is ign on crack? (my beef with a review)
i was reading the ign review for the game cube version of SSX tricky, and while i agree that the controls on the gamecube take a little getting used to, to call them clumsy and sloppy are ridiculous.
in addition, to say that the game is techncally inferior to the PS2 version is asinine. my friend and i played for three hours yesterday on my cube and experienced ZERO slowdowns, thats ZERO.... yet from the review on ign they claim it happens all the time.
Lastly, not a single mention of how there is almost no load time at all in the cube version. i wait less than four seconds and i'm flying down the mountain.
the only things i see differently from the PS2 version is the controls having a bit of a learning curve...... but only if you are completely used to the PS2 version.... if not, then the controls are fine. other differences would be DECREASED LOAD time and less slowdown.
does this make for a half-assed port? as ign would have you believe.
sorry, just had to vent as I am enjoying this game immensely and can't believe ign would slam what it slammed about it....

If you are used to playing SSX on the PS2, going to another system will be difficult.
I own the PS2 first version, and swapped the the PS2 version of Tricky for the Xbox version.
The Xbox has better graphics but the controls on the Dual Shock 2 (which it was developed on) are unsurpassed.
Both the Gamecube and XBox loses buttons so some tricks are awkward to pull off.

I rented SSX Tricky the other day for the Cube (never played it or SSX on the PS2), and I agree that IGN's review is a little harsh. The problem is that the reviewer had previously played the game on the PS2, so he was used to it there. I'm sure it is better on the PS2, but if you only play the Gamecube version the learning curve wouldn't be nearly as difficult, no?
As for the framerate issues, I believe they only happen in the later levels. I just unlocked Tokyo last night (one of the levels that reportedly has slowdowns). I didn't notice any slowdowns but I only went through it a couple times.
Anyway, I was surprised at how polished the game was after the way IGN (and others) have painted it as a "quicky port." True, it's not perfect, but it's a pretty slick game.
