Return to Castle Wolfenstein
So, who bought this baby?
Just picked up the tin case. :) havn't had much time to play it since I'm at carrie's house, but Once i get home I'll be playing this like crazy. |
I want to get it but I just don't have the cash... plus there are so many more games for the cube and PS2 I want coming out soon and tahts will probably get my money
|
I'll get the PC version soon, it looks great. I remember playing to Doom and Wolfenstein 3D on the 286 of my friend :)
|
I usually wait for reviews to come out (are there any out yet?) but I caved in and bought the game on Friday at FutureShop. It was 69.99 CDN but one of the boxes was mispriced at $59.99 :)
I'm in single player mission 2 now and so far it's pretty good! The catacombs with the zombies are creepy as hell! |
Is it out? For PS2 or for PC? Unfortunately I have to get a new hard drive before I can buy it- my measly 13 GB HD is full. :(
P.S.- How do you like Florida? I just got back from where you are on Saturday...(visiting the in-laws). |

My Brother-in-Law got it Wednesday and now we all have it. :D
So far it's a great game. Single Player is a lot of fun and it is challenging, with what I've played so far. Multi-Player is fantastic. This will only get better as more maps are released. I love how you can file a 'complaint' after being waxed by a teammate. If this person accumulates enough, they get booted from the server! After I install my GeForce 3 I got at BB, this game will always be on! |

It wasn't on sale either. I bought the Tin. The first person adventure is about as good as Mortyr - I don't see why Mortyr was so ripped apart critically if this one does well. The multiplayer is buggy as all hell - this is a "GOLD" release?? For example - on one map everyone was walking through this closed gate. Also - the sound still crashes in it and the only way to fix it is to type /snd_restart. People are already cheating after only a few days of being out - One guy was using an invisible cheat. I think the multiplayer is piss-poor for a final release. I know they'll release a patch, but there's alot wrong here and they should've waited until the game was finished instead of trying to make the Holiday Shopping season. It does have some good points, but I think they are overshadowed by the fact that this is way too buggy. I've only played the single player for the first few levels and so far it's average. I imagine it'll get better. It's certainly not worth the 60 bucks. |

I'll jump on playing this tomorrow night, but as much as I have played at E3 and on the multiplayer, it seems like a game I will love. the tin is nice. comes with a little iron on patch. Not sure if the regular comes with it aswell. Great tin case though |
Ok, gone thru 3 single player missions so far and it's still pretty good. Not as good as NOFL or Half-Life but addicting nonetheless. Actually, it borrows a lot from these 2 games which is not necessarily a bad thing. From hearing conversations between guards, tram ride, stealth/sniping aspects, different locations of NOFL, to the creepy zombies, elite "ninja babes" guard of Half-Life, there's enough variety there to keep you occupied and the missions are quite long. Not a groundbreaking game but a solid 8.4/10 shooter.
Can't address the Multiplayer issues since I haven't tried it. |
I almost bought this, but then I decided to wait on it. Best Buy will sometimes have the newer games on sale a couple weeks after the release. The only price I have seen it for is 54.99, I will get it when it's like 44.99.

Originally posted by Goblincat Just buy it and when it goes on sale, take your receipt in and they will pay you the difference. That way you can play it now. :) |
It won't run on my Dell laptop which has an ATI Rage Mobility chip. The error says that it won't open the OpenGL subsystem. It's odd because the chip supports OpenGL and Quake III Arena runs on the laptop no problems.
I've posted a question on the Activision web site to see what the problem is. |
13 gigs? Is that all? I'd have that filled in no time. I've got about 60 gigs of space, all nearly full. I downloaded 1.5 gigs of mp3s on Saturday alone. Time to purchace some more hard drives. :)

SPOILER ALERT
Ok - I spoke too soon... I got to the catacombs mission and now I freakin love this game. At first I thought it was blah and boring, but I'm amazed at these crazy zombie things... scary. And the freakin fire breathing one was great... I thought I'd only run into that guy once but then oh look - here's a bunch of them. The AI is astounding... not that the AI is good, but they way it's implimented is so great. AI is very tough to program to make characters act human because it's all so robotic and emotionless... but these zombies are perfect for it - the zombie AI is fantastic... the zombie with the shield is great - you shoot at him and he'll deflect your shots back at you - genius. Plus they pop out of the walls behind you every time you're trying to kill one in front of you and you turn around to see what's hitting you and you crap your pants. Wow... I like this game much more now... :D I may change my mind again if it gets lame again... :) |
The CG intro is awesome. Very cinematic. The music, at least during the intro, install screens, and first level, is INCREDIBLE. Absolutely, positively movie-quality. I thought they hired James Horner or Jerry Goldsmith.
|
Ahhhh, Wolfie!
I've been playing it a few days and it has really grown on me. I still prefer Red Faction, the other new game on my PC, but this one is bringing back memories... |

I like the variety, no time to get bored and a different sort of challenge every time. |
Originally posted by ReDsOx5048 Thats a good idea, considering I've been wanting to play this game sooo bad. The price is the only thing that kept me away from buying it :). |

