A co-worker of mine went to Best buy at lunch to buy an X-box and they told him the playstation 3 will be out this November, 2002.

Everything I've heard has the PS3 at least 3 years out, anyone else seen different?

If I had a nickel for every time a Best Buy employee told me some complete BS story about new technology or release dates - I'd have a sack full of nickels large enough to swing around my head and clobber a Best Buy employee into unconciousness. They say these things with such complete conviction too - it's amazing.

The PS3 will be out sooner than Sony planned. But Nov 2002 definately aint going to happen. In it's current state, the PS2 will easily last till late 2004.

I seriously doubt the PS3 will be coming out before next year. The PS2 is doing extremely well vs. the XBox and GC, as far as I know. Sony makes money not by selling new consoles, but by selling games. If the PS3 came out this year, it would be in competition with the PS2. I think that Sony is a little smarter than that.

The only thing we know about PS3 is that Sony said "The release of the xbox will likly force the earlier introduction of the PS3."

They said that for a couple obvious reasons. 1 being to make people re-consider buying an xbox when something even "greater" was/is around the corner. You will not see the PS3 anywhere this year, I promise.

I was in Electronics Boutique today talking to a mother worrying that a PS2 will go obsolete within a year like their Dreamcast which they bought spring last year. Thte employye said that the PS3 will be coming out 2005. He said this fairly emphatically. I don't know if he knew what he was talking about or just trying to sell a PS2.

Of course Sony is most likely researching for the PS3, but it probably won't come out for another 4-5 years.

I remember the first receiver I purchased was from Best Buy. When I asked the guy for suggestions, he started this little spiel, and then said (this is where I decided to never listen to a BB person again):

"The only thing I don't understand is why they have this laser on the back (pointing to the optical out). How a light is supposed to send any sound is beyond me. I mean how are you even supposed to hook it up?!"

I am still in shock over his saying that with conviction.

If that Playstation 3 site wasn't the funniest thing I'd seen in a long while, that optical out thing was. Technically, you could use light to send sound (not exactly in a laser sort of optical way), but you'd think that Best Buy would tell their employees never to say things like "Gee, I just don't understand why...." or "this laser doo-dad thing must be nifty because the other one don't got it".

What I believe is, they are releasing a new version of the PS2 at the end of the year. Most likely, one with hard drive and ethernet built in. Or if anything, they'll just bundle it with it, but there's been lots of rumors about a new PS2. Maybe they'll give it a built in remote sensor for the dvd remote.

I must be lucky, at the best buy I go to, the employees there (well the ones you can tell are over 15) all seem to have a clue Well except 1 guy like 4 years ago that told me I shouldn't buy an iMac cuz they were gonna bomb bigtime

actually they are releasing some ps2 in different colors. similar to their sony psych (sp?) discman series.
