Why is it so important to get consoles when they first come out?
Nowadays consoles obviously have very weak launch titles. I bought a Dreamcast last year when it was at its pinnacle and when PS2 was launched and had nothing. I thought it was great! Right now I'm looking to get a PS2 cause the best games are out for it. And probably in a year I'll get a GameCube when their best games are out. I just don't get this must-have-first-day-it-comes-out mentality. Maybe you all could shed some light on it.

I bought a Gamecube on Sunday becuase I couldn't wait any longer. I have been reading about it in the game mags for over a year, and I couldn't resist not getting it on day one.
I'm glad I got it, because Rogue Leader and Luigi's Mansion are both great games.

I almost bought GC the day it released (I had to work at 8:00am anyways), but then I decided I better wait and see how this xmas season goes. I guess I'm a little insecure after buying a DC, and before that I bought a Sega Saturn.

some people like to own a new system right away. For me I wait at least a year to make sure i will have enough games I like to make it worth the purchase. I just bought the PS2 because the games made it worth it to me. the newer systems have a way to go for me. if the games show up I will show up also in a year or so

I think we can blame Sony for crazy console launches for the next few years. After the whole PS2 thing, everyone is camping overnight in front of retailers everywhere. People are buying 6 Gamecubes just for selling on Ebay. When it might not all be necessary. The reason Gamecube sold so much in its first day is because so many people remembered the PS2's bumbled launch and panicked thinking, 'If I don't wait in line for Gamecube, I'll never get it before Christmas.'

I also bought a Dreamcast on its launch date and I don't regret it at all. I've had the system for over two years and have gotten my money's worth. When I got home and was able to play NFL2K and Soul Calibur on 9/9/99, I was in heaven.

I made a mistake buying the PS2 at launch, but I'm very happy with the Gamecube. Luigi, Star Wars, and Tony Hawk 3 were worth the $200 cost of the console.
The only other console I bought at launch was the N64 and Mario 64 alone was worth that purchase.

Because you need it at launch dude, you'll be the first on the block to have it and no one else will!! Just kidding
. I usually get systems at launch because they have games I want to play. The only exception was the DC which I waited but I really wanted it when it first came out (I didn't have the cash for it). I get it for the games that come out for it. The one I shouldn't have bought was the PS2, but I'm kind of glad I did now, I haven't owned any games for it until now (MGS2), but I've rented a lot of great games that have been popping up like ICO, Klonoa 2, and SSX. So to answer the question....I get'em for the game, the system is just a by product of that

I just got a DC today. 70 bucks for the system and three sports games and all their accessories and controllers are dirt cheap. I played it a bunch of times in the past 2 years at friends houses, but I just never bought it. Now its a damn good deal.
I got my PS2 in March (after waiting since December) and at first there were some games worth renting but nothing worth keeping. Now that system is going strong with good solid games and I finally started putting that sucker to use (besides using it as my DVD).
I have played GC this past week at a friends and I don't really love any of the launch titles so that system is something I would not pick up at launch. I think the only one I ever did get at launch was Genesis. I would have gotten an N64 because Mario was bad ass and those commercials made me drool!
