Being first in line for Game Cube

Well I just took a break. Came back home to do some padding anyhow. going back to wait in line with ZERO. He of course wanted to be first in line at toys r us for gamecube so he's been waiting out there since 3 :p

How many of you waited outside your respective store for the first come first serve, non bundle packs of GameCube?

How was it?

Thunderball 11-18-01 12:41 AM

I got my Cube, I was #39 in line at WaL mart, and got a black system too :)

I'm taking a small break as well. Loving the rogue game!

Outlaw 11-18-01 12:45 AM

Well, I wasn't first in line and now I wish I was :), I got to Meijer's too late and there were a ton of people there . The workers said they already reached their limit so I'll just wake up early tomorrow and proceed as planned. I missed it this time but it will not happen a second time tomorrow morning. Must go now....need all the sleep I can get ;)

darkside 11-18-01 12:53 AM

I stopped at the local Wal-Mart at 11:45 and the line already had 80 people in it. There was no way I was getting a Gamecube, so I went home. Don't think I will try again in the morning. Some people were already waiting outside of Best Buy. No way I'm getting a black one, so I will just wait.

gcribbs 11-18-01 01:02 AM

wow it sure seems like the cube is generating larger lines and more excitement than the xbox. I am waiting a bit to see if a few more games come out. Keep us all informed on the gameplay :)

Josh H 11-18-01 01:42 AM

I showed up at wal-mart at 9:30 and was about 30th or so in line, though several people in front of me were just with someone buying one, i.e. moms and friends. They had 60 GC's, 30 of each color. There were 5 black ones left after I got mine and almost all the purple ones were still left. After I paid for it, at the service desk, picked up Tony Hawk in electronics, and got some toiletries, they were selling the last couple, with 20 or so people out of look. For the X-box they had 28 and had 2 left to sell in the morning.

indiansbsa 11-18-01 03:07 AM

I picked up a Jet Black Gamecube bundle at Virgin Megastore in New Orleans at midnight without ANY LINES and will promptly sell the Madden and Luig gamesi on ebay in the morning (Im keeping Rogue Squadron and the extra controller/memory card which I would have bought anyway).

Interestingly enough this Virgin store STILL has X-Box bundles lying around

Bundles arent a bad thing if you got an ebay account and dont mind selling off the stuff you dont want....hey it beats standing in lines to me ;)

Smidget 11-18-01 06:50 AM

Got to Walmart at 8:45 and waited it out till 12, about 6th? in line, got a black one, those were going a lot faster. Also picked up memory card Rogue Leader and Luigi's Mansion. :)

El Talon Del Monstruo 11-18-01 07:09 AM

nah, Bundles are cool, when my mom was picking my X-Box bundle up at TRU, the nice electronics guy said I can return the games I don't like, for the ones I do want

Zodo 11-18-01 07:35 AM

I was number 9 at Target. Got me a free "gamecube stool" with the system.
Too bad they had no idea where the coupon booklet was, that was supposed to come with it also.

ah well
time to go play some rogue squadron

Chaos 11-18-01 07:44 AM

I was 13th in line, got a black GC.:DJust took a break--loving it.

alexkat 11-18-01 08:55 AM

Well it's 6:50 am here, I just got back from Kmart and the manager was handing out the tickets, so I got my ticket they only had 10 of them. Only 4 people were standing outside, I plan to go back about 7:45 to buy it. Hehe, Target had about 20 people standing in line, 2 kids were waiting since 6:30 last night! Anyways I bought Rogue Squadron and Super Monkey Ball last night, can't wait to play them.

Liver&Onions 11-18-01 11:03 AM

I wokeup around 6:30, went to Fred Meyer and was #17 in line for one of 35 GC's. However, I only wanted Rogue Leader, and they did not have it. So I waited at target until 8 and rushed ahead of all the old men getting their systems and headed straight for the games. Got my RL....

But I have work to do first before I play that baby.

Man, it's a cute little purple baby I got today.... I can't wait to play it.

bmarquardt 11-18-01 11:20 AM

Getting a Gamecube was easy as pie :)

Media Play (a Sam Goody store) opened up at 9am today specifically for the GC launch (their normal Sunday hours have them starting at 11am). I got there at 8:45am...and was the 3rd and *last* person in line for the GC. They didn't advertise the 9am opening in the adverts, so maybe that's why there was so few people there. The line was about 10 times that amount for the Game Boy Advance launch when I went to buy it at my local Target earlier this year.

