Heh, "Tiny".
That's one I haven't heard before. When you're talking about the Xbox, it's quite the contrary.

Mine Xbox was from Lot #0145, lasted about 50 Days before it died, Best Buy's Break room box is working great. Left it on for 72 hours straight just to stress test it.

MSNBC coverage of defective Xboxes

Article

Still a few hundred out of almost 2 million consoles is a pretty small percentage wouldn't you say? I'm inclined to give big MS the benefit of the doubt since this is their first console ever. *shrug* I don't own one though so take it all with a grain of salt. (Still too pricey for me)

John Kreis, 31, of Chicago bought an Xbox the day it came out. He said the $300 system stopped working almost immediately, but it took a month of aggravation with Xbox customer service before he got a replacement.
Where did he buy it from, Ebay? What store doesn't have a return policy that would allow him to go back into the store and exchange it??

Since people have mentioned taking units back to the store, SOME products--and I'm not talking about XBOX-- do say "CALL OUR TECH HELP LINE BEFORE TAKING UNIT BACK TO PLACE OF PURCHASE"

I know I've seen this sticker on boxes or on leaflets packed with certain products.

I talked to the local gamestop manager about these reports earlier this week. I was surprised that he said they've only received a couple defective units so far, but that they actually get an average of 4 or 5 defective PS2's every week.

no returns at babbages without extended warranty

Before Christmas they were telling customers as soon as they purchase the xbox it becomes microsoft's problem if it does not work. No returns, unless of course you purchased babbages extended warranty with the unit, for $25 a year I believe

Oh Man...I just bought an Xbox 2 days ago and the lot number is 150 ! I bought mine in California. So far no problems, but because of the cursed lot #150 I'll get the extended warranty.

Yet another reason not to buy from babbages...they charge too much anyway.

Really?
Where I live (Québec in Canada) it would be ILLEGAL for them to do this.

Sorry if this has been posted some where else but I couldn't find it. My Xbox has been freezing up during game play. I thought that it was just Max Payne so I thought just exchange for a new one, well it is doing it now on Obi-wan as well. On Payne it would take forever to load a new level and only happend on the later levels, the bar would get stuck, and in obi wan, when I change from light saber to binoculars it gets frozen for about 30 secs and then goes on.
I called tech support and they told me to wipe hard drive. I thought I would ask if anyone else has experienced this and if they did wipe hard drive if it worked. I do have memory card but not enough space to save halo-finished, madden season, pgr, obi-wan and max payne. Thanks for the help

Every now and then my XBOX was sending out muted garbled sound to my DD 5.1 receiver. It happened twice. I returned the unit to TOYS-R-Us and they gave me a brand new one. I am seriously thinking about the Microsoft extended plan. Did anybody here opt for the plan?

Just an update on my friend who reported his XBOX broken to microsoft. It took 4 days from the time he called it in, received a return shipment box, and his XBOX repaired back to his doorstep. I think that's fairly fast turn around time.

Mine is lot #0150 but no problems here at all. Maybe mine was assembled on a Wednesday.

I first played Halo and saw the game freeze up a couple of times. I was a little worried but then I realized it was loading the next corridor when I saw the word "loading". DUHH!!

I actually had total lockups that required a power cycle to reset when playing Obi-Wan. There were numerous pauses and stutters, too. Lucasarts was basically no help, and Xbox CS gave the same advice. I didn't go for the hard drive reset though.
The problems minimized themselves greatly after completing a particular level. Also, the Xbox had been on for quite a while (continuously for about three days) so my problem might have been overheating or the like.

Where in Obi-Wan did you have lockups/stutters/freezes?

I haven't checked my lot number but I still have had no problems. My son plays about 2 hours a day and sometimes as long as 5 or 6 hours on weekends. Maybe not alot to some but I am happy with the performance.

In the Obi-Wan game (its not my favorite but trying to finish it) it is locking up on me in the level where you steal the secrets of the light saber. I am now on the ship where episode one starts. I didn't notice if it is locking up there or not because once I got off that level I quit playing. Is this the same place it happend to you?

Thanks for helping!

The only "problem" I have with my Xbox is that I NEVER hear sound coming from the center channel when playing 5.1 games... just slight speaker hiss. Sometimes, I detect "phantom" center channel sounds, but the audio is actually coming from the left & right front speakers.

When playing a DVD, the center channel works just fine, so I assume this has more to do with the way 5.1 surround is encoded in Xbox games. Still, it's a little disconcerting...

In many reviews that I've read, the XBox is supposed to be less noisy than the PS2 during DVD playback, yet mine is about equal if not louder than my PS2. It's not making a loud whistle or anything, but you can hear the motor during subtle dialog scenes (just like the PS2) and it is somewhat distracting. I just wanted to check and see if anyone else has noticed this also. I have a stand alone DVD player so I don't have to rely on the XBox for films, yet if my XBox is louder than it should be this still bothers me.

Unfortunately not. My lock up problems occured much farther into the game. The worst ones occured on the level where you have to go through the streets of Theed, and jump down from the catwalk to rescue the queen (ala Episode 1) from her battle droid "escorts". Major, major lockups on that one. It seemed to smooth out once that level was done though.

Regarding the Obi Wan lock ups.....
Were you guys pressing the controller buttons while a level is trying to load or during the beginning of a level when there is a short sequence that plays?

My friend says that the lock up will occur ONLY if he does that on certain levels. If not, it plays fine.

I know. He's the anxious type. Pressing buttons before he even has control of Obi Wan.

Well, I hate to say it but I just got off the phone with the Xbox 800#. I purchased their 2 year extended warranty for 50 bucks. This weekend, for the first time, my Xbox was not reading discs during the initial time I was putting them in. It would say to clean the disc, check it, etc.

My discs are pristine & this has never happened before. It did this first on the new #3 demo disc. I thought nothing of it since these discs are made for cheap. Wiped it off & it worked fine. But then today, 3 out of the 4 games I played all had to be ejected & put back in.

I even pushed the eject button, did nothing & then pushed it again. Boom...it loads fine without me even touching the disc. Made me nervous as hell so Microsoft has now gotten another 50 bucks from me. I must say that it does give me a little more peace of mind now.

Anothing thing I have noticed that has happened to me twice lately. My #1 controller (which is the official controller) has been having trouble with the right trigger. It will jam or do nothing at all. I then have to remove the controller from the port or jiggle the connection & then that will usually get it working. Do you think there is a short. I think I will take it back to the store & return it as one of my extra controllers that I bought. The one i am having trouble with is the one that came with the Xbox.

Nope. Mine occured in the middle of levels, in the middle of gameplay, and even on the screen that shows how many lives you have left after you get killed/fail a mission.
