Zelda vs. Project Ego and Metroid vs. Brute Force.

What do we know about Brute Force? Very little. Digital Anvil certainly doesn't have the pedigree that comes with Nintendo's Metroid series has. Metroid is an AAA title. Brute Force looks more like something that wouldn't compete on a console with more games on it. Honestly, I think it will just be a letdown after Halo.

As for Project Ego, Molyneux is known for two things. Great games, and delays. Of course, the same thing could be said about Miyamoto, but Zelda looks a lot further along in development than Project Ego. Also, Molyneux has had to scale back his games in the past. This happened with Black and White, which was supposed to have more features than it ended up with. Project Ego sounds great if it can be pulled off, but it may very well fall flat. It wouldn't be the first ambitious game to do so.

Microsoft's first party games don't even begin to compete with Nintendo's first party stuff. I know you're a die-hard XBoxer, but trying to convince people that Brute Force is better than Metroid is about as laughable as trying to convince people that Project Gotham Racing is better than Gran Turismo 3.

What's wrong with SMB? It's a superb game that, to me, doesn't feel "rushed" at all.

I was just using Brute Force as an example. I never said it would compete with Metroid. I do know that by the time Retro studios gets there act together with Metroid, I may be playing Halo 2.

You almost sound like you want Project Ego to fail. I'm not suprised. And I predict neither Project Ego or Zelda will make it out this year. Oh, and I hope Zelda does very well. I liked playing OoT, so I will probably like this one too.

You are repeating yourself, so I will to. I never said Brute Force would compete with Metroid. I just used it as a possible 1st party game example for comparison.

Actually, Sonic Team didn't do SMB - it was Amusement Vision.

My point exactly.
I think thats just the tip of the iceberg. Team Sonic is one of the most innovative and creative groups in the entire industry. SMB is only the opening shot. Wait til they get more familiar with the hardware and put a longer dev time into the equation.

The shaft???

Hardly.

The new Metroid is an unproven commodity. They are bringing from 2d to 3d (it looks very "unmetroid" to me). I would say its quality is as up in the air as Brute Force's is. Scandal, you act as though Metroid is the sequel to last year's best title or something? That's really far from the case. It's be tinkered with like crazy and nobody knows how it will turn out. I can't say I've seen anything looking better than Halo on the screen shots, and that's the game style it looks like it's going for. Too bad they try and copy the new FPS genre when it could have been done so well in 2d. Oh well...

Well, it doesn't make a flattering comparison, which just drives home the point that Nintendo's first and second party stuff is the best in the business.

I don't want Project Ego to fail. I expect it will be a pretty good game if and when it comes out. I don't expect it to be the end all-be all, but it will almost certainly be a good game. I am skeptical about it being all that Molyneux says it will be. Black and White certainly wasn't quite as amazing as it sounded when it was first announced. I am also suspecting it will be too little, too late for the XBox. Zelda might also be too little, too late for the gamecube, but GC seems to have more exciting games (for my taste at least) than XBox on the horizon.

This is what everyone said about Zelda:OoT. I am certian this game will be a faithful conversion of Metroid into 3D. A lot of games come with high expectations, but Nintendo, Rare, and Blizzard are the only companies that consistantly meet them. Nintendo has too much riding on Metroid to let it be anything less than fantastic. I'm expecting an average rating of above a 9 from all the game sites for this, if that means anything to you.

Will it be better than Halo? Maybe, maybe not. Halo is a great game, which had the benefit of 3 years of development time. I expect nothing will truly topple Halo until Half Life 2, although Metroid and the next Perfect Dark game will be pretty close.

Yet again, that's not what the comparison is about. My comparison is just supposed to be closer than Panzer Dragoon, a third party action game adapted from a role playing saga.

Anyway, when Brute Force comes out in Mid-March, I will be sure to let you know how it is. When Metroid gets released a year from now, you fill me in.

