Playstation2-as-DVD-player problem
I considered posting this in the HT forum, but I figured no one there would know much about the PS2.
I'm cheap, so I'm still using my PS2 as a player, even though I have a "home theater" setup (Kenwood HT-in-a-box, with VR-507 DD/DTS reciver). Works great with my parents' Panasonic RV31K player, but they don't want the plethora of speakers and rather massive reciever in their living room. So, I set everything up in my bedroom and it all worked great the first time I used it with my PS2.
Then I sat down to watch Apolcaypse Now Redux last night and it won't play DD or DTS. It will play Pro Logic. I don't want Pro Logic. I tried other movies. None will play DD/DTS. I tried again with the Panasonic and they all played fine. So, my conclusion is that the PS2 is for some reason not passing the DD/DTS signal through to the reciever, though it certainly supports this.
I'm using an optical digital cable, by the way.
So, does anyone have any suggestions as to why it wouldn't be working? I'm going to pick up a nice player (probably the same Panasonic that my parents have or a comparabale Sony that I was checking out yesterday) before this summer, but I'd like to get the PS2 to work for now.

DVD Talk Gold Edition
Go into Options at the load menu for the PS2. There is an option for sound. I wish I had mine in front of me, but you have to have the sound type as Dolby Digital or something equivalent to that for the PS2 to output DD or DTS in movies. I believe that will fix your problem.

The PS2 with the new 2.1 drivers is actually a great DVD player. All the discs that used to be problem discs now work great in my PS2. Its worth using as a DVD player with the official remote and the new drivers.
As posted you have to go into the setup menu to output the DD and DTS. Its turned off as the default.
