What is a "platform" game?

What exactly is meant by that? I've seen Donkey Kong/Mario and Crash Bandicoot referred to as platformers. What do they mean by that?

literally, a game where you jump from platform to platform.

It's used to refer to any game (usually a 2-d side scroller, but it doesn't have to be) where a character travels from point A to point B, jumping on enemies, collecting items, stuff like that.

Yeah, any game that relies on lots of jumping and is an important part of gameplay.

Ever seen the original Donkey Kong? That is the quintessential platform game. Also the first one (I believe; certainly the first one I saw). Also the first game by master game designer Shigeru Miyamoto.

Ahh, the good old days