Brute Force isn't confirmed for March, but if it does make it out that early, I'll be too busy playing State of Emergency to notice.

It's on track for the European Launch which is mid-March.

As for State of Emergency, it's coming out Feb 19th last I checked. You enjoy that while I play WWF: Raw, Wreckless, UFC: Tapout, and Jet Set Radio Future in Feb.

State of Emergency comes out Feb 5.

As for the XBox February lineup, Jet Set Radio will be excellent. UFC Tapout will probably be something less than an "A" game, with limited appeal, and WWF:Raw will likely suffer from the mediocrity that tends to plague wrestling games across all platforms. Wreckless is an unknown factor. It's gorgeous to look at, but after Grand Theft Auto 3, it's not quite mouth watering

This topic seems to have strayed a bit, but I'd like to say that I've seen the Brute Force videos and I've seen the Metroid Prime 10 second video. I'm more impressed with Metroid. If that's what it'll end up looking like, then it'll probably be a beautiful FPS. Now I have to mention Daikatana at this point, but I doubt Metroid will suffer from any similar problems. Nintendo makes some great first party games (not my style most of them, but I can admit that some of them are truly great) and I don't see the lack of 3rd party support being a problem. Since they are the cheapest living console out there and that they make primarily children and family oriented games, parents will continue to snap them up. Nintendos demographic seems to be a younger age group and they are the best in the business at catering to this group. I think 3rd party games like Resident Evil and whatnot will certainly help to pull in the older kids if Metroid Prime isn't enough. I like the idea that they leave edgy titles to 3rd party developers because A. they don't really need edgy titles to satisfy their fanbase of parents, children and young adults who grew up on a steady diet of NES and SNES and B. they don't even really need 3rd party developers in order to get people to buy their systems since they make the games their fans love by themselves. I picked "I don't care" because I really don't, but I guess I don't think they got the shaft. They've got enough money they could buy up a developer if they wanted... so far I think it's looking like GCN will be a success (despite the rocky start) 3rd party developers or not.

If I was a 3rd party developer, I'd just make my games for all 3 systems because A. it's only fair and B. you make more money that way by selling 3 times the amount of copies you would if you were exclusive and C. I think it's just a bit shady to toss a buttload of money into a developers lap just for exclusive rights. It only hurts the gamers.

Gallant Pig 01-31-02 01:30 AM

Scandal and Flay, enough of this pissing match guys.

Nintendo has a great lineup irregardless of Sega support. PS2 has a great lineup, and XBox has a great lineup. You can't go wrong. And Scandal, I'm glad to see you toning your anti-Xbox feelings down, thanks. :) (I'm not being sarcastic, I really mean it)

Actually Ebgames and Gamestop both changed the shipping date to Feb 18th, thus making the release date Feb. 19th.

AgtFox 01-31-02 08:51 AM

Yes, please stop the pissing match. Kind of gone off-topic here, haven't we?

Technically, every system is getting the shaft this time of year. Jan through roughly May is considered the slow time in the industry. Games that come out during this time are ones that couldn't make it or weren't scheduled to make it out by Christmas (i.e. WWF Raw, UFC Tapout, Morrowind, State of Emergency, Maximo, etc.), new sports games for Winter to Summer sports and basically the games that just outright stink.

Once May rolls around and E3 is through, we then have an idea of what the gaming landscape looks like through the rest of the year and into the next couple years. Then is when you can decide if a system is getting the shaft or not.

On the GC side, StarFox Adventures and Eternal Darkness were scheduled to be out by the end of March, now they are pused back to at least April and probably into the 2nd half. Resident Evil, for those who want it, should be out sometime in the 1st half of the year since it is coming out on March 22 in Japan. I am sure Capcom is already working on the translation and will have probably a 3 month turnaround.

I'd talk about the X-Box side, but this is about GC. Maybe we need to create a new thread about future X-Box titles and what we think of them. Project Ego will be great, but probably won't be as ambitious as Molyneaux says, much like Black and White.