(BTW, the Media Play and Target I'm talking about are in Columbus, OH...Hamilton Road and Brice Road, respectively)

Homer Simpson 11-18-01 12:04 PM

Was 5th in line at TRU, got there at 7am. They opened early at 8am they had at least 100 cubes and only sold about 20 by the time I left.

silentbob007 11-18-01 12:35 PM

I went in Best Buy here in Lafayette, IN, about forty minutes after opening and they had tons of Cubes. In fact, I talked to the lady handing them out, and she said they were not selling very fast. Interesting. When I went to Walmart last night, there was a large group.

Themllnium 11-18-01 12:44 PM

Just got back form my local wally world~ no line~just walked in at 1:00 today and got one. Picked up 3 games, extra controller and memory card. Sometimes ya gotta love living in the sticks :p

cartman 11-18-01 12:50 PM

I got mine last Wednesday at Disc Jockey at about 4pm. The only line I waited in was the line at checkout. There was one person in front of me, then they opened the second register. :D

Same at my Best Buy - they had 84, there were 20 people there when they opened, and they still had at least 20 left when I picked up one at almost 1:00

Just got back from my local Target. The guy in the video department said he still had 20 units. Said that he had 40 total this morning. I didn't pick one up, can't afford it at the moment. :(

It was almost noon local time here. He did say the X-Box sold quicker.

My story. Got out of work at midnight, sick and dead tired, not getting up at 6 am. Planned on scouring the stores with my buddy this afternoon.

So I initially wake up at 6 for some ungodly reason, my cat comes in, curls up with me, I go back to sleep.

I get up at the crack of 11, take a shower and eventually get out of the house at 12.

So my buddy and I go to our first stop, an Ames. We go to the electronics department. "You have any Gamecubes by any chance?"

Yes they did, in the case, a black one, first store I went to. :)

I just wanted to rub in that I didn't have to get up at the crack of dawn. :)

Congrats. I got the black CUbe too, but I Had to wait in the Wal Mart 12Midnight line. :)

But oh well.

darkside 11-18-01 03:06 PM

Walked into Target at noon just to see and they had about 10 black GCs left. Picked it up along with the Xbox stool, but there were no coupon booklets.

Hard to find games though. No Star Wars at two stores I checked. I will try to get it next week.

Thunderball 11-18-01 03:18 PM

Just one quick comment, to all the people who said that the Cube sold not as well as the XBOX, just keep in mind that Nintendo had DOUBLE the amount of units. :)

mljones99 11-18-01 03:41 PM

i got my black cube today. showed up at EB at noon when they opened and there was like 30 people already there... so i took my place and 40 minutes later... I had my cube

T-Wolves 11-18-01 04:26 PM

Drove to my Best Buy near me just before noon today. I really didn't expect them to have any systems left, but they had probably 20-30 of them still sitting there. Looked like about 10 black ones left, and about 20 purple ones. Lots of controllers and games, & a few S-video cables left, but no component video cables to be found at any store I looked at. Looks like I might have to special-order them from Nintendo.

The cool thing about Nintendo is that the S-video cable for the snes, the 64, and the Cube are all the same. I just unplugged the 64 s-video and plugged in the cube.

Too bad my tv doesn't have component input, I would love to see what that looks like.

mtucker 11-18-01 04:58 PM

Well, I just came from my hometown Wal-mart where there were three Gamecubes left as of 6:00 pm. So if anyone missed out there are three available at the Kinston, NC Wal-mart.

It was pretty hard to walk out of there without one. (The wife would've killed me.)

tygloalex 11-18-01 05:07 PM

Quite odd, they actually had about 10 gamecubes at my local wal-mart. They didn't have any xbox's though. That is out right>?

MyNameIsFree 11-18-01 06:08 PM

Well, everywhere I went this morning was sold out (Walmart/KMarts/Targets). Figured I'd just have to wait awhile before getting my GC. Wife told me I should goto Best Buy and check. I figured they wouldn't have any (it was 3:30 or so). Well we went and I asked the sales guy if they had any and he said YES. Got the black one and an extra black controller. Bought 2 games (Rogue Leader and Luigi) and saved $10. Not a huge discount, but something extra - helped pay for the memory card.