Originally posted by Trigger One of the game music tracks is from the movie Predator - I smile every time it plays. :) |
Originally posted by Goblincat Which level? |
Originally posted by Trigger I don't know - I just hear it every once in awhile. I heard it in the second mission I think. It's not the main theme from Predator, but it's part of the score. You would recognize it if you heard it and if you're as familiar with Predator as I am. What is your favorite line from Predator? My friends and I used to make fun of different lines from the movie. Our favorite was "What's got Billy so spooked?". Funny stuff. |
Originally posted by Goblincat What is your favorite line from Predator? Oh god - yeah... really funny stuff... me and my friends used to quote this all the time. "Dillon! You sonofabitch! *smack*... Whatsamatta? Da Cee Ayee Eh got choo pushing too many pencils? Huh?" Those jokes that guy told are also a favorite to quote too. The Body had some good lines too... "Hey you're bleeding..." "I ain't got time to bleed." "You got time to duck?" I love that movie - they should make a good video game out of it... not AvsP which is more in the Aliens world than Predator. I'd like to be in a game that made Cambodia look like Kansas where your enemies were just those rebel soldiers mostly and every once in awhile your little platoon of special forces guys got picked off one by one by this unseen creature and as it grows darker and darker, you become more alone until you have to figure out a way to fight the beast with your wits because your weapons are useless against him! haha... seriously though it would be cool. |
I'm a major Predator fan myself but I didn't notice any of its music in the game. There is a certain intense little passage that plays every so often that is kind of reminiscent, but not that close. The exciting tune that plays whenever the Nazis are on alert and hunting you is awesome though. :) It also sounds like James Horner's music from Aliens (used a lot in trailers these days).
BTW, the game is short. Under 7 hours the first time, and I was reloading to find secrets and take my time. Still, the candle burns brightly. |
OK, I beat the single player game. I think it was very fun. A little short, but it had a good story.
Yesterday I tried multiplayer. It is damn fun. I haven't been hooked on a multiplayer game since Unreal Tournament. So far I have seen no bugs in about 5 hours of play. No cheating, no bugs, no crashing. I can't wait until they add some more multiplayer maps. |
I played the multiplayer demo and I love it. One question, on the game version....how many multiplayer maps are available? Is it just the beach head or are there more maps on the game version?
|
I finally got a better chance of playing more of it. WOW. this game is amazing. the first few levels are pretty straight forward. after that they add a lot of elements to the levels and the A.I. is damn_tough.
|

I was trying this out today. It ran pretty well on my laptop actually, 750 mhz processor, 512 megs of ram.
I have to play more...too many games...dreamcast...gamecube...ngpc...laptop...too many... |
I have a strange question about this game. I recently bought a PC and this game along with it. I realize I've been out of the loop for a long time because the controls alone on RTCW are boggling me. The last time I played a PC game was Doom and that only used the arrow keys and space bar (with a little alt and shift in there.)
How do you personally use the control setup? Arrow Keys with mouse to point and shoot? That's the best I've found yet, but then it's hard to strafe and kick. Something else I'm missing? I've been waiting to get better at the controls before playing too much, but what I've seen it great. Thanks. stoolie |
That was the Doom standard.
Now the standard control is W for forward, S for back, A to strafe left and D to strafe right. Then the various "use" keys and jump can be mapped to whatever you want, but that's the WSAD control scheme most FPS games use. It took a little while, but I'm used to it now. The arrow keys work just the same, but you lose easy access to the rest of the keyboard if you do it that way. Originally posted by Goblincat There are 3 maps in the full version, with hopefully more on the way. Beach Invasion Depot Village Das Boot Communique Assault Castle I haven't run a server, but those are the choices I have if I did. |
Thanks draven-x.

Originally posted by draven-x Actually, I think there's seven: Beach Invasion Depot Village Das Boot Communique Assault Castle I haven't run a server, but those are the choices I have if I did. As for controls, I use the following: Arrow keys: forward, reverse, strafe left, strafe right Mouse look: on Mouse button 1: Fire Mouse button 2: zoom Scroll wheel button: jump Scroll wheel: change weapons Rt Ctrl: crouch Enter: use item/ open door |
About controls... I was resistant to change as well... even when Quake 2 came out, I still never used my mouse. I would frag with the best of them though despite the handicap. Anyway - after playing Half-Life, my life changed (so to speak)... The WSAD key config is so perfect. I use it for all games now. It doesn't take that long to get used to either. I never touch the arrow keys anymore.
I always have this config: W=forward S=Back A=strafe left D=strafe right E=Use Space=Jump LeftCtrl=Crouch (most games default C as Crouch) As for special stuff - some games allow you to lean... Q=lean left F=lean right (or Flashlight depending on the game) R=Reload Z,X,C=Depends on the game, but Z and X are good for cycling through inventory items and C is good for a terciary use function not covered by the mouse buttons or the E key. G=Kick in Wolfenstein for me. If you stick with this basic key config, it'll work for every FPS game out there and you won't have to spend time re-learning anything except when games have something like Binoculars or something (which I'll assign B or V). The mouse is important too - Left Click is always fire and Right click is weapon special or secondary function. If you have a wheel, make it cycle through weapons (most games do this anyway). If you have an Explorer USB or a mouse with more buttons you can configure the extra ones for something, but I've never gotten into that - never had a need to so far. This config seems to be the easiest to learn... most intuitive cuz I set it up like this and people who come over and play on my PCs can jump right into it even if they've never played a FPS before. Even my girlfriend was able to figure it out for the most part. ;) |
Wow. Thanks everyone for your set-ups. Looks like I should read more of the book. I didn't know you could customize the controls. I'll try some of these and see what works best.
Thanks! stoolie |
