no more than $49.99.

zero 03-20-02 11:38 AM

Furthermore....

They let you return a game you just bought within 7 days, no questions asked. Even if you didnt like it, which does happen a lot by the way (WWF RAW XBox is an example from the store I shop in almost all of the reservists returned it) and they dont seem to mind.

Lewsiv 03-20-02 12:55 PM

I don't know about funcoland, but I know the EBgames in My area price matches with all the other stores in town. They usually have the best selection, and I have found the prices on used games, equipment, and dvds to be very reasonable.

Perhaps, but the time and trouble going through HALF.com IS NOT worth it to me.

So it's better --for me-- to deal with Funcoland....

Yeah, I did notice their used dvd prices weren't to bad. Especially after figuring in S & H online.

victant 03-20-02 06:22 PM

I agree, sometimes you can find decent prices on some good used DVD titles. Rarely ever on platform titles. And it's for those times that I still waste my time and walk into every price-gauging store....

junkie 03-20-02 06:24 PM

I picked up a 3 pack 250mb Fuji zip disks for 5.00 from them, but I still think they suck a$$

I don't get it. Not mad just don't get it. Could someone explain, what does not paying an outragous price when I can get the exact same thing cheaper have to do with Bose?

I believe that juiio is referring to the kid who paid $70 for FFX. The reference to Bose is that many people believe that Bose products are dramatically overpriced for what they're worth. Bose isn't horrible, it's just that the price isn't justified by the quality. I guess it's like paying $1000 for a PS2 or Xbox, or $70 for FFX. :)

Mopower 03-21-02 12:54 AM

Ohhhhh lol I get it,

mr.snowmizer 03-21-02 01:51 PM

Those high used prices are what allow (for the most part) higher than average trade-in values. And since their new prices are no longer $5 higher than just about everyone else, it's not a bad place to sell off old games for brand-new, unopened ones.

Since I prefer avoiding Half.com or ebay, let the uninformed continue subsidizing my transactions. :)

POWERBOMB 03-23-02 11:53 PM

After hearing about those stores I finally went to one a few months back. What a joke! I was in and out as soon as I went to their "bargain" bin and saw the prices for Genesis and Super NES games. Way to over priced for my taste.

On Saturday I was at a local Sears and checked out their open item table. They had an opened Crash Bandicoot PSX game "regular" priced at $49.99 (yeah, like 2 or 3 years ago) now only $19.99. I told the salesperson that I could go to any nearby retailer and buy the same game new and sealed for that price. He just kinda blew it off.

I've overpaid for stuff before, but damn_sure not video games!

duy37 03-24-02 02:30 AM