Now if I could only get a chance to play the crazy thing -- the kids are hogging it!!!!!!

nick-tdi 11-18-01 06:22 PM

I went to my local Wal-Mart last night and was 12 in line. They had fourty units coming in and if there weren't 40 people you could get as many consoles as you wanted. I picked up a purple and black one. This lady I got to know bought 4 units and her friend bought 6. All of which are going on Ebay. I was glad to get one so easliy. I drove by Best Buy on the way home at 1:00 and no line. But I'm sure they where sold out this mourning. They where getting 50. I could have picked up a X box just as easily on Thur. but opted not too. Haven't played the GC yet. But look forward to it.

munedaddy 11-18-01 07:56 PM

I went by TRU at 7:30 saw only 4 people . Went shopping got some gas. Took home the groceries. Went back about 9. There were about 10 people. They ahd 248 gamecubes. But I waited anyway . They opened at 10 . I was out of there at 10:13. They still had a huge stack of Xboxes there also. I could have slept in but I had to host a party at 11:30 am.

Zodo 11-18-01 08:33 PM

i'll be laughing when all of these people who're saying "i'll buy several gamecubes, and just put them on ebay" don't even break even on the systems they bought

gamecubes seem to be pretty plentiful, so i don't know why anyone would pay tons for one on ebay.

CaptainMarvel 11-18-01 09:02 PM

I was waiting for another store to open this morning, so I spoke with the manager of TRU. He said there were about 10 people waiting in line for the Gamecube this morning, but he wouldn't tell me how many systems they got in.

ricwhite 11-18-01 10:20 PM

I was first in line at Media Play. I arrived about 2 hours before opening. There were about 15 people in line when it opened for 32 units. The local Target also recieved about 32. Walmart about the same. Toys R Us had at least 80 or so. Most still had a few left by noon.

One rather funny note. . . The KMart locally was advertising the GameCube quite a bit. There was quite a line in the morning. When the doors opened the line was told to go to the electronics department and wait by the counter . . . which they did. After about ten minutes without any service, they asked what the hold-up was and were told that the GameCube merchandise was actually up by the service counter. They all RAN as fast as possible to the counter only to find that they had just sold the last one to somebody that just walked through the door. They only had FOUR to sell!

Thats why I bought mine at Wal-Mart. I can always take it back within 90 days for a full refund.

gamecube_gamer 11-19-01 02:47 AM

Got to Wal-Mart before midnight on Saturday night. Some people were already hanging out in the line, some with chairs and tents. Looks like a lost cause, since i got there late, so i went to another Wal-Mart. The second Wal-Mart will not give out GC untin 7am. No problem, I thought. Go back to sleep, wake up the next morning for a GC. Showed up the next morning at 7:15, lined up and got a ticket. I was 10th in line for 30 or so GCs. Picked the Jet one, paid for it, and I was on my way. No sweat. Played Rogue Squadron that i purchase earlier all day long.

edytwinky 11-19-01 05:45 AM

My Wal-Mart had 64 Gamecubes in stock (32 black, 32 purple). I got there around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday night. They gave out numbers for a line at 10:30 p.m. I ended up getting number 23. They told everybody to do what they wanted to do and get back in line around 11:45 p.m.

Well between then every controller and memory card at my Wal-Mart sold out.

At 11:45 p.m., we all got there to get in line. The manager had us all get in numerical order in two rows. The first row for 1-26, and the second row being 26-64. The manager said, "A person from each row will go pick up their Gamecube, so it'll be two at a time." So basically, one from the 1-26 line would go and one from the 26-64 line would go. So people who got there around 11:00-11:45 p.m. who got numbers in the 30's and higher would probably get a Gamecube before me. This infuriated a lot of people who drew around 20-26., as we were all at the back of my line. I don't know why they did this, and a lot of people were arguing about it.

All in all, I was like the 50th person to get a Gamecube and for some lucky reason (thank the Lord), I got the black one (the second to last black Gamecube). So screw Wal-Mart and thank you to all the females in line ahead of me who bought a purple Gamecube.

Good point, but it's also $100 cheaper :) (and many places even bundled Xbox, hiking the price up that much more).

But I think when all is said and done, BOTH system launches are going down as a big hit. From really looking at both systems, I can honestly say no matter which one you ended up choosing, you will NOT be disappointed.

All in all a great time to love video games :)

I have to agree 100%. Among the guys I know, the Gamecube buyers outnumbered the Xbox buyers 6 to 2. However, that didn't stop us from trying out each system and believe me the guys that bought the Xbox are enjoying them just as much as I am enjoying my Gamecube.

Everyone is a winner right now. Even my friend that stuck with his PS2 is loving MGS2.
