Oh, and regarding that post above about console manufacturers losing money on the hardware and making it back on games...that's been the plan as far back as the Atari VCS/2600. Atari cost mothercorp Warner Communications a tonne of money in the early years of that system, until the home conversion of Space Invaders came out in 1980 and pretty much established the market for the polygon-crunching monstrosities of today.

The SMS was not released with Altered Beast! Altered Beast wasn't even released in arcades until 1988! The SMS version of the game came out after the Genesis version.
The SMS either came with a bult in game or a double-game cartridge with Hang-On/Safari Hunt or Hang-On/Astro Warrior.
The Neo Geo definately came with 2 controllers. There was a cheaper version that only came with 1 controller and no games.
Also, I'm confirming that the Jaguar only came with 1 controller.
I'm pretty sure the original Playstation release included a demo disc.

I remember being so excited the days when my mom would bring me to the store and I got to spend my money on a game, having no knowledge of it beyond the cover art and the screenshots on the back. I remember how excited I was to buy Castlevania and Mario 2 (a huge display at Sears). Because I had to buy my own for the most part, I never had more than 10 as a kid (buying them new and at garage sales), but around age 13 I bought about 10 more from a friend at a discount price.
Aw, memories...
Will today's kids have these kinds of memories about their Playstation 2s or Dreamcasts? It seems different to me.

Proud to say that I owned several consoles myself. I didn't get any of them at release (I remember this fact, since I used to play each one of them extensively in the store before I actually got one). I remember getting the Sears copy of the Atari 2600, then an Atari 5200, then an NES, then a Super NES, then an N64, then a Playstation. In there somewhere I had a Sega Game gear. I like others here also had to save my coins as a kid to buy my own games, etc. That's why I can really appreciate burned copies now!
I too, also remember each game that was basically the main draw for me to the console, and how cool I thought each was at the time.
I'm also proud to say that I sold each one, before it lost all its value, to buy the next.
Keeping up my trend of waiting for the price drops, I think there is a DC with my name on it under the tree. (A severe price drop this time, because I've got 2 kids to feed, and don't have the time or money to justify $300 for a console)

My friend had the NES MAX controller thing. It was pretty cool, took a little getting used to for Contra because i kept shooting all over the place but it was great once i got used to it. The auto-fire buttons were great too.
I agree with the person who mentioned the turbografix, I never owned one but I rented one a looooooong time ago with bonk's adventure and it was pretty cool!! The controllers were as thin as calculators too, and had built in rapid functions(3 settings even). There was also some CD-ROM add-on for it in which the awesome Draclula X came out for (never hit the US though). Man I'd really love to play that game seeing how Symphony of the Night on the PSX is sort of in a way a sequel to that one.

I remember paying $200 (Cdn.) for the NES with the light gun, Duck Hunt & Super Mario Bros. Probably the most expensive thing I had ever bought in my life up to that point.
I still play it (when it works) at the cottage - what a system!

Ghost House and Alex Kidd in Monsterworld were my favorites. It's still in the box at my parents house. Think I'll dig it out and play it again. Geez! It's going on 13 years since I last played it!

The Game Boy has stayed virtually the same since its release in 89' till just recently with the release of the Game Boy Advance. they did alter it to make it smaller and add miniscule processing power and color but it has basically stayed the same for 12 years! And it still costs more than a two year old Sega system (not to flame Sega) That is very impressive. It is by far the most successful video game system.
