Stupid scam I heard about
My buddy swears up and down this will work: he says he's going to buy a Gamecube, then after Xmas he's going to return it and claim it didn't come with a controller (leaving that at home) and just swap it for a new system, and getting 2 controller. I told him it won't work because they won't return it without all the stuff.
What should I tell him?

My experience is that may work at a few stores, even though they will probably take his information for a return that big and check the box later.
What an ***.

Sad to say, it'll probably work...especially after Christmas when the clerks just want to get through all the returns as soon as possible.
Ask your buddy how this is any different from shoplifting a controller.
Ask him if it's really worth his time to go through all that trouble for a paltry $35.

There is no way that they'll fall for that. They'll fall for alot of stuf, but those systems go through quality checks...
Plus he has to realize that what he's talking about is fraud, and probably theft. So if he runs into a strict store manager and your friend slips up, it might end up being a nightmare for him.
Just too stupid and underhanded to save 30$... even for me.

Oh, it will work, but really there's a few problems.
#1. Your friend is a cheap bastard.
#2. It's illegal and I hope he gets caught.
Sorry for being so ill, but this thread should be locked because it has no purpose. It's one thing to go to one place over another because it's $.02 cheaper like half this board does, but it is a completely different situation to go drop $250 then worry about $30 and screw the store.
How would your friend feel if someone came and stole his GC because theirs "wasn't working?"

Also, he could cut a hole in the empty box, stick it on his hand and start shouting about how there’s a gun in there and that he’ll indiscriminately begin firing unless they give him $35. Then he could take that to another store and buy a controller.
This plan concludes on a more above board note.
BTW, I don’t want credit for this plan.

THanks for the feedback guys, I'll relay this stuff to him (except for mmeadows -- chill out dude)
I'll delete this thread since it seems to be inciting anger.
Locked instead. -namja

I actually got a free DC controller by doing this same thing, although inadvertently.
My wife packed up our broken DC and I returned it to WalMart. They scanned the bill, said thank you very much and I left the store. Only when I got home and looked under the couch did I see the DC controller, still packaged up, peeking out at me.
A couple of days later I brought the controller in to WalMart and tried to explain to the yabbo behind the CS counter what happened. He basically acted as if it would be more hassle for them to take the controller now that the DC had been marked for returns and gone back into the system.
Apparently it was more of a hassle for them to take the controller back and try to locate the controller-less DC box then it was for me just to keep my acquisition.
So his plan might work, but I would still advise putting his money into Nintendo's coffers.
