There have been so many name changes, I can't keep track anymore. You'll find it under either Avaya, Orinoco, or WaveLAN "Wireless Ethernet Converter."

I didn't realize Avaya doesn't sell direct or through normal retail channels (my company is an authorized reseller). But anyway, it looks like it would cost you $200 for the converter, plus $99 for the wireless LAN card to go in it.

Here's one link:

And now that i think about it, I'm not sure it would work with the XBox either. Both the Gateway solutions for XBox so far require a promiscuous network, or a direct connection to a second NIC on the gateway computer. I not sure the wireless LAN would be promiscuous. It might work if you can do a direct wireless card to wireless card connection though.

No, you also need to run your computer as an ethernet bridge. Go read (and download) on www.xboxgw.com or GameSpy

That's what Gamespy says, just plug it into the CABLE/DSL router. Then start gamespy tunnel and arcade software? But how is that software going to connect to the xbox? Through the router?

Anyone know the cheapest price (brick and mortar) of a wireless PCI card? I am thinking of putting a wireless card inside my desktop computer and moving the cable-modem and wireless router over by the x-box so I can plug it in directly.

Some Cable/DSL Routers have hubs built into them. If your Router has multiple (more than one) LAN ports, then it has a hub built in. In this case, you can plug your XBox into one of those ports, but you will also need to have your PC plugged into another port and running the Tunnel software to create the Ethernet Bridge. The XBox cannot connect directly to the Net by itself without a PC running as a bridge for it.

The only PCI solution I know of is to buy a PCI "PC Card" adapter, and then put an 802.11b PC Card into that slot. So it requires you to buy 2 pieces of hardware.

A slightly cheaper way to go might be to buy a USB Wireless Antenna. I think those go for about $150. (I don't think there are any drivers yet for Windows XP for the USB though, if that's what you use.)

I think this will end up being my best option but I am concerned about the speed loss by using like a 35-40 foot cable. Should I be concerned about a performance hit by running such a long cable??

and also, do I need a to hook up my dsl router to my modem via a crossover cable or will a standard RJ45 do the trick?

No, you can use a 100 ft cable and have no problems... there is a limitation but, for CAT-5 cabling, I think it's something in the hundreds of feet. Beyond that you'd need fiber optics.

Not a crossover, but a regular network cable...

Hmmm... that's interesting...

My router (Linksys wireless router/hub) has the WAN port for the cable modem and 4 additional ports for the computer, X-Box, etc.

Yes, I have the same router and it works beautifully. I'm also using a 100 ft patch cable and there's no trouble at all.
