First Two Disk Game for Gamecube--Resident Evil

From IGN:

Resident Evil on Two Discs

Enjoy the totally revamped GameCube version of Resident Evil on -- not one -- but two optical discs.

January 29, 2002

According to Japanese news source GC-Inside, the GameCube version of Resident Evil will come on, not one, but two optical discs. This will be the first GameCube title to span across two discs, requiring more than the standard 1.5GBs of data available. IGNcube suspects that the biggest factors that pushed Resident Evil over the 1.5GB mark are the full-motion video sequences, pre-rendered backgrounds, and audio.

This is good news, as Capcom is paving the way for developers to follow. Many third-parties are getting used to the standard of the 4.7GB Xbox and PlayStation DVDs, making ports difficult on GameCube. Hopefully the difference in cost for the extra disc isn't too much that others will be discouraged from doing the same.

Capcom was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.

I'm shocked this game even needs 2 discs. Other than that I don't find this story real interesting.

I always thought that it was a mistake for them to go with the small disc format. Not that this is a big deal, but having to swap discs in general just sucks.

Xenosaga was going to be a 2-dvd game on the PS2, but now it's just one dual-layered DVD (the first on PS2 I think?). Imagine how many Gamecube discs that would be? hehe

Capcom should be used to 2 disk games, as several of the RE series were 2 disks on previous platforms. The first one wasn't but several of the others were ... they used it to play from a different character's perspective.

What sucks about it? Having to switch disks once through out an entire game isn't really an issue. inappropriate comment removed. -namja

I've heard a rumor that the two discs will be for each character, which means you put in the disc for the character you want to play. That would eliminate having to switch the discs during gameplay.

Still, even if it doesn't work that way, it's no big deal for me. I was able to somehow "cope" with switching discs while watching Godfather 2, SO I think I can handle switching the discs once during 40 hours of Resident Evil.

The smaller discs make the load times shorter and will greatly cut down on piracy. Plus whats the big deal? If you play through the whole game, you have to swap the discs once.

2 Cube discs should be able to fit nicely into a normal case. You'll the spot for the memeory card, but who uses that anyway?

Yikes, relax. I said it wasn't a big deal. It's just the last time I remember playing a multi-disc game, if I had a save that was beyond the first disc, I had to boot off the first disc and then swap after I selected the save game. This was a while ago and I'm sure Capcom has since figured out how to get around that.

I don't have anything agains the GC. Sheesh, it's like you guys won't tolerate any criticism of it at all.

I don't think was implying that you had something against the gamecube, it was just simply a lame complaint. All multi-disc console games that I've played (several on the Playstation a few on the Dreamcast), only require you to change discs when you reach the end of each disc. You put in the next disc in and just go on playing/saving as usual. I've never heard of having to put disc one back in to save, maybe that was some crappy PC game as they tend to do crazy stuff like that.

No, it's when I was resuming a saved game. I had to boot off disc A, then when I selected a save that was from later in the game, it then asked for disc B. PITA.

This was a while ago, so I'm sure they've figured out a way to avoid that. And again, it's not a big deal.

But all that having been said, can you honestly say that all else being equal, you wouldn't rather have it all on one disc?

I really don't care. Having to swap the disc once isn't a big deal. It's worth the trade off for shorter load times IMO. Plus it will make piracy more difficult which is good for Nintendo. Piracy is the number 1 reason the Dreamcast is dead.

Do you have anything to back that up?

Charles Bellfield, Sega vice president, marketing and corporate communications

Bellfield said an industry-wide decline in hardware sales hit Sega particularly hard. Sales figures from the final quarter of 2000 were down from the year before by 30 to 35 percent, he said....

“Sega failed to reach the targets we wanted and the hardware fell through,” admitted Bellfield. “Therefore our software fell through in the same time frame and it did not reach the levels that we expected it to.”

Bellfield did point out that Sega sold eight games for every system sold, as compared to the two-to-one ratio for PlayStation 2. “But an eight-to-one ratio on that poor install base did not give us the revenues nor the profits that we needed that we needed for our business models.”
The software sales were strong considering the number of consoles that were sold. And if anything, piracy resulted in higher console sales. My firm and long standing belief is that Sony killed the Dreamcast with it's unrelenting hype for the PS2.

I sure would. I don't understand why so many people look at a multi-disc game as such a good thing. I'd rather have less FMV and have the game be on a single disc.

I wasn't attacking anybody before. It's just that I own dozens of multidisk games and I couldn't even imagine what the problem was about switching disks. I had never heard about booting the game off of disk 1 first though. That must have been one crappy game.

White Knight: I wasn't saying there wasn't a single person on Earth who uses the memory card holder. I was sure somebody did -- and now I know who it is.

Its not like I sit and play the whole game through in one sitting anyway. I switch between games all the time so what's one extra time taking the disc out and putting another one in?

And no Flay its not like watching a flipper movie, but you wouldn't want to pass on a chance to bash the Game Cube.

Of all the complaints about the Game Cube this is the absolute weakest yet.

Not even close. It's a Dreamcast Code Veronica Bash. I remember having to switch those discs after finishing up on the Antarctic level.

Then I was too caught up in the game and I forgot to save when I started the 2nd disc. Anyone that has played this particular part of the game knows that's a bad idea. Anyway I died pretty quick and had to reload from the 1st disc.

It's mainly just annoyed me, kind of like a flipper disc annoys me. Just remember to save after you start the 2nd disc.

I would prefer to not have to use two discs. That being said its not a big deal.

If it was a big deal then Capcom wouldn't be releasing ALL the games just on the GC now would they? So drop it guys.

Aghama,

That's just my theory on why the dreamcast died, though the hype for PS2 was certainly another major factor. Sales were good, but piracy was extremely rampant which does hurt sales, and also makes developers think twice about putting a game out for that console. The DC was already fairly weak, having a tiny user base compared to the Playstation/PS2, add the rampant piracy and smaller developers are likely to just opt not to develop for that console. I know the Playstation had a ton of piracy too, but it's user base was much, much larger, so developers had reason to be more confident in developing for that platform.

Again, this is all opinion. I don't care enough to bother doing any research on the matter.

Changing discs really doesn't bother me. It didn't bother me for Code Veronica. I just kept my old vmu files from the first disc, I almost always save a couple of back up saves just incase I do something really stupid.
